Change Finder and trash can icons

After you change the .PNG file, try logging out or restarting. The icons don't change in the dock on the fly.

it absolutely does have something to do with com.apple.dock.iconcache, if that file exists. that file used to be in the cache directory that you mention on tiger, but in leopard it's buried cryptically elsewhere.

to find it it's easy to use spotlight now that you can look through the system files.

to search though system files, type something in the spotlight search in a finder window. then click the ➕ icon below it, and switch KIND to OTHER. wait a minute for a popup window. scroll down and select SYSTEM FILES. then click the box on the right so it always comes up. then change DON'T INCLUDE to INCLUDE.

now if you type dock or iconcache the file should surface. sometimes there is a delay in creating this file. so there is no need to delete it, in this case, and changes will be seen.

I am suffering this IDENTICAL issue...I will try the safe mode boot.

But you know what's really weird??

Log in as a guest...and look at your pretty new Finder and Trash Can icons...yes sirrr....

Try deleting "com.apple.dock.db" in your home folder's preferences folder.

Under Leopard, you can find it through Terminal with the command:

sudo find /private/var -name *iconcache*

Removing it, followed by a killall Dock, will fix your icons (assuming you've done everything else correctly).

Change the contents of Dock.app by going to system/library/coreservices/dock

control click on Dock and then choose show package contents. Copy the following files:

finder.png
trashempty.png
trashfull.png

Then replace them with new ones.

Then do the following:

1) type command and shift and g
then type
/private/var/folders/dS/
Delete the file called com.apple.dock.iconcache

2) Delete "com.apple.dock.db" in your home folder's preferences folder.

3) Restart into safe mode by holding down the shift key during restart.

4) Empty trash after restart

5) Restart the computer as you normally would

i've changed my trash icons, but the finder won't show a change. any ideas?

ALSO...command-shift-g? (as mentioned in this thread). is that correct?

also, when i reboot, i always see the original trash icon, until i use it...

Hi there, I too decided the trash needed updating.

I replaced the png files, switched users to Root, weird thing was in the Dock Resources folder the Trash icons were still the old ones, also the Icon for the Dock app was different, it was the icon from Tiger, double weird.

Anyhow one reboot later and I have a new trash can!

Not sure what is going on here, I didn't change permissions to Root for either of the replaced png files.

I hope others have more luck.

I've had luck using this method.

To follow up my post, and to see if I can post 2 screen shots, never done that in this forum.
