Problems with IMAP

Hello.
After Leopard clean install, Mail.app does not download any message from my IMAP server.
It downloads only folders, shows nothing inside.
Worked very well in tiger, works well in any other mail client under windows or OSX.

Mail server is on windows server2003, i dunno what program is used for mail server.

Connection doctor shows no problems.
Getting account info, it lists all my folders and shows they correct size, clicking on folder and "show messages" opens new window with no messages.

Having about 1,2GB and 50 folders, 5k+ emails.

24" iMac, Mac OS X (10.5)

Hey ya,

Had same issue, couldn't get my work IMAP mail which is also using Mdaemon with mail after the upgrade.

I too had resorted to Thunderbird meanwhile.

I did as above, with mail.app closed changed the user/peter/library/mail folder to mailx and when I opened mail again it began to download my thousands of stored messages.

My pop mail was not there only anything that was still on the server.

My smart folders were gone along with signatures.

With mail.app closed I copied the obvious files into the new /mail folder and this restored the signatures and smart mail boxes. Might do something similar for the pop mail later.

Cheers,
Peter

I had a similar problem with our setup: qmail + courierIMAP + Squirrelmail. This would sometimes happen in Mail 2.0 back in Tiger. I would start up mail and it would check for new messages - nothing. About 20 minutes later, out of the blue, it'd start downloading the 20+ messages that were waiting. Same thing with Mail 3.0, but this time it really hangs on mail synch and I needed to force quit to get out. Once I force quit and restarted, boom - there are all the messages that were waiting.

It's not quite solved, though. If you just let it sit there, it gets hung again (although maybe turning off IDLE will help). So for all those who say "it's fixed", just wait until tomorrow and see if your clients/employees/system still works as it should. I'm betting you'll still need to force quit and relaunch for it to find new messages.

I resolved the problem. Turns out that while Leopard disabled the PGP plugin for Mail, the PGP Engine was still running in the background. Since PGP is not compatible with Leopard yet, it wasn't working and was screwing up the Mail connections. Once I turned off the PGP Engine and removed it from the login items (in Accounts), the problem went away, and Leopard Mail is working great.

I'm having the exact same experience as you Wilhelm. IMAP won't work in Leopard for my private account. It works perfectly when setting up from scratch on the Powerbook with Tiger right next to me with the same settings, as well as for my work IMAP account in Leopard. Something is seriously messed up. I've tried all the tips available in the support forums. How can this be?

I did the rename/rebuild thing, and it did work for a while. But, new mail has indeed broke again within my Leopard installation and Mail 3.0.

I am connecting to my IMAP mDaemon server with both Tiger, and Leopard. When i first did the rename and rebuild, i rebooted several times back and forth from Tiger to Leopard, opening mail in each to verify that it was working.

I then went on for a day, and stayed within Tiger, and decided to pop back into Leopard to see how things were, and i am faced with missing mail. Basically, it looks as though Mail 3.0 is not updating message indexes, so the last thing I see in Inbox or any other IMAP folder is whatever was in there the last time mail was running in Leopard. Bounce back to Tiger, and all is well.

I think this all has something to do with IMAP servers that don't have IDLE support (like IMail). Here's my short-term (or maybe long-term) solution: Use GMail's IMAP feature to manage your mail, while still sending through your existing SMTP mail server.

1. Get your mail account working well enough in Mail.app so that you can at least see your messages.

2. In Mail.app, add a GMail account as a second IMAP account.

3. In Mail.app, copy all relevant mail and folders into your GMail account by drag and drop. Be patient, and only copy what you really need to keep. This is a good opportunity to "clean house".

4. I used my mail account's web interface to edit my preferences and forward all incoming mail to my GMail account.

5. In Mail.app, set your outgoing mail server to your primary email SMTP server, NOT GMail's. So, effectively, you'll send mail from your original mail account.

6. When it's working, remove the old email account from Mail.app.

It works incredibly well, and for me, provides another layer of spam filtering. I know this isn't really a "fix", and may be obvious to many people. I just thought it needed to be posted for those who aren't as technically inclined.
