1) Open Script Editor (/Applications/AppleScript/Script Editor.app)
2) Type "beep" in the new window. Save to whatever location.
3) In Mail, set up a new rule in the preferences. Set the condition to "every message". Set the action to "run applescript". Choose the script you just saved. That's it.

I think we all read that post. I'm providing a simple alternative to those of us who are not too keen on installing and configuring new software just to get an audible mail alert.

Well until Apple fixes this bug, I will try this script.
Does this beep script just play a beep sound or whatever sound you have set ?

It is sad we have to do these hacks to fix Mail's bug, I just wish Apple would fix it.

You might be right about Space, It does act strangely and seems to remember things even if it is deactivated. But I had the sound problem b4 that.

One month later and still no fix ...

I'm subscribed to this topic via email, so every time a new post is put up, I get an email notifying me.

So I keep getting emails that don't have sound. To let me know that email still doesn't have sound. Sigh. If only I got the messages....

Try resetting PRAM.

This has nothing to do with PRAM... I have 6 macs, PPC to Intel, towers and laptops, and it's happening to all of them.

I know that PRAM is the usual "if nothing else works, try this" action, but this is definitely a flakey software issue.

Actually, it does in some circumstances. It corrected this issue on my MBP running Leopard. My G5, QuickSilver 2002, and Intel mini don't suffer from this issue - all running Leopard as well.

That's why it's my current theory that running spaces, or perhaps more specifically assigning mail to a specific space at any point in time is what might trigger the bug (I'm not sure I had the problem before I did that, since I did it basically right away).

I have NEVER used "Spaces" and I have this bug also, just like the others.

My outgoing mail sound works intermittently. I have no sound on incoming mail.

This worked perfectly in Tiger. All other sounds work fine. It's only the new mail alert that is not working. No matter which sound I choose, it doesn't play anything.

Same problem here.

I stumbled across a pretty simple work around earlier today and it seems to work.

1. Install the latest version of Growl (1.1.2)
2. Follow the instructions on this page: http://forums.cocoaforge.com/viewtopic.php?t=15587
3. In the Applications tab in the Growl preference pane, you'll see one called "New Mail Rule"
4. Click on it and select "Configure"
5. Then you'll see the "Play Sound" drop down box. Pick your favorite mail sound.

And that's all there is to it. Not only does this get Growl working with Leopard, but it also gives you your new mail sound back.

I was having this issue, but yesterday I manually run the maintenance scripts in Terminal as covered in this topic: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5858434&#5858434 and guess what, the new mail sound is back.
So, if you don't leave your computer on 24/7, try that. It's worth a shot...
