Quicktime Logo on all website videos i.e. youtube, myspace
Please help. I have Quicktime Pro. Any website that has video on it wont let me play it. It always has the quicktime logo on the screen where the video should be!!!! I tried changing the MIME settings in quicktime preferences. I unchecked the box next to miscellaneous as i read on youtube to do this. Im new to apple mac so Im still getting used to it. This might sound like a stupid question but when you change settings and just close the box using the x button does this apply the changes or how do I apply the changes after changing settings?? Please if anyone has a solution for me please tell me as im going mental trying to work it out. Macbook is going to have itself a little fall from top floor window if I cant fix it LMAO. Cheers people. Tracy
Sorry, after I downloaded QT 7.3 I checked and I do have all the plugins. Again this is only happening on my G4, not my intel G5. Apple support had me delete certain com.caches and prefs & plists and then rebooted to create clean ones, but none of that helped. They thought the QT 7.3 would fix it but no....
I found the recommendations below from Mark R. Jones. Did it all & it worked --- finally.
Removing the "QuickTime Plugin.webplugin" & updating the permissions did nothing!
I did find that Adobe confirms problems with Flash Player 9 & Leopard. They are apparently working on a fix.
Try this (below) it works for me. The only thing I did differently is that I placed the items immediately in the trash WITHOUT emptying trash so that if necessary I would be able to retrieve them if needed.
Re-install latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer 9.0
Re-install latest version of Flip-4-Mac
Go to “Finder” Home directory
Select “Preferences” folder
Drag the following objects out of the Preferences folder onto your desktop:
"com.apple.quicktime.plugin.preferences.plist"
"com.apple.quicktimeplayer.plist"
"com.apple.Safari.plist"
"com.macromedia.Flash Player.app.plist"
"com.macromedia.FLVencoder.plist" (If you have this one installed)
"QuickTime Preferences"
Restart computer
Open Quicktime: In Quicktime Preferences "Advanced" set "Enable Flash"
Close Quicktime
Open Safari: In Preferences "Security" set "Enable Plug-ins"
Test Video playing (YouTube, Google, . . . )
Delete plists / preferences from your desktop (Drag them into the trash)
Hope it works for others. It ended 4 days of shear frustration
I assumed (hate that word) that you meant finder->go->home->library->preferences. Followed all your steps (Adobe had 10.5 dwnld) except could not find any of the "com.macromedia" you show. Restarted and only QT Advanced "enable flash" needed to be changed as Safari was still enabled. Everything appears to be working 🙂
This is what Apple Support had me do which did not work, but that was before there was the new 10.5 dwnld for the Flash Player... So that must have been the problem. Again I have to say I'm very surprised this was not caught in the beta testing!!!! Thanks for your help and followup 🙂
I have been searching for a solution and came across this thread. Wish I could contribute but I am in need of help. I have the "Q" of death on many pages. Not on youtube however. Any suggestions for my particular case? I have only experienced this on my intel iMac. I removed all the "com.apple..." as suggested earlier but that didn't help. I guess I'll put them back. Please pass on any advice you might have. Thanks.
AAZ and I were having the problem only on our non-intel G4s so I'm not sure our "cure" would work for you. The com.apple... files you removed will be or were created anew (how many people actually get to use the word 'anew' in a sentence 🙂 when you rebooted your machine. I would check the Adobe Flash 9 download at their site to make sure you got the version for 10.5. If your not sure, go ahead and download and install it again. Also make sure your QT is 7.3 or download and install it. Then go check you preferences in both Safari & QT... Hope these suggestions help.
This is a worlwide problem, which in some cases is solved for me by moving from Firefox to Safari.
If french is familiar to you, you can find another solution at
I did all of that and my problem was fixed, no more Q? on any sites but I am still having a problem. I'm using firefox and every time I try to view videos from www.metacafe.com the video will pop up for a second then disappear and i can only hear sound. when i scroll down to a point where part of the video is not on the page anymore, the video comes back. I also tried this using safari and all was normal for that. how can i fix this problem for firefox?
On your G4 try reinstalling Flash Player, Repair Disk Permissions, and uncheck the "Enable Flash" box in the QuickTime System Preferences Advanced tab.
