I just leave it set to new mail sound, thats what I mean that has not been working. The new mail sound is the sound. In the preferences in Mail, in general. I fooled around with that again to get it to work
I changed that sound to a few others, than changed it back. Hows that. Weird that the new mail sound is the sound. It makes me nuts if there is no sound. There also was no sound when the mail is being sent, that makes me even more nuts, I like listening to the sound of my mail leaving the hanger, then when it is coming in, and furthermore should just work. I have not even installed Leopard yet. I just wait, Ileen
Same problem here, with new mail sound. This is happening on both PowerMac G5 Dual 2.3GHz and MacBook Pro 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 17". Leopard has been installed on formatted hard drives.
Let's try to find some commonalities... I have two accounts on my Leopard install. My account is working fine with alert sounds on new mail. My wife's account is not. (Both are admin accounts)
Her account is a gmail account. I did an Archive and Install. So Mail migrated her previous settings. I have tried starting fresh by deleting/moving the ~/Library/Mail folder and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist file. Also, the initial setup found my expired .mac account and set it up, but I removed it.
Just thought I'd add that I have one Gmail address that is setup to use POP and one that is set up to use IMAP and the incoming mail sound doesn't work for either of them.
I have made a new, close observation of Mail and the sounds with new messages. On my Mac Pro, with sound through external speakers, if Mail is not running, and I launch Mail, then if there is a new message in one or more of my ten accounts that are automatically being checked for new mail, then the
only sound is the sound you would normally get when you manually check for new mail, and there is none and not the chosen New Message Alert sound. However, if Mail remains open, and later automatically checks for new messages, then the only sound is the correct New Message Alert sound.
So in my case, it would appear the sound for no new mail in any account dominates the New Message Alert sound at first launch. However, if I send a new message to one account from another computer, and then manually check that one account for new mail, then the correct New Message Alert sounds plays.
Other such observations may help to analyze this issue.
I was experiencing the "no alert w/ new mail" issue also. My preferences in Tiger were set with the "play action sounds for other mail actions" uncheck so that only new mail would trigger any audible alert. After I upgraded to Tiger (using Archive and Install) I no longer got an audible alert for new mail.
I went into mail prefs and "checked" the "play action sounds for other mail actions" button to see if those functions worked. They did. I then sent myself and email to see if I then would get an audible alert for new mail. I did get a alert. Then I "unchecked" the "play action sounds for other mail actions" box and sent myself another email. I got the new mail alert sound.
Hi there Harry, See my sound were always sporadic, as I noted above. I just kept clicking away and clicking back for it to work. I can not even count the amount of times I have sent myself e-mails, LOL
