PowerMac G5 does not read recently burned DVDs

This problem started a few weeks ago.

My PowerMac G5 1.8GHz (2003) has a SuperDrive Pioneer DVR-106D and burns without any problem any type of DVDs (video DVD and data DVD). However, when I insert those DVDs in the computer to read them, they are ejected a few seconds later. It's odd because the DVDs I burned a few months ago are not ejected at all.

I tested my newly burned video DVDs in a standalone DVD player and they work.

I decided to burn CDs (audio CD and data CD) and see what happens... they are not ejected when I read them with my computer.

So basically, my PowerMac G5 refuses to read the DVDs it burns. Any idea? Any tips?

NOTE: My DVD drive seems to take some time before it starts to burn. It's as if it starts spinning, then stops, the starts again, the stops again, and then again it starts... and doesn't stops from now.

I have the same problem (for some months now). I have a 2x2ghz G5 and it stopped recognizing the dvd's it burned. The same disks work OK on a PC-laptop (sorry for those swearwords) and also on a powerbook G4 and powerbook G5. I have an external DVD reader that I will try those cursed disk on later this eevening.
But I think the problem must be in the DVD itself.

I have the opposite problem. My drive doesn't think it can read commercial DVDs - I get the following when I load one:

Disk Insertion
The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer. ignore eject

Eject does just that. If I ignore, I can see the disk volume with Handbrake 0.8.5b1 but no other application recognizes that there's a movie in the drive. I upgraded to Handbrake 0.9... and it can't read the disk.

I seem to be able to read/write anything but movies, except for the 0.8 version of Handbrake.

Anyone have any idea how I can get movies to show up?

TIA.

I've had this issue for a while now. The problem seems to be the PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D FW: A606 shipped in some of the G5s. I would like to rally support of this issue, find out how many of us are experiencing the same issue and ask Apple to replace these drives. If anyone who has posted to this thread, or if you are experiencing this issue please post the exact drive you are having difficulties with so we can determine if it really is the same drive that is faulty. Get the information from the System Profiler (Apple menu >About this Mac, then click the More Info button, then look under Disk Burning). Also list the firmware version.

The exact problems is that the G5 allows a CD or DVD to burn, and will even display the finished (burned and verified) disk in the finder. When ejected and reinserted in the drive attempts are made to read the disk, which appear to fail, and the disk is finally ejected by the machine. Repeated attempts result in the same failure. Cleaning the drive (or disk) has no effect. However, inserting a commercially recorded DVD or CD will mount. This problem occurs regardless of the method of burning (Finder, Disk Utility or Toast). The burned disk is successful, because it can be verified on another machine (Powerbooks, Desktops or even Windows machines). Disks burned on any other machine result in the same failure as well. So the problem is not with the burning, it's the drives inability to read.

I brought my G5 to the local Apple Store a while back and they were unable to determine the issue. I ended up buying a second external drive and using that, but I've just come upon an issue where I need to boot off a TechTool DVD that I updated and burned on that machine.Iit will not boot from the external DVD, and won't allow the DVD to boot the G5.

Don't take this wrong, but I believe you might want to fully read what I posted before replying. The "problem" has been consistent since I purchased the G5, and has been reported by other G5 owners considering the same drive. Do you think everyone that has these problems are asking too much? The issue is not that I should just deal with the problem, the issue is that if the drive is in fact problematic across all the same types of drives Apple should provide a replacement, don't you think?

As for 40 bucks fixing the "problem", do you mean in addition to the $40 in gas money to travel to the closest Apple store to have them repair a "problem" that they have not been able to repair? Or do you mean the $40 plus that I spent on a new external burner that I should not have had to purchase in the first place? I really don't know what I should have spent $40 on I, because you didn't exactly mention what solution you are suggesting in your reply. Are you also suggesting that I get rid of my G5 that is, as you mistakenly pointed out, is 3 years old?

I honestly don't think that I am asking too much, as you suggested.

Got the same problem than most of you. my burner SONY DVD RW DW U10A - firmware A43h.
Can't burn DVD- / DVD RW . Burn DVD+ but don't read it after burning. I just wonder if the problem is not from the O.S. and also if there's some people from apple to read all our message to bring up solutions.
Anyway if someone know what to do to fix those problem, please let me know. By the way don't suggest me to invest in a new burner.
Thank all

Well, I was hoping there was some consistency to the drives that were having problems. Seems that most people I found were having problems with the Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-106D but you have a different drive altogether.

Are you saying that your drive will not burn DVD-R and DVD-RW at all, but it will burn DVD+R and DVD+RW? Then it will not read back a DVD+R that it just burned? Does the same thing happen when you put in a disk that was burned on another computer?

What I would do is check which media can and cannot burn and then play back (CD, CD-RW). I would also be curious if it can read the same media burned on another computer. Also for my drive I used DVRFlashX ( http://lasvegas.rpc1.org/) to upgrade the firmware to Pioneer's latest for this drive. While this did not solve the problem, it may solve yours.
