iPod Classic 160GB :: Battery Drained While Not Used?!?!

Okay, please someone tell me that this is a firmware bug & not a hardware issue, even though I have AppleCare & if it is a hardware issue, I can get my iPod exchanged for a new one:

I went to sleep last night & my new iPod Classic (v1.0.1) 160GB had a full battery. I didn't use it, it was turned off in it's case with the HOLD lock activated.

This morning, I synced it once or twice with my iTunes & after disconnecting the cable, noticed that the battery read approx. 75% full.
I ignored it thinking it was a glitch or a mis-read.

Now, 3 hours later, I took it out of it's case, it was turned off as I left it with the HOLD lock activated, & when I attempt to turn it on, the screen displays a big Yellow Exclamation Mark saying: *Please connect to a Power Source* as in the battery is dead.

Does anyone have any advice or insight into this? Is this a bug or defect? Is this a known issue that others are or have experienced? What did I do wrong?

Please help. I'm concerned.

Actually, yes, the static issue caused by the EQ is common and has been discussed on some other threads on this site. I have a 5 second recording of the static produced by my iPod on my website at http://www.lunarorbit.net/Space/Space.html
and the original clip for comparison. Drove me to exchange my first iPod for a second, only to still experience the static. It wasn't until I read someone else's post about turning off the EQ that I could even stand to listen to anything on it.
Quite a shame actually.

Hey, I checked out your site and took a listen to the sound files. Yup, static.

It's so apparent with low level bass (Check Massive Attack's song "Angel" if you have it) The sound is horrendous!

Is this something that can be fixed with a firmware upgrade?

I'm curious as to which IQ setting you used, as I also have duel of the fates (I'm assuming that is the track?)on my ipod and I'd also like to see how it sounds on mine.

I have an 80GB and have experienced the EXACT SAME PROBLEMS. battery drains in about 3.5 hrs!

i bought my ipod the first week it came out. i exchanged it the following weekend because the software glitchiness was enough for me to think it was broken.

ive experienced COUNTLESS problems with this ipod. (upgrading from my trusty black and white 20 gigger.) now the battery drains in under 4 hours of playback. its insane... this ipod is so bad i cant even explain it.

*i would NEVER suggest to anyone to upgrade to the ipod classic.
this release has been the biggest let down yet.*

The mini-clip is from the Lord of the Rings, The Two Towers soundtrack, the first track, Foundations in Stone, using EAC 320 kBit/s MP3 and LAME. My iPod EQ settings for this sample was "Spoken Word" because with my ear-buds I felt the base a little too strong. At exactly 2:30 into the track the chorus starts to sing, and on my iPod, I hear static mixed in with their voices. I've tried other encodings, Apple Lossless, AAC, all exactly the same at the exact same spots. However, when the track is played on my PC or another MP3 player, it sounds fine, perfect, clear and no static.

To avert the disk spinning issue when Ipod not in use, don't switch off while listening to music. Also don't pause music before switching off.
Whenever you wanna switch off your Ipod, make sure you leave it in a non playing mode. The easiest way to do this is by playing a video then press the menu button twice. The video stops and move back to the main menu. The disk will stop spinning, then you can now switch off.

It works alltime, except if your IPOD hangs, the disk spinning won't stop until the battery drains off. This problem is peculiar to the new IPOD Classic only with the latest firmware. This disk spinning issue drains off battery.

Mine does it also. Definately, when put to sleep directly from cover flow it will show drained within 3-5hrs. This is my 1st iPod, as I have always argued that Apple did not have a superior product to others. I regret having jumped on the bandwagon and will likely return mine and purchase a "sureplay" open format player.

I am also getting the same problem. I have the 80gb version. I am just reporting to increase the count of unhappy consumers. I recommend that every one register and do the same, because i am sure that many out there is also having the same problem and is just reading the posts. Please, register (you just have to say you email) and reply this post. Lets make some pressure on Apple, and hope they can fix it with a firmware update.

I've had this problem since I got my 80GIG classic - only managed to leave it one night without waking to find it drained...

Figured out it is to do with shutting it down when play is paused. Shame there's not just an old fasioned "stop" button!

Hopefully the next firmware will be out soon...

I am one of the many who appear to be having battery problems with the iPod Classic. When I first noticed it I took the iPod into the Apple Store and they told me to turn on the hold button in addition to turning the unit off. Obviously, that is not the issue. At the moment I'm not using the Coverflow view on my iPod and battery life seems normal. I really hope that Apple can fix this soon so I can go back to using Coverflow.

I am having the same problems with the battery drainage so I also turned off the coverflow. My problem is that Itunes is not recognizing the Ipod (80gb classic). The screen says Connected eject before disconnecting but the Itunes is not showing
the Ipod. Do you know what to do for this one?

I know people dont seem to be agreeing its just coverflow but 95% of the time that it happens its when using coverflow, although admittedly it has happened when not using coverflow, I honestly think coverflow and hdd technology are not very compatible to load all the album art from the hdd means a lot of spin, one thing i did notice is that if you select your song from coverflow before it loads all the album art for all the albums(easy for me only have 4.5gb of music at the moment) it doesnt spin it shuts down ok, try same song and album with all the covers loaded hey presto no hdd shutdown, so yeah memory cache or sumthing, trouble is how many are damaging their hdd not realising its spinning mad and therefore easier to damage, anyhow im going back to exchange for a nano I dnt really need 80gb anyway.

Don't use coverflow

Go back to v1.01

Go back to main menu before switching off

Only with not use the coverflow the problem isn't solved. I have an iPod Classic 80GB from 4 days ago, and have had this issue of drained battery 2 times; one after listen music and another after watch a video. So the coverflow isn't the problem.

Really don't know why the HDD doesn't stop correctly and remain spinning. Problems with the cache? Stupid HDD?

I have had 160gb Classic for just one week. It was updated with 1.02 over the weekend and lost battery over monday night even though it hasn't been used since it was fully charged. When I tried to switch it on this morning the message: Connect Power came up.
