Scanners

My Canon CanoScan 8400F scanner won't work with Leopard. When I try to scan I get the following error messages: "The necessary file could be missing or damaged, or some settings are incorrect. Reinstall the scanner driver. Scanner driver will be closed." and "Failed to open driver."

I have the newest driver and have reinstalled it numerous times. I have been in contact with Canon customer service, and hopefully they can provide a driver that works.

I see from reading the posts on other threads that drivers not working is a problem not confined to this particular brand and model.

My questions are as follows:

1. Did anyone else have this or a similar problem, but fix it? How did you fix it?

2. Does anyone have a scanner that works with Leopard? What kind is it, brand and model?

Any other hints that might get the scanner working again would be appreciated.

Thanks, DHM

Short version: for me the software that came on the CD works fine on Leopard, the latest versions off canon web site do not work at all.

Long version
• Bought Canoscan LiDE 25 today. Intel iMac. Mac OS X 10.5.2
• Installed software off CD without rebooting. Buttons on front of scanner did not work, but scanning worked find from the software (CanoScan Toolbox 4.9, ScanGear Starter 1.1E, PhotoStudio).
• Installed latest downloads from Canon web site (cstbosx4934ej4, lide25osx11030en). New driver installer forces a reboot.
• Scanner driver not working, no scanning from new or old scanner software
• Uninstalled new software, reinstalled old software, no reboot. Scanning again.

Installing that driver worked perfectly, at least in *Image Capture* and Preview (Import image..). I previously installed the old drivers for my *CanoScan 3200F* but I could scan through the ToolBox (by editing the plist file as mentioned below). Now, somehow, the 2 drivers (or simply the 8600F driver works with TWAIN – except in Photoshop.

Thanks for your detailed hint! with the necessary file locations..

After hours of juggling.., I managed to get a CanoScan LiDE 25 to work on a MacBook Pro (Intel) with 10.5.2, only by manually putting the ColorSync profile 'CANON CanoScan LiDE 25' into the ColorSync folder into the Profiles folder within the -root- Library (path: /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/CANON CanoScan LiDE 25). That was the only apparent reason the dreaded "failed to open a driver" message popped up!

I had this problem with a Canon Lide 60. VueScan works but isn't the right solution because:

(a) the freeware version overprints a big $ sign on everything
(b) Vuescan release updates about every 5 minutes
(c) There is no automatic upgrade facility in VueScan
(d) Finding out about the almost weekly updates, d/l them and installing them is a pain in the *
(e) After a year you have to pay for all these upgrades even if you buy the full version for $40. So you only get 1 year's use out of it, then if you want to continue you have to pay again
(f) so at those conditions, it's a better deal to buy a *new scanner* but not a Canon, of course.

I hope Canon people are reading this and saying "goodbye" to all their Apple customers.

VueScan does come out with frequent updates, but they have to support a lot of scanners. If yours is working, you don't have to do the updates. You can buy the Professional version for eternal updating. You don't have to decide now. Buy the standard version, update just before the one year limit, and see how long it keeps working. If it does need more updates, you can then upgrade to the Professional version.

At which point I'll have paid $39.95 for my 1-year subscription, and then if I decide to upgrade, an additional $79.95. I make that $190.90.

For that money I can buy a completely new all-in-one !

Forget it!

Oh, not a Canon though.... 🙂

Sorry Malcolm, you're wrong about these prices. Look at the VueScan website: http://www.hamrick.com/

Prices are $39.95 for a year and then, if you decide to upgrade (following your suggestion), that would be an additional $79.95. Or if only another year, that would be another $39.95.

Either way this pricing policy, obviously designed to get money out of people, means that for me it's still "no thanks" to VueScan. I'm looking for a good all-in-one. That's a cheaper and better solution.
