My Canon CanoScan 8400F scanner won't work with Leopard. When I try to scan I get the following error messages: "The necessary file could be missing or damaged, or some settings are incorrect. Reinstall the scanner driver. Scanner driver will be closed." and "Failed to open driver."

I have the newest driver and have reinstalled it numerous times. I have been in contact with Canon customer service, and hopefully they can provide a driver that works.

I see from reading the posts on other threads that drivers not working is a problem not confined to this particular brand and model.

My questions are as follows:

1. Did anyone else have this or a similar problem, but fix it? How did you fix it?

2. Does anyone have a scanner that works with Leopard? What kind is it, brand and model?

Any other hints that might get the scanner working again would be appreciated.

Thanks, DHM

I wish I had your luck go_bucks! Still not working after the 10.5.1 update. I tried running the uninstalled and then removing all remaining files I could associate with the scanner driver and software. I then reinstalled the latest version of the driver for the LiDE 25 and I still get the "missing driver" error. Hopefully an update from Canon will fix this because I'm not spending $40 on software for a $50 scanner or doing a time consuming erase and install of Leopard which may not work.

I was having the same "driver not found" problem with my 8400F under Leopard (10.5.1).

I went to Canon's website and downloaded and installed both the latest Canoscan Toolbox and the latest drivers and this fixed the problem for me.

Now both the toolbox and Photoshop work for importing.

Remember it's the drivers and not just the Canoscan Toolbox that needs replacing.

Go to Finder Library>Image Capture>TWÅIN and delete your current driver by putting it in the trash.

Then go to Application and do the same for the Canon Folder.

Now you must install the following:

Canoscan Toolbox 5.0

http://software.canon-europe.com/download.asp

AND

Canoscan 8600F Driver

http://driverscollection.com/?file_cid=24552153171CIWkRKxRHqOYKfTZ

This should fix the problem (It did for me)

Just posted today (11-26-07) NEW CanoScan Toolbox. Fixes all problems with "a driver could not be found" errors on my 8400F scanner. Everything works now!!!!!

Thanks for posting that information. I downloaded it, and everything, including the front buttons, is working now for me as well.

Without your post, I probably wouldn't have found it for a few days or weeks, depending on when I went back to Canon website to check, so thanks again.

Like many others my Canon scanner (3200F) didn’t make it through the Leopard upgrade. The “Can’t load driver” issue.

After much playing around I was able to get the CanoScan software working again. In reading through the postings it seems Canon and Apple are pointing fingers at each other. Bottom line is that the Canon software for the 3200 can be made to work. Your results may vary.

For the Canon 3200F the latest software is shown as the:
ScanGear CS 8.501 (Installer 3200F8501MXEN.dmg)
CanoScan ToolBox 4.5.0.2 (Installer CSTb4502MXEN.dmg)

Part of the problem seems to be in the plist file with the path to the driver.
@ .users/’username’/Library/Preferences/CanoScan ToolBox X.plist

I used Apple’s Property List Editor to modify / expand the path:
(Or use a program like PlistEdit Pro)

Original:
Property List: Selected Data Source
Class: String
Value: /Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources/CanoScan 3200_3200F.ds

Edited:
Property List: Selected Data Source
Class: String
Value: /Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources/CanoScan 3200_3200F.ds/Contents/MacOS/CanoScan 3200_3200F

After saving this change I locked the plist file. (using Get Info) Locking the file doesn’t seem to affect the functionality and it prevents the edited path from being changed back and the driver not working again.

I also checked the permissions on the driver itself which on my system seemed to be possibly be set incorrectly. Navigate to the driver package: /Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources/CanoScan 3200_3200F.ds
and control-click on the icon. Select “show package contents” and navigate to the Contents/MacOS folder. Select the CanoScan 3200_3200F file and do a “Get Info”. One of the permissions was set to “No Access” which I changed to “Read Only” you will have to authenticate to do this. I don’t know for sure if this last permission change is really necessary - but I do know that the CanoScan Toolbox is now working on my iMac as well / reliably as it did in Tiger. I’d first try the plist mod making sure you lock the file.

Hope this helps someone...

I have a Canon LiDE 25, which is on Canon's supported list of scanners for Leopard. It worked fine with both my MBP and my iMac G5 when running Tiger. On both machines, after doing an Archive and Install of Leopard it stopped working. I've tried running the uninstaller, installed the version of the software posted after 11/26/07, and manually deleting all associated files before reinstalling the software. No matter what I do I get the "Driver not found" error message.

Out of curiosity, I performed an installation of Leopard on an freshly formatted external drive. I booted my MBP from this drive and installed the driver and CanoScan Toolbox and everything worked fine. Now I know I could format my drives, reinstall my data and apps, and everything will likely work fine, but I'm trying to avoid the "shotgun" approach as I'd like to not only save myself the hassle, but others as well.

So far I've traced down the following files/folders associated with the scanning software and driver:

/Library/CFMSupport/CNQL1213_ButtonManager

/Library/Frameworks/SCGS110.framework

/Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources/CanoScan LiDE 25.ds

/Library/Preferences/CanoScanLiDE 25

/Library/Preferences/CSTBox.alias.pref

~/Library/CanoScan LiDE 25

~/Library/CanoScan ToolBox 4.9

~/Library/com.canon.CanoScan Toolbox 4.9.plist

~/Library/CSTB4933E.pref

/Applications/ScanGear Starter 1.1

/Applications/CanoScan Toolbox 4.9

Help me out here and please let me know of any other files you know of. I think that if I can track down all the files installed by the driver/software and remove them, I should be able to do a reinstall of the software and make it work. My guess is that there's some old pref or plist file floating around that's causing the problems. BTW, I'm pretty sure it's not one of the files in the user folder as I've tried creating a new user and I get the same error.

Thanks!

I'd try editing the plist file as I mentioned in my earlier post.
~/Library/com.canon.CanoScan Toolbox 4.9.plist
and edit the path to the driver to be:
/Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources/CanoScan LiDE 25.ds/Contents/MacOS/CanoScan LiDE 25

I found that the required files were there but for some reason there's a bug that prevents CanoScan Toolbox from finding the driver. Filling in the rest of the path in the plist file solved this issue for me and my scanner is working again. Can't make anything worse, only takes a minute with a PList editor, and might just work...

Sorry, I noticed a typo in my list of files associated with the scanner. Here are the correct paths:

/Library/CFMSupport/CNQL1213_ButtonManager

/Library/Frameworks/SCGS110.framework

/Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources/CanoScan LiDE 25.ds

/Library/Preferences/CanoScanLiDE 25

/Library/Preferences/CSTBox.alias.pref

~/Library/Preferences/CanoScan LiDE 25

~/Library/Preferences/CanoScan ToolBox 4.9

~/Library/Preferences/com.canon.CanoScan Toolbox 4.9.plist

~/Library/Preferences/CSTB4933E.pref

/Applications/ScanGear Starter 1.1

/Applications/CanoScan Toolbox 4.9

All I can say its what's been said by others. I have the OLD N1220U Canon Scanner one of the first they made and Vuescan works way better than their scanner software ever did. No complicated installs. Just have Scanner connected, Open Vuescan, and SCAN till your hearts content! Even send the file straight to the printer if you like without making a file. Vuescan has been, much improved interface wise and the new Version I'm using must be compatible with everything. The software is updated Regularly and should work with just about Anything. It works Fantastic with Leopard 10.5.1. So go to Versiontracker:

And Score a home run Happy Holidays

FYI, to find out all the files installed by an installer, use this command in Terminal:

lsbom /Library/Receipts/〈name of the package〉/Contents/Archive.bom

I used this to find all the files installed by the LiDE 25 and Canoscan Toolbox installers and removed them. Rebooted, reinstalled, but unfortunately that didn't do the trick.

Looks like the only thing that works is an erase and install of Leopard (drivers worked on a clean installation I tested on an external HD), which would require manually recreating my accounts, reinstalling all my apps, etc. That's just not worth my time. Instead I just installed Twain Sane which allows me to scan in Photoshop CS3. That's good enough for the amount of scanning I do. You can get Twain Sane here:

And there are installation instructions here:

Good luck. :P
