Scanners

My Canon CanoScan 8400F scanner won't work with Leopard. When I try to scan I get the following error messages: "The necessary file could be missing or damaged, or some settings are incorrect. Reinstall the scanner driver. Scanner driver will be closed." and "Failed to open driver."

I have the newest driver and have reinstalled it numerous times. I have been in contact with Canon customer service, and hopefully they can provide a driver that works.

I see from reading the posts on other threads that drivers not working is a problem not confined to this particular brand and model.

My questions are as follows:

1. Did anyone else have this or a similar problem, but fix it? How did you fix it?

2. Does anyone have a scanner that works with Leopard? What kind is it, brand and model?

Any other hints that might get the scanner working again would be appreciated.

Thanks, DHM

As of Dec 9, 2007, the Scanner driver caution is that after installation that the Toolbox will not work and the caution after installation of the Toolbox is that the Scanner driver will not work.

So if you install the driver, the toolbox will not work and vice-versa. HUH?!!! Canon???

I tried to email Canon Support about this, but I got a "500 Internal Server Error."

This is very strange indeed.

Deborah - Have you seen the latest scanner driver(posted 12-7-07)for the 8400F??

The caution/restrictions don't make sense:

"UPGRADES - Newly supports Mac OS X v10.5. RESTRICTIONS 1. After upgrading ScanGear, *Toolbox* cannot be used".

I have downloaded, but not tried this yet!

Thanks for the heads-up. "After upgrading ScanGear, *Toolbox* cannot be used". That's not good. I am going to stick with what I am using for now. It is still a little sporadic, but at least I can use Toolbox.

Thanks though for pointing this out. It shows that the Canon site still bears watching. Maybe they will follow up with a new Toolbox in a few weeks.

I have a Canon Lide 25 and have tried everything listed in this forum, without success. Of course, Canon says their new drivers work with Leopard and that something must be wrong with my particular machine. And Apple says that the driver must not be compatible with Leopard. So, I have finally given up and installed the scanner under Windows (which I'm running on my Mac using VMware Fusion) and it runs just fine.

What a shame that I have to use Windows at all on my Mac!

kbtkpk, I hear ya. I tried the new driver on both my machines without success (LiDE 25 also). The only way it works with Leopard for me is with an erase and install (tested on external FW drive), but that's not worth the hassle for me. I did an Archive and Install on both of my machines and there's something about upgrading that way that makes the Canon scanners go belly up.

FYI, if you really don't want to have to use Windows to scan, try Twain Sane. Worked for me:

Are there any more clues about the cause-effect with this problem? I just got a Canoscan LiDE 25, and I'm getting the same problems ("necessary files are missing or damaged..."). I did the whole Canon phone support thing, and the guy walked me through manually deleting everything before reinstalling. No love. To be fair to the tech support guy, he was really nice and even seemed a little frustrated that he couldn't figure it out either.

So I've noticed something. By using the lsbom command in Terminal, I see that the ScanGear installer is supposed to put 4 invisible files in various places:

._Canon CanoScan LiDE 25 (in the ColorSync folder)
. CNQL1213ButtonManager.link (in Library/Preferences)
._FBCHECK.DAT (in Library/Preferences)
._Canon CanoScan LiDE 25 (in Users/Shared)

But they aren't there. Is there any setting that might be preventing the installer from placing these files?

The fix described by DickVH definitely works for me with a 8400F

I am using MacOSX 10.5.1, Canoscan Toolbox X [cstbosx4934ej4 install] and the current driver [8400fosx10240en install]

I changed the properties of

@ .users/’username’/Library/Preferences/CanoScan ToolBox X.plist

in the following manner, following DickVH's instructions:

Original:
Property List: Selected Data Source
Class: String
Value: /Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources/CanoScan 8400F.ds

Edited:
Property List: Selected Data Source
Class: String
Value: /Library/Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources/CanoScan 8400F.ds/Contents/MacOS/CanoScan CanoScan 8400F

THANKS DICKVH — I AM BACK IN BUSINESS!

Hi Aaron,

Phew...many hours of work is invested in making a cheap scanner work, but somehow it seems worth it. Your setup is remarkably similar to mine; an iMac G5 and MacBook both running 10.5.1.

My LiDE 25 works fine on my MacBook but not on the G5. Which machine did you use to format, install then boot your FireWire hard drive?

On my MacBook the scanner always makes some preparatory noises when plugged in, even before any software is launched. But no so on the iMac.

What does that tell me?

I tried to get my friends Canoscan 3200F to work again after he upgraded to Leopard using the tips given here to no avail. He has an imac G5.

In desperation I un-installed everything I could find and then reinstalled from the installation disc that came with his scanner (Canoscan Toolbox 4.5.0.2) and whatever the driver was that came with it.

Blow me down if it didn't work as it did under 10.4.

I hope those of you that have tried everything else give this a go and have a bit of luck with it.

It's so annoying to have a decent piece of equipment made useless buy all these upgrades.

I resolved the error "The necessary file could be missing or damaged, or some settings are incorrect. Reinstall the scanner driver. Scanner driver will be closed." and "Failed to open driver." by removing all the preferences with names containing CanoScan in the ~/Library/Preferences directory.

I originally created a new user account and found that the scanner worked when logged I in as the new user. Therefore, the issue had to be with my account.

I've got my LiDe30 working fine with Photoshop Elements 4 and Leopard 10.5.2

Image capture does not work (no twain driver for the LiDe30)

To get it to work with PSE4 I downloaded the latest driver from Canon dated 10/07, and after installing copied the plugin from the Canon Scan/Toolbox folder to the PSE4 plugins->import/export folder

Finally turned off the Canon button stuff in the Accounts/Startup System Preferences pane

I only scan on PSE4 so not having the cute scanning kit is no problem

I just hope that when PSE6 finally ships it doesn't break the scanner completely.
