iPhone on O2 UK...

Hi Folks,

I understand a few of you seem to feel as if there is not enough information available.

Most info can be found on the O2 website.

Anyone who has any questions relating to the iPhone, feel free to ask...

I do currently work for O2, and i am fully trianed on the iPhone.

Please remeber: Any information i give is to the best of my knowledge, and no response by me is that of O2 UK.

The iPhone will be 'launched' from store's at 6. 02 pm.

U will have to be 18.

The shop will process your order, but activation f your iPhone will be done online by yourself.

With regards to EDGE, at the moment, although O2 has an EDGE network, O2 customer service do not have a tool to assess coverage.

This tool is expected to be in place by launch.

Any questions?

Hi

Just out of interest, do you know what the expected demand/distribution will be? I won't be able to queue for hours before hand since I will be at work. Am I likely to be able to walk down for about 5ish and not be queuing to the other end of the high street?

Note I work in Hemel Hempstead if that helps, not a big place but there is an O2 store and a carphonewarehouse opposite each other, I can't imagine there will be hundreds of people camping out in Hemel Hempstead to get the phone.

So glad you've joined us!

My three questions:

1. Porting my telephone number: I think I read somewhere that in the US, until a customer's existing mobile number has been transferred ('which may take a few days') the customer will be able to make calls from the iPhone but not receive them. Is this the same for O2? If so, do I take it that I will be making calls using a number assigned by default to my iPhone, and that I will still be able to make/receive calls on my old phone and number?

2. Out of tariff charges: what will they be? Sometime I make 175mins if calls per month. Once in a while it is 250mins. I need to have an idea whether I should go for the £35 of £45 option. To help me make the decision I need to know what the out of tariff charges will be.

3. There has been some debate about whether the phone reverts to GPRS when out of EDGE coverage. I downloaded the iPhone manual and can't find an answer. Will it?

Hi,

Thanks for answering questions:

1. What is the Fair Usage Policy on the data plans? We have been told that it is 200mb per month
2. What happens if you go over this? Charged - how much?
3. Does this go for the 60 hours on The Cloud that we have read - again what happens when you go over this?
4. If Apple release a 3G version in the next 6 months, will it be as easy as to buy a new iPhone, activate through iTunes and move your contract over to the newer iPhone (as this would be a like-for-like contract)?
5. What are the call / text charges outside the minutes you use?
6. Will calls / texts be rolled over per month?
7. Will data be rolled over per month?
8. What insurance is available?
9. O2 long weekend - is this available also?

Thanks for these answers in advance...

EvilHomer1980:

Keeping your number - Will get back to you on this one, no exact details on the porting process.

Temporary number - all handsets will come with a mobile number.

Fraggleman: Likely queuing expectations - I do not have an answer to this to be honest as it is unpredictable, but from what i understand, the stores are unlikely to run out of stock, and the buying process should not take as long as a normal contract.

Porting - As above, no exact details.
You will have a temporary number, and will be able to make/receive calls.Porting will take standard 5 working days, 4 days your old num.

Tariff charges - These have not yet been announced. I will post these when they information is publicly available.

EDGE to GPRS - simply no, as far as i am aware the handset does not use GPRS.

gareth26: No Prepay offer is in the pipeline at the moment. Credit checks - as far as i am aware, the amount of people failing is expected to be minimal.

ssjohnson:

1. & 2. I will post this when the information is publicly available.
3. Like any Fair Use Policy, there would be warnings and explanations of next steps. This should not be a concern for customers to be honest.
4. This is not something that has been looked at yet.
5. I will post this when the information is publicly available.
6. I would say this is a no.
7. I would say this is a no to.
8. Yes, no exact details yet. Again, i will post once i have any.
9. No, no long weekends.

Hi

Thanks for the answers. Most make sense. I'm surprised about edge though, I'd just assumed it would switch, I thought edge was a kind of enhanced enhanced GPRS?

Mind you saying that GPRS is next to useless for most web browsing anyway, I'd imagine you'd pull your teeth out trying to get a page that way.

It is a shame that Apple leave it so late to give this type of info, it creates hype but it also means a lot people are surely going to be returning their iPhone when they realise its missing functionality or realise the cost of ownership. That said I'll hopefully be there on the 9th fully aware of the in's and out's of owning an iPhone.

Further to last mail and for anyone interested, as I suspected, it seems the iPhone will be fine on GPRS, its listed on the O2 iPhone FAQs page that has just appeared

http://www.o2.co.uk/assets/O2HybridNav/Static-files/iphone/iPhone-FAQs.html

It still doesn't answer a lot of questions, which I guess we'll find out on the day, I just don't want to have to spend loads of time in store asking them, hopefully O2 will update the site with all the details I need in the morning so I have time to read before heading off to the store.
