Scanners

My Canon CanoScan 8400F scanner won't work with Leopard. When I try to scan I get the following error messages: "The necessary file could be missing or damaged, or some settings are incorrect. Reinstall the scanner driver. Scanner driver will be closed." and "Failed to open driver."

I have the newest driver and have reinstalled it numerous times. I have been in contact with Canon customer service, and hopefully they can provide a driver that works.

I see from reading the posts on other threads that drivers not working is a problem not confined to this particular brand and model.

My questions are as follows:

1. Did anyone else have this or a similar problem, but fix it? How did you fix it?

2. Does anyone have a scanner that works with Leopard? What kind is it, brand and model?

Any other hints that might get the scanner working again would be appreciated.

Thanks, DHM

I have a Canon LIDE 70 and it works great with Leopard and Image Capture. I did a clean install of the OS so none of the old canon software was around. I downloaded the latest driver from their web site (lide70osx12120ej4.dmg) and it works fine. Image Scan meet my very simple scanning needs. Not sure if this helps but there is hope....

That is interesting. I did an archive and install and am wondering if that could have been the problem. If your scanner works after a clean install it sounds like I may have to do an erase and install to get the scanner working.

I did an archive and install. I finally threw every canon related thing I could find on my hard drive away. Then I went to the canon site. They specifically state that the driver for the Canon LIDE600F is Leopard compatible. They have just plain driver and also the Canoscan software . This time I downloaded the driver only. I got the scanner to work twice by pressing the PDF button. It brings up image capture. Then I tried pressing the copy button on the scanner. Immediatly crashed the entire computer. If the PDF buttons continue to work I can live with that for now. Just remember not to use the copy, e-mail, and fax buttons and do not run canoscan suite software as they caouse computer crashes. I did send an e-mail to cannon. Reply indicates they are working on a soultion and keep checking their site for updated drivers.

I downloaded VueScan and it worked with Leopard. (I tried the demo).

At this point, I don't want to pay $40 bucks!

Maybe I'll break down if Canon doesn't update the driver soon.

Another poster suggested that earlier, but I didn't try it at the time.

Well, I have a solution to the problem. It's not perfect but it does work.

It seems the hardware compatibility is not an issue. The problem is the scanner software. I found an inexpensive scanner utility program called VueScan which works with Leopard and is compatible with over 750 scanners. I installed and tested on my Powerbook using my Microtek 9800XL and it worked perfectly. VueScan's interface is not as intuitive as ScanMaker Pro (the Microtek scan software). but it's a working solution.

You can download a trial version of VueScan and get more info at http://hamrick.com/ and it's only $40.00 to get the registered program.

I downloaded VueScan, ran it, and my scanner is up and running. Go figure. Thank you both. I am sorry I didn't follow art4mad's suggestion in the first place. For information's sake: I didn't delete the canoscan software or driver before doing this.

As an aside, I think if VueScan's programmers can figure it out, Canon's programmers should be able to do so as well. But for now, I am just glad to have a working scanner. Thanks again

I also have a Canon scanner - the LiDE 70. It works for me with no problems under Leopard (clean install, no upgrades). I am using the same drivers and Canon program I did under 10.4.10.

driver: lide70osx12120ej4.dmg
program: cstbosx5011ej4.dmg (CanoScan Toolbox 5.0)

I would say first, uninstall the currently used drivers/program and try again. If that doesn't work, I would be curious if a fresh/clean Leopard install will make those scanners work. It could be the old drivers got corrupted during upgrade, or older programs you had installed are conflicting under Leopard.

EDIT: The drivers I posted above are dated April so I doubt they made them Leopard compatible back then. Again, it could be a number of things.

I finally followed your suggestion, and my scanner is up and running. Thank you. I am sorry now that I didn't follow your suggestion when you first posted it, but I was trying to work with Canon tech support.

I am still hoping for an updated Canon driver, but for now at least the scanner is functional.

Thank you for the information and suggestion. I am unwilling at this time to do a clean install because of the hassle of backing up all my data and reinstalling all the non-Apple programs. I will probably just buy a new scanner first.

Canon ought to be able to figure out what is conflicting. If I end up doing a fresh install, though, I will let you know how it works out.

while I agree with you on it being Canon's fault, it is not always possible for them to resolve before issuing the drivers for release. Canon (and any other maker of software) cannot tell that X computer with X programs will cause an issue. I't just not possible for them to account for the (literally) hundreds of programs that any user might install - then beyond that, it's as complex as a combination of those programs (program X and program Y cause the problem but program X and program Z do not).

I hope that doesn't confuse you hahah, but really it's not easy without end users (like us) helping them narrow it down.

Good luck either way 🙂

I think you're being overly generous to Canon. MacOS X isn't like Windows - there just aren't the same interdependencies between programs and drivers. The interface is TWAIN and the Canon driver is basically a datasource with a well-defined API. There shouldn't be any problems with permissions or anything like that if the driver is properly written. One observation I would make is that it's a shame that Canon have to develop a whole new driver for every scanner and don't try and keep their range of scanners at the same level of revision. I'm sure their problem would be much easier if it were basically the same codebase for all the scanners.

So personally i do think that Canon should be blamed for this mess, and I also think that having decent drivers that work reliably is something that you should be able to expect when you buy the products. I have a lot of respect for Canon products in general, but the poor quality for their scanner drivers is a definite black mark and they should just get their act in gear and sort it out.

Having said all of that, they are definitely far better than Microtek, who are a total shambles as far as Mac drivers are concerned.
