Hi is there any info on the noise of the new G5´s. Looking at the picture´s there seems to be an update to cooling design, just wondering if anybody has some feedback yet....

those readings, were they at idle cpu ?
Yes, idle cpu
I too am finding it impossible to make this machine make any kind of noise! At one point I was paranoid that the fans were not rotating at all and that my processor was burning up. As I peered through the mesh at the front of the case I could see them spinning away but I could not hear them at all - kind of like watching a silent movie.
Right now I have switched off my rattling PC server and put the Mac's CPU setting on 'Highest' - and I can appreciate the PM even more. In fact I never thought it was possible that any computer could be this quiet. I assume the 2/2.3 and Quad are all built on the same architecture so I'm sure they will all perform as well.
With this alongside the new quiet iMacs, I think Apple really may have cracked it this time!

This is good news about the temperature and fans but what about the firewire and audio ports? Are they sending any garbage out, chirps, static, etc.?
headspace,
Thanks for your info. I have a BTO on its way and that has to go in the bedroom. The DirecTivo fan already drives me nuts. Good to know the PowerMac won't contribute to the noise!

Glad to be of service. I hope you have similar experiences with your new PM! I should also note that there is very little heat coming from the machine, infact almost the entire case is practically cold with only minor warmth around the back.
As for static, I am yet to buy some decent speakers so for now I have plugged in some crappy old things that I used to use with my old PC. As a first impression, there are certainly no noises that shouldn't be there and music sounds very crisp and clear, even through these old things. I will have to test that properly once I blow even more money on some speakers.
I only visited the Apple Store originally to buy a new iPod, and this is what I end up buying... and still no iPod!

Ricky,
what's your processor setting (from "preferences -> energy saver")? minimum, automatic, or highest?
I have a DP 2.7 and if I set the performance to highest the fans never ramp up. If I set it in automatic then yes, the typical jet-like noise for a few seconds when I initiate a cpu-intensive task.
thanks,
Julian

Hello Julian!
The setting is/was on "automatic" all the time, but no "airplane-sound".
Slight reving up at 78°, that seems to be it. Haven´t tested it with the other settings, but i don´t expect different behaviour.

Ok, I'm officially jealous. VERY jealous!
Quick question to the other Dualcore owners: does your machine also have the red LED illuminating shortly (about one second) when turning it on or awakening it from sleep?
Seems to be the "checkstop"-LED. No idea what it means, but propably nothing good as the manual suggests to contact service when it illuminates.
But it only does when powering it on not when in use, so that might just be normal. Is ist? 🙂

Hello all,
I have one of the "bothersome" 1.8SP (late 2004) that I bought mainly with the idea of having a powerful but silent computer.
Apart from all the other problems with the machine, it has been quite silent. Using Hardware Monitor reports 800 RPM in both the the intake fans and 1000 RPM for the back fan. Not bad. In addition to that, the 9600 is passively cooled (both the PCI and disk fans are to 1%, according to HM).
Are you saying than your new dualcore 2.0 idles at 500 RPM?? How about the nvidia card (assuming the 6600LE) is that also passively cooled?
Thanks for your answers! I might consider update this machine (if Apple does not fix it shortly)

Hello Tomas!
I also owned the late 2004 Single before I got the new Dualcore.
I didn´t compare them one on one, but if I I compare the DC to my memory of the Single, the DC isn´t louder at all, maybe even a bit quieter.
Hardware Monitor reports the fans at following rpm:
CPU A Exhaust: 515
CPU B Exhaust: 515
CPU A Intake: 499
CPU B Intake: 499
Drive Bay Intake: 1000
Expansion Slot Intake: 1560
Mainboard Back: 1100
The GeForce6600LE ist passivly cooled, the 6600 by a fan.

I called Applecare and they did not have any notes on it. The very helpful woman said there notes said it was a problem if it stays on. The machine works great and there are no fan or noise issues so mabey it is normal. I am thinking it is a bug in the firmware or something. Anyone else have any ideas.

Hello!
Mabye its just some kind of of self-test during boot-up (The name checkstop itself sounds a bit like that).
I also assume that it would stay on if theres a problem. No no reason to worry I guess. To be shure, I ran the hardwaretest and it returned no problem.

Does the GeForce 6600 make any audible noise ?
