I installed OS X Leopard 10.5 today and now I can't open my Photoshop. The error reads "An unexpected and unrecoverable problem has occurred because of a program error. Photoshop will now exit."
I reinstalled Photoshop. Same thing happened when I tried opening it again. So far this is the only program I can't open. HELP
Unfortunately according to Adobe who states "Likely to encounter issues for which there is
no resolution" in regards to Photoshop 7, I don't there is any help to resolve the issue.
When a new OS is released it's not too hard to do a Google search to find what software is and isn't going to be compatible with the new OS in question. Typically all the major software developers release this information.
It's not asking too much to look this up before buying Leopard so you've nobody to blame but yourself I'm afraid, especially if you are using the software in a commercial environment. It's simply good business practice.
I just wanted to let everyone know that I am running 10.5 on my Mac Mini and I am using Photoshop CS. I have had no problems so far. As far as the web gallery function, I do not use it so I am unsure if it works under 10.5.
to make it short and enlighten the occuring Leopard compatibility issues a bit :
10.5.x does not run "carbonized" applications ( apps designed to run under 9 and X ),
only pure Cocoa Applications and many of them might even need some sort of update, because in 10.5.x many APIs ( Systemfunctions,Frameworks ) have changed to make use of Animation,3D, Spotlight search and what not else.
Photoshop 7 and its counterpart for Homeusers, Elements 2.0 are both Carbon, while CS,CS2 and Elements 3(CS) and 4 (CS2) are Cocoa. CS3 is the first Universal Binary, running on Intel and PPC G4/G5.
What else might raise Questions : Imovie, idvd : Versions 1,2,3,4,5 are incompatible. Iphoto 1 and 2 too. idvd Beginning with 6.04 and 7.0.1 leopard is supported., iphoto as of 6.x and higher.
Apple Works 6.29 ( latest ) is incompatible because it is carbonized and is called obsolete/replaced by iwork ( at least 08 has to work under Leopard ).
Maybe somebody wants to put up a list on the web.
To the OP/Threadstarter : If you rely on Photoshop for staying in business, I would higly recommend going back to Tiger or earlier. OS Upgrades have sometimes those unpredictible side-effects on both 3rd party hardware and software.
Photoshop 7 does not take advantage of any of the architectural changes of the Intel processor. It is still being used on machines running older versions of OSX with few problems. For me, it was running like a dog when I added an Intel Mac, and I practically drooled and paid for the update for it to run Intel native.
I'm the one that changed the machine, the OS, and my expectations. Since there are no features of CS3 that you need, then there are probably at least 2 or 3 very good free or cheap programs you can get to replace it.
Photoshop isn't cheap, but this new MBP and Intel iMac weren't chump change either. After upgrading my equipment, I knew that I would have to fork out the dough for applications designed to run on them.
I do expect a company to support their software for at least 5 years after sale, on the platform and equipment it was designed to run on. I don't expect a company to have to completely overhaul an obsolete version of their software for a machine that's not being sold anymore, or an OS that is out of date.
That would be like trying to get Apple to create a version of Safari, or Microsoft to update IE to version 5, 6, or 7, to run on my Quadra 840av and OS9.
Okay...so I have a question that is probably simple to answer...
Can I go ahead and purchase the upgrade CS3 or do I need to purchase the new program at $650? I am a little nervous about getting the upgrade and something not working properly.
Thank you so much for any assistance anyone can provide!
That was fast! Thank you for such a quick response. Upgrade, it is. My only concern is since I am getting the same error as the original person who posted this thread, that it might not recognize that I have the program to upgrade it from. Would that even be a possibility?
Not sure because I haven't tried it on Leopard. I do know it's not supported. I also know I've been using CS 3 successfully with Leopard since the day Leopard came out, with no major issues.
I've been reading the string & have a question of my own. I have The "Adobe Design Collection" purchase 8/02 w. Phtshp. 7. Does anyone know if this can be upgraded to CS3's Photoshop?
I know that last year that Adobe was selling an upgrade from PS 7 to PS CS2 but I think that offer has expired now. Your best bet is to call Adobe and ask them. they can tell you very quickly exactly what you need to do to upgrade.
