iPod Classic 160GB :: Battery Drained While Not Used?!?!

Okay, please someone tell me that this is a firmware bug & not a hardware issue, even though I have AppleCare & if it is a hardware issue, I can get my iPod exchanged for a new one:

I went to sleep last night & my new iPod Classic (v1.0.1) 160GB had a full battery. I didn't use it, it was turned off in it's case with the HOLD lock activated.

This morning, I synced it once or twice with my iTunes & after disconnecting the cable, noticed that the battery read approx. 75% full.
I ignored it thinking it was a glitch or a mis-read.

Now, 3 hours later, I took it out of it's case, it was turned off as I left it with the HOLD lock activated, & when I attempt to turn it on, the screen displays a big Yellow Exclamation Mark saying: *Please connect to a Power Source* as in the battery is dead.

Does anyone have any advice or insight into this? Is this a bug or defect? Is this a known issue that others are or have experienced? What did I do wrong?

Please help. I'm concerned.

Thanks 🙂

iPod Classic 160GB (Black), Windows XP Pro, Currently using 6th Generation iPod. Have used 3rd, 4th & 5th generation in past

Hey guys. I dont know how I did it, but I manage to get my iPod back to normal after experiencing the same problem as you guys. Yesterday night I charged full my iPod and leave it overnight. The next day, it works as usual, no battery drain, no red battery meter, no nothing.

I guess it really does have something to do with the battery meter approximation problem.

hy guys it's me posting again i had the same problem this morning but not in the first time when i turned it on, but at my tea break, it wouldn't swith on and was showing the same message: please connect to the power, i just got home and i connected to my pc and its working now and fully charged since yesterday.

I also contacted apple support on 0870 876 0753(UK) and i JUST HAD THE WORSE EVER CUSTUMER SERVICE EXPERIENCE OVER THE PHONE!

the women from one of these mideastern country that hardly speak english couldn't give me any advice about returning for a replacement or doing the software restore trought iTunes, she probably don't even have an ipod, she asked me if i had charged it correctly, i should have said comon wake up, do you even know what its a firmware update?

with no doubt i think its the update 1.0.2 that messed up with my ipod, now i'm gonna restore to the 1.0.0 software and do not update again.

I now how to solve the problem:
The hrad drive of the Ipod classic is working still, if you switch out the iPod while it's working. For example, if you're playing a game and you switch out the iPod in the game, you can hear the hard drive work on. The same in Coverflow. So you have to go back to main menu and white till hard drive stops working.
That's a dangerous bug. Maybe iPod can ctach fire in the night if hard drive works on. Apple, help!

bad news, i finished restoring the software correctly trought itunes but the software version have NOT changed at all, its still 1.0.2 installed, only my custom settings gone, i'm gonna have to set it up again, and i don't think that there is a way to restore to 1.0.0, what a nightmare, lets see tomorow what will happen.

brand new ipod 3 weeks and 2 updates and i can't get it to work.

I'll try that before i swith off tonight i'll not leave in the coverflow menu, it won't cath fire, but it would be so simple if there was a POWER BUTTON, c'mon apple help us out.

suggestion to apple: next ipod generation add the power button, a removable and replaceable battery and customizable add-ons options like the Firefox web browser, so we peaple can create add-ons for it, ... i may be asking too much

Hi JulianGER, i done that before i switch off last night and this morning it was working fine, i notice how much faster the hard disk is spining when it get to the coverflow menu, it run continuously non stop even after swith off if from the coverflow menu, i also wrote an email to apple in that link that you provided.
it's a shame that i cant get the updates removed when i restore the ipod software, there should be a different way, i'll try to find this weekend.

i've had my ipod for all of a week now - since sat, oct 6. i noticed the same problem. the first couple of days it ran perfectly smoothly. then all of a sudden i wake up one morning to find my ipod drained completely. i thought i may have left it on inadvertently. but then it happened again. the battery indicator was showing half full. i went for lunch, did a bit of shopping - boom - drained battery AGAIN! in two hours??!! after reading these posts, i listened for the hard disk whirr - didn't notice it at all. either i'm really deaf, or it's (hopefully) "just" an indicator problem. gonna try leaving it in to charge for an hour after it indicates fully charged and then see what happens.

I've had mine do this a couple of times this week.
If it happens a couple more times then I will return it to the shop and demand a refund as the product is not fit for purpose.
Apple better sort these issues out soon as it cannot be doing the battery any good draining in a couple of hours and reducing the cycle life of my battery every time that it does it!

Hey guys, I manage to install the old update 1.0.1 back to my ipod, i hope it works now.

first i saw this post with a link to the update 1.0.1 but i didn't trust the address because could be a virus http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1176033&tstart=0
and then i decide to find the update 1.0.1 in my computer by searching for '' *.ipsw '' next you cut and paste the 2 files with the 1.0.2 in their names from there to the desktop in case you need it later, and then disable the automatcly check for updates and try to restore the ipod software, say no the pop up about would you like to enable updates or whatever and restore it and sync the songs again.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Fabio

I'm having the same problem as all of you here and it is very disappointing! I fully charge my iPod Classic (80GB running with the 1.0.2 update) and it runs at full bar for about an hour and then drops suddenly down to less than half!

I also hear the static when I unplug my headphones and switch the hold button as someone mentioned earlier on this forum.

I've mailed apple about this and we can only hope that this is fixed by 1.0.3! For now the best we can do is listen for our Classic's hard drive to stop running before we power off.
