cannot restore ipod

I tried plugging in my ipod touch and itunes can't read it. it says to try restoring it, but when I try it gives me the message "The ipod "ipod" could not be restored. An unknown error occured. (-18)"
Also, in the system info on the ipod it now says that it only has 300 mbs capacity. Has anybody had a similar problem? any ideas on what to do? any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi guys.. finally got a solution so I figured I had to share..

If nothing else works.. Try restarting the Apple Mobile Device service.

In Vista, click start and type services (in the Run search box) and double click that. Right click on the service and go "restart" and then basically re-open iTunes after the "plug iTouch into iTunes" error/info screen and click restore 😉 Should be good now.

I tried your solution and cannot get past the screen with icons of a usb cable and itunes icon.It is the same screen you get when you first bought the ipod touch and turned it on.itunes recognizes an ipod in recovery mode but will not restore.I was trying to get the January service pack and itunes alerted me to update before I could download the upgrade.Now i have the opening screen and it will not restore with a hist of error codes and numbers from 6 to 1604.Please help, anyone!

i dont know what to do so how do u restart the apple mobile device...?

my touch has been working fine for 3 months
i finally decided to click that new download update popup adn install the lates version of itunes. i do but my itouch now only has the old screen of the the itunes logo and the connector cable telling me to connect...when i do, i restore and the same error comes that everyone else has.
ive tried all these steps and nothin is working

I got errors 1603 and 1604 several times on trying to restore my iPod Touch. I finally found that shutting down Comodo BOClean (anti-Malware program) enabled the restore to work.

Might save someone somewhere some time! I sure wasted enough of my own time on this...

ok so i clicked restore ipod on my itunes and now all my ipod can do is show that usb plug and the itunes symbol like when you first get it. i tried that others guys steps but i cant do anything. everytime i try to restore it says un-known error occured (6) what does this mean? can anyone help to get my ipod back working???
