iPhone on O2 UK...

Hi Folks,

I understand a few of you seem to feel as if there is not enough information available.

Most info can be found on the O2 website.

Anyone who has any questions relating to the iPhone, feel free to ask...

I do currently work for O2, and i am fully trianed on the iPhone.

Please remeber: Any information i give is to the best of my knowledge, and no response by me is that of O2 UK.

The iPhone will be 'launched' from store's at 6. 02 pm.

U will have to be 18.

The shop will process your order, but activation f your iPhone will be done online by yourself.

With regards to EDGE, at the moment, although O2 has an EDGE network, O2 customer service do not have a tool to assess coverage.

This tool is expected to be in place by launch.

Any questions?

I spoke to O2 customer services last weekend and they confirmed that any minutes in excess of the allocated allowance are charged at £0.20/minute regardless of calls to UK landlines or mobiles.
This would mean that you only need to make 50 minutes more calls before it makes more sense to choose the £45 package over the £35 one..sadly I never asked about text messages! 200 a month sounds quite a bit and then I realised that I send about 5 a night discussing what train I am on and what's for dinner.. that's about 110 a month to the Mrs alone ⚠
This information can be viewed on the O2 website under pay monthly tariffs which quote 20p/min.
That certainly helped me to make my mind up!
What has annoyed me is the 6.02pm sale time....How patronising to treat us Brits and have television pictures neamed around the world with everyone queueing. I shall only conclude with the words, Apple, Hyoe.

hi i am currently on o2 simplicity £20 and am getting the iPhone as soon as i can am i right in thinking that i keep the sim card that comes with the iPhone in the iPhone and activate with that and during activation enter my phone number and other details in and existing number transfers over and get charged no differently other than paying the extra £15/mnth for the £35/mnth plan and get charged no extra?!?

It seems that there are an awful lot of people asking very important questions before they shell out best part of £300 and not a lot of informative answers coming back.

For me the 18 month lock-in is almost a deal-breaker. Added to the fact that the EDGE is slow and there will only be 30% EDGE coverage makes that deal even weaker.

However, the major issue for me, and I'd really like a definitive answer to this, not some un-informed guess, is about upgrading in the future.

Steve Jobs has already said that a 3G 2nd gen iPhone is in the works and expects it to be out early 2008 (end of 1st Q early 2nd Q). If I buy an iPhone and am locked in for 18 months how can I upgrade to the 2nd generation iPhone if it is released during the course of my shackled contract? Will I be able to buy a new phone and pop my iPhone SIM card in?

Thanks for all the helpful answers. I am still disappointed that was told by 02 few weeks ago if registered they would give info by email and still nothing!!

My main hope was that, as an existing O2 customer with 2 accounts, I would be able to preorder.

I am working to 4pm on the 9th live near Edinburgh so unsure if I should trust O2 stores or Car phone warehouse will have stock, or drive to Glasgow Apple Store for 6 pm.

I so want one fro partner and myself on the Friday ....

Looking forward to more information hopefully soon!!

I've read elsewhere there will be no additional charges for those on the simplicity deals. you number will be transferred if that's want you want. only those on "normal contracts" will be charged depending when they got the contract.
and gus enjoy your trip along the M8 at 4 o'clock on a Friday afternoon!!!!
I'm heading into Glasgow around 1pm should be plenty of time.

What is wrong with the on sale time?

6:02pm.

6:00 the normal Apple release time for any product. Doesn't matter where in the world you are. You queue, you have the countdown and in you go. The Americans had to do it on 29 June and they had to go thru it in all four time zones!

And the extra 2 minutes, just for the marketing 'fun of it'.

It's nothing to do with being patronising. And what better advertising for a product can you get (when you have Carphone Warehouse saying they expect to sell 10,000 units on opening night) to show thousands of people waiting to get the biggest Apple product of the year and walking into a store, buying it and walking out in just a few minutes?

You can't buy advertising like that. Especially when you know it's gonna be played out on all the news channels, including the BBC where you cant buy any advertising.

Hi all

On the subject of Tariffs, does anyone know if it will be possible to change to a higher tariff at a later date or once you choose your tariff are you stuck with it for the 18 months?

I did a quick look over my current bills for the last 8 months and in all cases, where I did use more than 200 minutes and 200 texts, I never used enough that it would cost me £10 more (assuming the tariff on the o2 store). However, who knows, with the iPhone I may suddenly find a new urge to call and/or text people.

So my thought if I can is to get the £35 option, and then if I suddenly find my bill creeping, give the people at O2 a call and get them to increase it. I've done this plenty of times with normal contracts, but then the O2 contract does not seem that normal.

GPRS - Correction to before, handset will use GPRS.

Pre-payment - stores should not be doing this to be honest, so no.

Delivery of handsets (ordered online) will be standard 2-3 working days.

The iPhone will only work fully with a unique sim which has been designed towork in the device. Standard sim cards will not work properly.

No call charges have been made available, either to me, or publicaly, so any figures given at this point are guess work of whoever advises you this.

Compared to XDA Orbit - I cannot comment as i have no used an Orbit fully, but the iPhone is not slow.

Simplicity customers will only need to pay handset cost and arrange transfer of mobile number, this will then cancel your Simplicity account, and you will then only pay for 1 contract for the iPhone.

The handset will revert to GPRS when EDGE is not available, so this sghould not be a worry.

If and when a new iPhone is launched, will O2 decide a policy. This is not a priority at this point in time, and there is no answer to your question. Sorry.

O2 does not treat any customer with preference to another, in allowing you to pre-order. Everyone will have a fair and equal opportunity as to when they can buy.

Gus - You could either use the store locator www.o2.co.uk/storelocator to find stores by town or postcode. Again, stores are unlikely to run out of stock.

Glasgow People - You could try our office, located at Skypark, we have an O2 Store.

Hope i've not missed anything, if so let me know...

I am kinda irked that (being a Carphone Warehouse O2 customer) I have to port my number... that is really irritating!

I have had a barrage of 'do you want to upgrade' phone calls, but have been holding off for the launch.

*On the subject of upgrading the hardware.....*

The phone is bought outright by you... if you want to buy another one then just do it.

I see no reason why you couldn't have one for each day on the same contract. You just go in and buy it.
