USB-MIDI driver for Casio Keyboards

Ok, I know that this question has been asked before on numerous occasions, but still there is not a single solution in sight.

About Christmas time last year I purchased a Casio Privia digital piano. I wanted to use this as a midi controller on my MBP. It wasnt until a few months later when i returned from college and finally had a chance to sit down with this instrument that i realized that the USB-midi connection was not compatible with mac. This wouldnt be such a problem if the darn keyboard had actual midi connections, but it doesnt, only the usb-midi.

Ok, so after looking for almost a year for some type of solution to this problem (other than dual booting windows, and switching back between the two), seeing as that i can no longer return the keyboard, I am left to propose some of my own ideas which i would like some input on:

1. Use a usb-midi driver from another company such as Yamaha, Korg etc. I have tried one yamaha driver that did not work and i would like to know if anyone has had any better luck.

2. Use some sort of translation program to take any input coming from the keyboard and map it to a certain midi value. This worked for my 5 button logitech mouse that had no driver support for mac. I used a program called USB overdrive to convert the signals from the mouse to manually mapped hot keys. This is essentially the same idea, or so i believe.

3. Build a driver. Does anyone even know if this is feasible, or how much work it would take? maybe Casio never released any drivers for mac because this is just a case where the 2 devices are absolutely incompatible, or maybe (hopefully) because they are just lazy; which brings me to my final most desperate plan of action.

4. Petition Casio to build us the drivers we deserve. If you are reading this post, chances are also dealing with this same, frustrating problem. Let your voice be heard in the replies, and maybe if enough people speak out we can link this thread to Casio and perhaps something will happen. Im tired of being treated like a second rate computer user because i went with a mac. Equal Rights, Dammit!

Thanks to those who reply/

You are correct - the file was uploaded on January 2nd and linked here a few posts up, but I waited until I received a report that it worked on a PPC (an iMac G5 on the wiki) before updating the main page, which I did yesterday.

Anyway, thanks for the testing it on the G4 eMac - I just realized that I actually didn't compile it for G4s (PPC7400) but only for G5s (PPC950)

I updated the project's site, but here's the direct link to the latest driver (r9) :

Please update us with your results on the G4.

howdy, so i'm trying to get my casio privia keyboard to work on my mac book pro OS 10.4.10 in garage band via a midi to usb cable. i've downloaded your driver, unzipped it, dragged it to my library:audio:midi drivers folder. i've then opened garage band which recognizes the midi connection. however in preferences, i do not have the option of changing the audio input to the midi driver. i also have a yamaha keyboard and have tried the same with a yamaha driver and had no luck. and i've tried downloading the drivers onto my roommate's iBook OS 10.4.11 and again in garage band i was unable to get the keyboard to work. i've looked through the garage band help guide and found only a brief note on midi connections which did not help.

am i missing a step? i think my problem may be in using garage band. other people in this forum have had success with the same set up i have, so what might you suggest? thanks.

I'm glad to learn that the driver works.

Unfortunately, MIDI cannot transport an audio signal - this is why you cannot select your keyboard as an audio input. It only communicates messsages that tell which note(s) you're playing. With this, you can then control a virtual instrument in Garage Band.

To record the actual audio from your keyboard, you will have to plug it in your microphone input of your Mac. I assume your keyboard has an audio output, probably labeled "Line-Out" or even "Headphones", which would also work.
