Scanners

My Canon CanoScan 8400F scanner won't work with Leopard. When I try to scan I get the following error messages: "The necessary file could be missing or damaged, or some settings are incorrect. Reinstall the scanner driver. Scanner driver will be closed." and "Failed to open driver."

I have the newest driver and have reinstalled it numerous times. I have been in contact with Canon customer service, and hopefully they can provide a driver that works.

I see from reading the posts on other threads that drivers not working is a problem not confined to this particular brand and model.

My questions are as follows:

1. Did anyone else have this or a similar problem, but fix it? How did you fix it?

2. Does anyone have a scanner that works with Leopard? What kind is it, brand and model?

Any other hints that might get the scanner working again would be appreciated.

Thanks, DHM

Hi
Don't know if this will help, but here's my experience. I'm a new Apple user, and I just upgraded to Leopard. I have a Canon all-in-one, MP780. There were two "musts" for the scanner to work for me via Image Capture.
1. the printer/scanner had to be directly attached to the computer's usb port, not to a usb hub or to airport base station, and
2.I had to install the Canon MP780 Fax driver and select that for scanning through Image Capture.

The printer function works through the network (i.e. attached to the base station), and on a shared basis when it's directly attached to the iMac. The scan function, so far, only works on the iMac if the machine is attached directly. I can operate the scanner from a laptop using the screen sharing function in Leopard, and using it to access the iMac. Still looking for a way to network the whole thing because I've runout of USB ports on the iMac, and have to unplug one thing to operate something else.

my Canon Lide 35 works with Image capture

for now I got rid of the button manager in my login items so it doesn't start Canon's program if someone hits the buttons

so for now manual scanning, hopefully they will update the canoscan program since it it is nice to just push the button on front to mail, print, copy etc

Interestingly, if I open image capture, close it, and then open canon's program it finds the driver, ONCE and then goes back to giving me the error of failed to open driver, so hopefully won't be too hard for them to fix

Personally I think that Canon have a problem with their drivers. I have had difficulties scanning with my Lide 70 for ages under Tiger, and from a cryptic comment in an email from canon tech support I have found that it works when I scan from the first user account that I set up on the system, but not from any other, even if they have Administrator privileges. I haven't found a way round this, but it is very annoying to have to log-in to an account that I just don't ever use, just to be able to scan. I hope that when they fix their drivers they also fix this problem...

I tried Image Capture, but it doesn't work either. I tried what you suggested in the last paragraph. Still no luck. It just will not find the driver, or some part of the driver. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

The Canon telephone tech rep said that she thought it was a permissions problem and that something wasn't being installed. I read on another thread that the Apple "repair permissions" function is acting oddly. Maybe the answer lies there.

I have a Canon LIDE 70 and it works great with Leopard and Image Capture. I did a clean install of the OS so none of the old canon software was around. I downloaded the latest driver from their web site (lide70osx12120ej4.dmg) and it works fine. Image Scan meet my very simple scanning needs. Not sure if this helps but there is hope....

Cannon LIDE 600F . Worked on tiger but cano scan software was piece of crap.. Wont' work under leopard. Reloaded the dreiver from canon site. Crashes the entire computer when it runs. Only cost 129.00. Were is the trash can. Does anyone know of a scanner that works on leopard and is not a cannon.

If I have to replace my scanner, I certainly won't buy another Canon. Hopefully, they will figure out how to fix this soonest. Did you contact Canon support? They probably can't help yet, but if enough people contact them, perhaps they will perceive the public relations problem that their non-working scanners are causing.
