For the past few weeks, my macbook pro has been having problems with it's keyboard. For some time while I was using a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse, the keyboard on the computer itself was not working. Now I have stopped using the wireless keyboard and mouse, and sometimes my keyboard won't work at all either. Tonight it stopped working for 5 minutes, and then finally started to work again. This seems to be an intermittent problem, so when I go to the genius bar at the apple store, the problem does not occur so that they can see what is happening.
Any ideas out there on why I might be having this intermittent problem? The trackpad seemed to function, just none of the keys work for a period of time.
Thanks for any advice.
(and by the way, i posted this question initially on the wrong discussion for the macbook and didn't know how to delete it from that discussion)
PowerMac Pro 17" and Powerbook 12",
Mac OS X (10.4.8),
ipod 5th generation, mini ipod
I'm still testing a workaround that for at least one day worked for me.
Go to /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and edit com.apple.PowerManagement.plist. Find
<key>Hibernate Mode</key>
<integer>3</integer>
And change the number 3 to 0 like this:
<key>Hibernate Mode</key>
<integer>0</integer>
Note that there're 2 changes to be done, the first for AC power and the second for Battery power!.
Save and close the file. In Finder select Go -> Go to Folder and type /var/vm and remove the file "sleepimage" (The size of this file if the same of your memory amount). Restart your machine.
I have the same problem, although mine does not appear to be related to hibernate. It just happens "whenever". Keyboard randomly goes dead for about 30 seconds and then comes back. It happens quite a lot and seems to be increasing in frequency.
Three things I've noticed which may be helpful to some:
1) The keyboard seems to stay dead until you stop using the trackpad for ~10 to 30 secs. It then comes back to life. If you keep using the trackpad, keyboard seems to stay dead.
2) The problem was getting more and more frequent for me. I rebooted, and it seemed to get better (at least for now). Perhaps this is a good way to "reset" the problem.
3) I think I have made the problem go away entirely by using my Bluetooth mouse instead of the trackpad. I have yet to see the keyboard hang when using the external mouse. For now, I have set the "ignore trackpad when mouse is present" option in System Prefs. When I see the problem "start happening" I switch to the Bluetooth mouse and use that until I reboot.

The trackpad option in my system preferences is not even showing up, it says »there is no trackpad installed« instead.
o.O
still not working. both, keyboard and trackpad. i really idon’t know what to do …

what exactly is the sleepimage for?
will it be recreated the next time the machine is going into the sleepmode?
Is this definitely a software issue? Because my keyboard is working fine. I have to admit I am somewhat wary of installing Leopard at the moment. Also, does this issue only affect the Macbook Pros, or are the regular Macbooks also affected?
since so many people experiencing this issue i’m willing to believe that it is software related.
though my keyboard + trackpad isn’t working even when launched form the leopard installer dvd …

it’s driving me nuts!
I ended up in that situation too, with a non working keyboard + trackpad. That is when I brought the machine back to the shop and they diagnosed it as a hardware problem.
Thanks, Interesting little app. Wonder what it is reading. My refurbished MBP gives a date of USA 12.11.2007 to 12.18.207. Must be when the refurbished serial number was assigned.
i am hoping that those of you who are posting to this topic that was initiated by me realize that my intermittent keyboard problem was BEFORE Leopard,
And was resolved when Apple sent me a NEW macbook pro as a replacement.
Installed Leopard the day before yesterday on my until-then flawless MBP... and tonight, poof, erratic keyboard. Weirdest thing.
I don't know about the people with the hardware problem, but I suspect there will be an update for this glitch, eventually.
Oddly, as long as I keep typing and don't stop, the keyboard seems to be fine. It's taking a break to use the trackpad or mouse a bit which sends the keyboard off into lala land. Until we get a patch, I suppose I need to keep typing constantly!
