Camera will not save pictures to phone after snapping photo

It looks like my camera is taking a picture... but then when you go the camera roll it's empty.

I had cleared a previous camera roll of a bout 125 pictures... then the problem started.

However, I reset the phone, have done two restores, checked for some funky sync configuration. Turned on sync, tried it, then vice versa. It will upload from my computer via sync... it's only saving pictures that the camera takes immediately.

I've taken roughly over 2,000 photos with this phone already.

Ok, since a lot of you don't seem to be getting this fixed with 2.0 here's what I did (after updating of course): imported all photos into iPhoto, then selected the until now forbidden "Delete Originals", went to the Camera Roll, it was empty, snapped away and instead of the usual blank pictures I was back to normal as before the update to 1.1.4. I repeated the import and deletion into iPhoto, took some more pics and same result, still back to normal. I also tried deleting all photos directly on the iPhone, and still working. Another thing, I've never jailbroken my iPhone.

At least try doing this, if that doesn't help, I would do an additional restore just to be safe, then maybe, just maybe, your iPhone is defective. I would at least bring the issue up at the Apple Store, I'm sure they've dealt with it ten thousand times by now, so they may have additional info, perhaps even some iPhones with serial number xxx chip are working again and others are not, I know that jailbreaking worked on some iPhones for a few days and not on others, so there are differences in hardware.

I have the 1st gen iphone, with 2.0 software. The darn camera won't even work now- starts to load, I see the closed shutter, then the program crashes and I go back to home screen! Luckily my calendar is synced with outlook, and my contacts are synced with my gmail account, so I'm going to try a fresh reinstall and not restore from backup at all in case there's corrupted files in there. here I go again- this will be the 4th restore/backup today, and it's only July 13. Great job Apple!

OK everyone. I've been having this problem for about 2 months. The same thing as everyone. After a big sync the problem started. The phone won't save the pictures. you just get a white outline where the picture would be and it will disappear entirely when you try to view it.

This is NOT a problem with your actual phone hardware. Exchanging phones at the apple store won't do anything.

There are workarounds discussed here that will work temporarily but not permanently. I tried backing up and restoring multiple times. for instance the backup and restore but stop in the middle of the restore and take a picture method will work for a bit but not for long. You may have the same problem again soon.

I've found that the fastest and easiest way to fix this is to go in and delete the hidden .Misc folder from the phone. You don't need to restore or any of that jazz.

1. Backup/Sync your phone just-in-case i guess.

2. Download the trial of PhoneView: http://www.ecamm.com/mac/phoneview/ (there's other methods and programs you can use to go in and view & delete that folder but i didn't explore them.)

3. Launch PhoneView and in its preferences enable (Advanced Disc Mode)

4. In PhoneView Browse to the /Disc/DCIM/ folder and delete the entire .MISC folder.

That's it.

I've got a iPhone 3G that died whenever opening either Camera App or Photos App.

I installed Phoneview and followed the guide in the posting:

4. In PhoneView Browse to the /Disc/DCIM/ folder and delete the entire .MISC folder.

... this actually didn't work for me. I also had to delete the APPLE100 or 100APPLE folder (cant remember the name .. and it's deleted).

THANKS!!!

INFURIATING!

I've been experiencing iPhone camera problems for over a year now and this still hasn't been fixed by Apple.. we have to do our own horrible workarounds like I posted above.

I'm using 2.0 now, it doesn't fix anything. Posts in this thread relating to jailbreaking are a red herring - I've never done anything to my phone and it's showing the problem.

Worse though, absolutely worse, is the siren's call from the other side.. Apparently, according to this page:

http://nuglet.net/?p=5

..if you DID have a jailbroken phone, you could do:

chown mobile:wheel /private/var/mobile/Media/DCIM/100APPLE

If that's true, and this is simply a permission issue on some directory in my phone, then I'm even more upset with Apple for not fixing this.. If it isn't, and that either doesn't fix it or only fixes a few cases, then I apologize for mentioning it here.. I'm not about to jailbreak my phone after all this, so I'm not going to test it.

..but, please, someone at Apple look at whether having the wrong ownership of that directory would cause this! If so, PLEASE ROLL A FIX FOR THAT INTO THE NEXT RELEASE!! C'mon, it's 2.0 already!! The phone feels like the ******* child that's not getting any love. For the past few days I've been unable to take pictures because, again, my phone is back in this broken state.. This is pathetic.

I know exactly what you are saying, and I've been saying it in this forum for well over a year now. We all need to start sending feedback to Apple about this.

I am a Cisco Networking professional, an MCSE and I hold a Technology Bachelor's Degree working toward an MBA. I say this to emphasis that I choose not to JAILBREAK my phone out of understanding of the legal issues NOT due to technical fears or incompetence.

Apple needs to fix this issue, especially since it seems to be a very simple one. However, my previous calls for feedback that I've posted here resulted in enormous flame from my fellow Apple Fans, Apple deleting the thread and threatening to cancel my account.

So, Apple is aware of the issue as well. Please don't flame me and don't tell me to break my license agreement on my iPhone, please don't encourage others to violate their agreements even if it is easy to do.

Instead, send Apple feedback concerning the bug.
