PowerMac G5 does not read recently burned DVDs

This problem started a few weeks ago.

My PowerMac G5 1.8GHz (2003) has a SuperDrive Pioneer DVR-106D and burns without any problem any type of DVDs (video DVD and data DVD). However, when I insert those DVDs in the computer to read them, they are ejected a few seconds later. It's odd because the DVDs I burned a few months ago are not ejected at all.

I tested my newly burned video DVDs in a standalone DVD player and they work.

I decided to burn CDs (audio CD and data CD) and see what happens... they are not ejected when I read them with my computer.

So basically, my PowerMac G5 refuses to read the DVDs it burns. Any idea? Any tips?

NOTE: My DVD drive seems to take some time before it starts to burn. It's as if it starts spinning, then stops, the starts again, the stops again, and then again it starts... and doesn't stops from now.

SONY DVD RW DW-U10A
Firmware A43h
CD-Write:-R,-RW
DVD-Write:-R,-RW, R,RW

And that's where my problems started yesterday. Two back-up DVD-R of over 9 GB zipped data are not recognized by the same machine they were burnt on !!!!!!!!
Sure, there is no Finder / System Preferences /hardware /CD & DVD's scroll-down menu : When you insert a DATA DVD : open Steve Jobs hotline.
Anyway, even the external USB 2.0 LaCie lightscribe CD/DVD burner can't push it to the finder. But this morning, an intel dual-core Powerbook (Leopard) could this morning. Although, last nights Movie DVD, burned with DVD-Recorder wouldn't show up, neither on this, nor on another Powerbook (Leopard).

Of course, we can go out and buy an internal/external DVD drive for only 40 $ and MAYBE we can work around the problem, for hours.......or buy an intel mac.
There's no use of flashin or updating the DVD driver firmware, it the OS X, the third-party hard/software....
How many customers encounterned,in my opinion, by this major deficiency, and eventually legal steps should be considered.
Cheers

I am having the same problem as the rest of you. My G5 will not display DVDs it has burned, nor will it recognize ANY burned DVD, from my computer or otherwise. Commercial DVDs are fine. I believe it won't even burn DVDs anymore, as I've had trouble burning data DVDs of music for at least the past year. This issue has been a recurring point of contention specifically because I work in the field of digital video editing/production and music production. I agree that Apple should provide a solution, i.e new drives, for all who are having this issue. I also find it interesting that so many of us have been living with this problem for so many years now, myself included. My G5 never could read burned DVDs and I had an issue with DVDs not playing in a client's DVD player about 3 years ago, when I created them in iDVD. Well, at least we're dealing with it now. We have been under the spell of the G5. Be The Change. The TIme is Now.

I have that excat same drive and the exact same problem. It worked for a while, but, hasn't read data DVDs or burned DVDs for over a year now. Reads all other discs. Unfortunate, I've had the machine since 2004, so, I'll have to shell out more money.

Remember when Mac were built to last forever? I long for those days!

Oh my, this problem just sarted for me. I burn a DVD both using Backup and straight from the finder. No problem. Stick 'em back in and nothing. Pop the same DVD into my MacBook Pro and there it is. So, I guess the conclusion to all of this is to just by a new DVD drive? Good glad I didn't waste too much time. Thanks to all who posted here. You saved me much frustration... Good day all.

Same problem here. I've had DVD read problems since 10.4, but it seemed to have this behavior consistently in leopard. I've got the 106 in dual 2.0 G5. It burns CD and DVD perfectly fine and plays CD fine and will not play or read most DVD-video disks.
For the record I think it is apple responsibility to recognize such a widespread problem and determine the cause, if its truly a hardware wear/failure issue after 3years its not their fault, but it seems to be more likely an implementation error.
BTW: Did anyone else experience that system profiler did not even recognize the drives existence (at least sometimes)

i also have the same drive, pioneer 106d, that has been giving me problems in reading dvds burnt in my g5. i've tried the lens cleaner and various brands of media to no avail. i will probably buy a samsung as i am now leery of the pioneer drives. i also contacted pioneer who said i could try a firmware update but would have to use a pc, then port it over to the mac. no, thanks!
has anyone tried the samsung sh-s202n, or similar samsung drives? should i concern myself with the size of the drive or are they all a standard size and should fit with no problem?
i agree that apple should be made aware of this problem even though a $40 apparent fix is not too much of a deal.

Just started today. I had burned 3 discs DVD (data) with no problem. Attempted to load a blank DVD-R only to have it ejected by the computer. I tried blank CD-R and a different DVD-R. I also tried a DVD movie I purchased, all to no avail. Will not play music CD's. Really upset!

Hi Digital Max
Cannot solve your problem but I am experiencing exactly the same problem. My G5 has the same Pioneer SuperDrive and will not load burnt DVD's that have been burnt on it! It will load DVD's burnt using the Mac "Burn Folder" method but not via Toast. Discs I have sent to clients can read them and my MacBook Pro will load them no problems. Maybe we should start a Class Action? posted the same query on Roxio discussion boards but nothing there. Looks like a new drive here.
Good luck

Didn't read all replies, but it is a huge problem at work on Quad Xeons; they will not recognize the discs they burn without a restart. You have to take your burned discs to a co-worker to read them. Now, oddly, they'll mount right after burn but once ejected, will not mount again until you restart.

Too busy building phones, there Steve-O? Only 2700 views on this subject, can you say - PROBLEM?

Update:

Just received a new drive (Samsung SH-202N/BEBN, bought from Newegg for $26 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151155). Installed easily in my G5 2x2ghz tower, no software necessary, all I had to do was pop off the tray faceplate (supereasy). Works great, my drive burns, sees discs it burns, and WAAAAAY faster too...

fyi using with memorex 16x dvd-rs
