Topic : Mail 3.0 (Mac OS X 10.5): No sound when new email

Hello,
since upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5, no sound is triggered when new mail is coming, even if new mail sound is set...
Any idea?

Thanks in advance,
Cheers,
Eric

I am the only user as Admin and only have one mail account.

1. I uncheck "Play sounds for other mail actions"
2. I send mail to myself.
3. No sounds at all.
4. I check "Play sounds for other mail actions"
5. I send mail to myself.
6. Sent sound ok, no new mail sound.

I do 1. to 6. again, but this time quit mail each time after sending, then wait several minutes before opening Mail.

Same results - No New Mail Sound

When can we expect a fix ?

I didn't really think about this problem until I saw this thread.

I have a Mac Pro with external speakers hooked up to the digital audio port. I'm using Gmail IMAP in Mail. When I launch Mail and click "Get Mail," I actually get the sound you'd get when Mail finds no new mail (sort of like a muted "boop" sound). However, the progress indicator continues going on the Gmail account, and then shows me the new mail.

I initially thought it was a Gmail IMAP issue, but now I'm thinking it's Mail.

I created the folowing rules
if any - to - contains - my email address
perform the following actions: - play sound - submarine

and
"Every message"
"Play Sound"
"New Mail Sound"

On both rules I get mixed results, sometimes it plays submarine sound when I send mail, and when there's no mail, and yes, it does play sound for new mail.
Mail is crazy, other times it makes the correct sounds for send and no mail, but nothing when the mail arrived.

Its nothing to do with the speakers. Nothing at-all.

I have the EXACT same problem; and whats more the mail sound WILL work
on my .Mac mail box, but NOT my gmail.

Its blatantly a bug in Mail, as ALL other sounds play as they should; but as
soon as you chose a custom sound - ive had one i used through out tiger
from 10.4 through until 10.4.9 which was my last update. Didnt like 10.4.10

I ran a clean instal of 10.5 - set up my POP (gmail) & IMAP (.Mac) accounts
and set the mail sound to my custom file (the EXACT one used without problem in 10.4)

Sent myself a test mail (from .mac to gmail) - NOTHING.
YET when i sent myself another mail from gmail to .mac, it played the file.

I then tried turning on "play all other mail sounds" which does then play the default
mail sound (despite choosing a custom file) - however again this is JUST on my gmail (POP)
account, the custom file still plays fine until my .Mac account.

Has nothing to do with my internal speakers as they are as they have always been - fine.

The Issue layeth within mail 3.0:
Honestly i wouldn't care so much if it worked on my gmail account and not my .mac account,
but being as i never use .mac for mail, maybe once in a blue moon the fact the custom sound works on that and not my primary mail box for gmail bugs the **** out of me and i have tried copying my custom file and renaming it to the "New Mail.AIFF" and replacing via the resources in mail.
- NO joy.

I just hope apple fix the bug soon

Everyone that is having this problem, open mail, go to Mail>provide Mail feedback.

Fill out the forum and select bug report explain the problem and type the link to this forum. Maybe we can get a fix for this stupid problem quickly. (is it just me or does it seem like the group of people that made mail slapped this together pretty fast) Anyone notice that in the Todos all your old COMPLETED as well as uncompleted todos that are hidden in ical appear in Mail.app. Such a stupid feature

Same problem also for me.
Mail 3.0, Leopard upgraded from Tiger, Macbook 2.0 GHz Core2Duo, 2 GB of RAM.
The problem is that I always hear the sound of "no mail arrived", even if Mail has just downloaded a new email from my Gmail account.
The icon in the dock displays the new email(s), but the sound is always the same, the one for "no email", even it should be the other one, because I have just received a new email!
All my settings in "preferences" are OK.
Hope a bugfix will arrive soon!
