Sony Cybershot won't mount

I have a new iMac 24" and so far the only insoluble problem I have met in getting all my old stuff to work is that my Sony DSC-T1 does not mount. The computer is set to launch Image Capture when a digital camera is connected. However, when the camera is powered on, its USB display remains white instead of going red as it does when communicating with a computer, and the iMac does not 'see' it - although it is there in System Profiler/USB. There is no joy even if it is plugged directly into a USB port on the iMac itself. Any hints much appreciated.

Sory, I just don't buy that. If the whole camera/computer interface is as quixotic as you say, how come wih all my previous G4 and G5 Macs I never had a single problem getting this or any other camera to mount successfully, and now with the Intel Macs they don't speak to each other at all? That is not random, it's an unmistakable pattern.
