New Front Row and Airtunes

Is there a way to listen to the audio with the new front row in leopard over airtunes like you could in tiger. I was very disappointed to find out after installing the new operating system that using front row only uses the speakers on my macbook instead of streaming it to my airport express.

macbook, Mac OS X (10.5)

This is the worst feature loss ever. Completely unmentioned by anyone prior to Leopard being released. So far all the "new" Front Row has done is remove the only reason I had for using Front Row. A shame, because I do understand that Front Row is now a much more versatile program. But I'm guessing that until 10.5.2 at least it won't be the program that I had/used/enjoyed. And that is a pretty big waste of $129.

I considered doing this (installling the old Front Row), but I saw all the other components that were necessary to make it work; it's not as simple as moving the program to the app folder.... What if a future leopard update relies on some of those frameworks? I guess I could go hunting, but I suspect that there'd be problems.... It doesn't update the files it needs to because the front row 1.3 files aren't correct, causes other issues....

I'd prefer Apple just do what they should have done in the first place, and enable airtunes in the newer version of front row. I think this thread needs to be kept alive and near the top... Sort of a petition, you know?

BECAUSE FEATURE LOSS *****.

We're supposed to gain new functionality, not LOSE old functionality.... What are we, MS now?

It is possible to listen to music through airtunes while front row is running, the only draw back is you cannot select the music for airtunes through front row. If you wish to have itunes playing to airtunes connected speakers while using front row you can go to your "system preferences>accounts" then enable quest sharing, then in login options enable fast user switching (FUS). Now in "itunes>preferences>sharing" tick the check box Share my library on my local network.

Now log onto the guest account using fast user switching, in itunes select your shared library play your chosen music and then select your airtunes speakers. If you now FUS back to your account the music should continue to play through the airtunes speakers and even while front row is running.

This isn't as simple selecting your music in front row and it playing through your airport express like the old front row and it requires that you switch accounts to change the music but I thought I might share it if anybody found it of use. I do hope this is something apple takes into account and fixes

If you guys like Leopard, but hate the new Front Row...then just downgrade Front Row.
- Move 'front row.app' away from the /System/Library/CoreServices/ (to a safe folder if you want to go back)
- Download:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/frontrow131.html

- Mount image
- Choose 'show package content'
- Copy the Front Row.app file
- Paste it in /System/Library/CoreServices/

Boom...front row 1.3 on Leopard. You don't even need to reboot.

Argh. Thanks for the information, everyone. I'm a new convert to the Mac (just got my Mac Mini a few days ago) but have been using AirTunes for years from my PC w/ iTunes. When I discovered Front Row, I thought it was a nice interface (plus the Mini came with a remote) and was confused as to how to get it working with AirTunes. Now I find out that Tiger had this functionality and it doesn't exist with Leopard?! I hope they figure this one out like they did with "forgetting" the "Add Event" feature in the iPod Touch Calendar.

Funny, i'm exactly in the same situation... meaning that i recently switched from a ultra-small (but still very uggly) WinPC (hidden in my living room) for a beautifully designed mac mini... and i'm horrified to discover that Front Row in Leopard was not able to "airtune" my music to my hi-fi amp...

Hey, Apple tech-guys ! Wake up ! It's Xmass soon 😉 Be nice, send us Santa-Claus with a patch... (and not a nicotine one)

My guess would be that Apple will come out with an update to Front Row.
The sooner the better as many of us purchased Mac Mini's etc., to add to our home entertainment center.

I don't think Front Row update will be included with any OS update like 10.5.2...

I believe this will be an update just for Front Row like 2.2

Just like iTunes or iPhoto updates... These types of updates are single application updates which should show up in Software Update one of these days....

I miss the Artwork and Airtunes when sharing from my other computers to my home entertainment center and MacMini.......
