iPod Classic 160GB :: Battery Drained While Not Used?!?!

Has been two days since i restored to 1.0.1 i've been listening a lot and i still got about 60% battery left, i notice the coverflow its slower now but if i had left with the 1.0.2 it could have damaged the ipod's hard disk its not supposed to be running so much, and the static from the headphones to p * me off even more, to me the only choice is to keep the 1.0.1

nearly a week since i sent my email to apple and still not heard from them, i'll write another one, if you guys complaint as well we may get something done about it sooner, here is the link:

I'm having similar issues as well with my 80gb. I fully charged the iPod yesterday days ago and the battery drained slowly as expected. I did not charge last night and then today the battery drained at an exponential rate. Basically, after a full charge I only had about 6 hours or so of music listening (no video, limited song selections as I listened to full albums) before the batter was completely drained.

This is very frustrating as I am traveling cross country tomorrow and was planning on the iPod keeping me occupied on the flight. Now it may only last until I get on the plane.

I've got the same problem. (hd spinning, battery draining). But it only occurs when I select a song using the coverflow menu.
Everytime I want to open a menu or play a song I can hear the hd spinning but as soon as the iPod has gathered all the info it needs the hd will stop spinning, even when I am playing a song. Just before the hd stops spinning I can hear a clicking sound (put your ear against your iPod)

I've noticed when I select a song using the 'playlist' or 'album' menu the hd will start spinning and after a few seconds I hear a little click and then the hd stops. Or when I press&hold the play button the iPod shuts down and the hd stops spinning.

But when I select a song using the coverflow menu the hd starts spinnig and just like always I can hear the same little click but this time the hd will not stop. When I press&hold the play button the iPod will shut down but the hd keeps spinning. The only way the stop the hd is to go back to the coverflow menu or any other menu using the menu button. Then I can shut the iPod down by press&hold the play button.

I've been listeng to my music using the album menu for a couple of days now and the stamina of the battery is just like it should be.

So I think the battery draining is caused by the hd that keeps spinnig while listening to music or after shutdown.
And the not stopping of the hd spinning (with my iPod anyway) is caused by the coverflow menu or everytime I select a song using the coverflow menu.

beware coverflowbugs do excist and they feed on the energy of fully charged iPods 🙂

I have an 80GB iPod Classic and I normally charge my iPod about once every 5 days, since it has relatively light use. I have not encountered this problem, but the tech blog Engadget says it could be endless drive spinning.

OK... So after not believing this happens, I was shocked to have it happen to me.

On the dock all night, pulled it off to go to work and listen to my tunes, and when I went to turn on the iPod and play some music I got the "Please connect to a Power Source" message.

Got home, popped it on the dock, and two hours later the battery is full. I didn't check it in the interim.

This is annoying. I hope it's a software/firmware problem, as I won't tolerate a faulty battery or a hard drive that keeps spinning... I think Apple owes us some answers on this one as soon as possible.

I can't return it... Well, technically, I can, but as I've returned two iPod touches, two iPod nanos, and a previous ipod classic, I don't think the retailer will be very happy to see me coming with another return.

I'd like to know if they're going to address this issue, as it IS real.

Seems to be two options at the moment for this problem.

1.
Keep using fw 1.0.2 and dont use CoverFlow (Remove it from the menu to be sure) and your battery problems will go away.

2.
Revert back to fw 1.0.1 and the battery problems go away also, but slow response in menus.

Personally, I am just not using CoverFlow until they fix it in later releases of firmware yet to come.

While I have not experienced the battery draining issues, I can reliably reproduce the the constant HD spinning when coverflow is used to select music versus other available methods on my 80gb classic (firmware v1.02).

If I select MP3 formatted music (AAC files do not seem to cause this problem) via coverflow the hard disk does not spin down after playback starts (as it does when music -MP3 or AAC- is selected via any of the other available methods). The only way to get the hard drive to spin down is to back out to the main music menu.

Am afraid that's not true! I never use CoverFlow (it isn't in my menu), and today I've just started having this trouble. Even after I'd rebooted it and put it to sleep by hand I heard the drive continue to spin away. Back to 1.0.1.

This is just like the upgrade to the 1G iPods that added the clock and killed the battery life. I hope it doesn't take the same six months to fix.

You know, now that you mention it, the battery drain issue really has become much worse since I started re-re-ripping my CDs to MP3 instead of AAC like I did originally when I purchased my iPod.

My classic did this when I was running the 1.0.0 software (two days after it was realeased). I woke up in the middle of the night and reached for it and it was really warm (the iPod). I turned it off, half asleep, and put it on my night stand.

The next morning I went to turn it on in the car and had the 'charge battery' message. I thought maybe I had slept on the **** thing and paid no attention to it tilli started seeing these posts.

Weird thing is, I am now running 1.0.2 and only experienced this once, back in 1.0.0.

I guess we shouldn't expect to hear anything about this from Apple. They make no mention of things when you provide feedback, they refuse to say what is addressed in a firmware upgrade and all Jobs does is smile like a f *ing Disney Animatronic at his little shindigs and talks about insanely great products that work like crap for the first three months until we , the paid beta testers, report all the stuff.

You can't tell me that more than half of these problems (Cover Blow, freezes, syncing issues) did not show up in Cuperino before they were released. These things have all been bugs at the most basic level that any fool at the lab would have seen by just turning the iPod on and using it for a half hour. Unless these things are running Vista, there is no excuse for the crap Apple has been pulling as of late.

This is exactly why I stopped using Macs eight years ago. I stil have a bitter taste in my mouth.

NOTE TO APPLE/STAFF and EXECUTIVE STAFF - We, your customers, would like to enjoy products that work. We would also like some acknowlegemnet from you that you are aware of these issues and are working on them. Guess this is why you haven't ever beaten Microshaft at the game.

Its correct on my ipod and others in the forum. You may have other content on your ipod that creates the bug in a different way. ie: my music is only in AAC format. There are alot of variables, maybe specific mp3 formats have an impact.

I only have AAC formated music, and only have the problem when using CoverFlow

I have been able to run my 80GB classic with no battery drain by doing what you kind dudes have suggested - which is, do not use the cover flow! I only select my music by choosing album and I ALWAYS go run to the end of the album, thus finishing it, before I shut my classic off.

I have another BIG question for all of you . . . is anyone experiencing static when the EQ is turned on?!?!?! I have a niiiiiice new pair of 10,000 Yen (about $100) pair of Sony's MDR-EX90SL (beautiful headphones by the way) that I got here in Japan. Sounds good with no EQ but I want a little extra bass, so I turn on the ROCK EQ. But when those low base tones hit, static . . . and STATIC TO THE MAX!

I've run a little test here at home and used the same pair of headphones on 1: iTunes on my computer and 2: My home theatre Yamaha reciever. On the reciever it sounded great with the bass and volume turned up to a nice rockin' level. Then on to iTunes . . . I got the same thing as my iPod Classic!!! STATIC when the EQ was turned on. What is going on here?!?!?!

I used another pair of headphones (Victor earbuds) and got the same results.

Can anyone else confirm this for me?

Yes, perhaps, but this was happening with a freshly-rebooted iPod, so it must be something to do with the files it's reading even before it has played anything. Just felt it worth warning people that "not using" Coverflow won't always be enough.

A Fix for the time being until Apple comes out with a new firmware upgrade would be to just not use cover flow.
