WTF is up with LP8?

Is it just me or does the new interface look like it should be renamed GarageBand Pro?
I'm not sure I'll be in the front of the line picking this up until I've seen some reviews first.
It just looks like all of the worst aspects of GarageBand rolled up with a nice little "pro" moniker.
Not for nothing, I happen to like different screen sets accessible at the touch a button... Where's eMagic when you need them?
(sorry for ********, but I hate it when an update causes you to change the way you work)

..and for the record, I liked the XSKey too.

okay, I got it out of my system, I'll quit my crying.

Same place they've been for the last couple years, working for Apple.

Screen sets are still there.

Don't judge a book by it's cover, a graphical look similar to GB (what other "worst aspects" do you have in mind?) doesn't mean it's just GB. The manuals and "what's new" docs are online if you actually want to know what's in the program.

I agree with u 100 percent AcmeAudioEng.! I'm also unhappy at the fact that I just paid 600 bucks for the Logic Express 7 upgrade to Logic Pro 7 back on August 15th. I also bought all 5 of the Jam Packs that day as well. I also paid a lot of cash to upgrade Soundtrack to Soundtrack Pro 1. Now all of this software is included for just 500 bucks! I'm happy for the price cut and all of the included software but I feel like I have been kicked in the chops!

I agree it makes me alittle worried, Lets see we did some miner updates to the look, we loaded all V I's from pro in to it, we added more effects, loaded all the jam packs for thousand of sounds and most of all, lowered the price in half. It makes me wonder what apple is up to. I feel they may have put all of this into one package and lowered the price, because they have something comming out in the near future that will make logic look like a fisher price toy. What do they know we don't. with pro tools and others streaming full speed ahead i have a hard time believing that something really cool is not comming soon and we (the users) will fall once agin to macs famous trick of getting us to buy one thing and then makeing something better 3 months later.

Hi Acme,

I, for one, am very happy that Apple did listen to most of our gripes. I like the single window interface, it will make my workflow faster and easier to manage. And being able to see the ENTIRE routing scheme for a single channel is absolutely useful. No more scrolling down a global view to find this or that effect buss return. YAY!!!

The one thing I will be looking for, is tests of the SRC , the Sample Rate Conversion. This was quite bad in Logic Pro 7, so bad in fact, that if I had to convert sample rates for a file, I would use other software just for that purpose. Nothing like stopping the workflow in order to NOT import an audio file, because you have to convert it outside of Logic. Yuck.

But, the upgrade is SOOOOO worth the price! You get to author SURROUND projects WITHOUT third-party software. YAY!!!

Cheers

i don't think the updates are minor or just eye candy. I suspect apple had to re-write logic from the ground up to alter many things and make it a cocoa based code. This bodes well for the future of logic IMHO.

I haven't used logic pro 8 yet, but the fact that Rohan is saying goof things about it so far when importing LP7 projects in is a good thing! Look at STP2 user complaints!

Also, in IMO Logic is streets ahead of Pro tools in midi....but it needed to catch up in terms of audio editing. There are suggestions that this update has gone some way to doing that.

Have you bought anything electronic or software based before? whether it be a pc, mac, mobile, etc that has not been made obsolete due to a new model sometime in the future? hey even a cd.... do you blame your favorite band because they've gone and produced a new album you have to buy and listen to only 6 months after producing their last one?

Do you think apple are the only computer or software company updating products? I don't really know where you get the "3 months later" idea from. I can't recall this happening with an apple product recently?

Surround has been available in logic since version 5, it was just more hardware dependent, now every one and their Grandma has multi channel interfaces... it's been there.
As far as my gripes with GarageBand Pro, it just forces you to work like you work in garageband, I don't want to have to mouse around to see what's happening on my channel strips and I sure as hel* don't want to have to learn new key commands.
I've been using Logic since version 4 on the PC, I loved it when I made my move to the Mac and everything seemed to just make a lot more sense. (and yes, I still use the same key commands since then)
Finally, my biggest gripe, my love for logic above every thing else was it's ability to adapt to the way I work and for it to become anything that I needed it to be.
NOW I have to adjust to an overhauled interface that reminds me of that Mackie p.o.s. audio editor.
I'm sure that the enhancements are nice, but I'd prefer to have the CHOICE of keeping my work flow unchanged.

Sorry, but the Pro app that I have grown to love and work with day in and day out has now become a perverse hybrid of a Pro App and a child's play toy.

the only thing it seems to be missing is the "wood grain".

Ummm...

Acme, take a breath. Put on a nice relaxing record and light some scented candles (or whatever you do to relax).

The basic functions of Logic are still there and practically identical. You can use screensets just like you used to. I'm 99% sure you don't have to use the "one-window" interface at all if you don't want. But after watching the macprovideo overview, I can't see why you wouldn't really.

About learning new things like key commands and the like, well, you'd have to for any thing new anyway, so what's the complaint about? If you don't want to learn anything new, stay with 7. It's still very capable.

Seriously, this update is pretty sweet. Just check out THIS thread.

Hope that helps.

Who said you had to upgrade? You do have the choice.

The Pro app you have grown to love and work with day in day out has not changed. Not at all. Not one bit (or byte). It is called 'Logic Pro 7'. There... workflow unchanged.

well, unchanged is one way to put it, the other is unsupported.
I'm sure the help will be there but now there are no more updates, bug fixes, etc.
I'm not trying to start a p*ssing match with any one, I'm just annoyed that after years of working with a well supported app, that has the ability to become what ever I need it to be, has now become a locked interface with way too many "pop-up" type windows.
I have been singing the praises of Logic since Gold 4 PC, Platinum 5 PC, Platinum 5 Mac, and all of the awkward pay-for updates of Pro 7... I just feel like the option of screen sets should have been left untouched. sure, fine, modify the arrange window to look the way it does now is fine, but, leave the option of multiple modifiable screen & windows too.

one last question though, why has WaveBurner been collecting dust and neglected?
it's a very powerful audio tool that should have seen something in the way of an overhaul... and maybe should have the same interface as Pro 8, but hey, what do I know? I'm just the guy that has been faithfully using eMagic/Apple software for 7 years.

I'll relax, and Apple will get my 2 beans for the "upgrade" and I'm sure that after a couple of months my second language (keyboard shortcuts and screen set navigation) will start to adapt.
But I'm an old dog and hate new tricks, or more so hate tricks being played on me.
Maybe I'll even like the new UI a lot, but I wish they left you with a choice of multiple windows and separate layers... it seemed more Logic-al to me. And no, I will not apologize for the pun.
