Hi is there any info on the noise of the new G5´s. Looking at the picture´s there seems to be an update to cooling design, just wondering if anybody has some feedback yet....

Thanks for the info, Headspace! That's the kind of news I was waiting for before pulling out my credit card. Having to deal with a QuickSilver for about three years, I will definitely "enjoy the silence." My dilemma now is whether i should go with the 2.0 0r 2.3GHz.

me, too. think i may bite this bullet....
please keep posting your experiences with the new machines. i'd especially like to hear from audio pros who have good amps and speakers hooked up to the audio out of the G5 about processor/digital noise in that...
tia.

Definitely no noise from the power supply. Let's hope it stays that way. I'm one very happy Apple customer... at last! If anyone needs me to do some tests, let me know and I'll try them out wherever possible.
I would like to know the temperatures of this new dual core 2 Ghz G5
at idle and at max load
does it have a setting to let the one core sleep when idle automatically or must on turn off core manually ?

dtich, we just ordered one and will be using it in our home studio. Shipping won't be for another 6-8 weeks since it will have the Nvidia 7800 but I'll post back when we get it.
Hello!
I would like to know, how it behaves when tested with "SystemLoad" ( http://www.bresink.com/osx/SystemLoad.html).
That ist a program to produce artificial load on the CPUs and it even can try to play a scale on the power supply on the noisy G5s.

Jn,
You poor guy, having to deal with a Quicksilver for three years. Quicksilvers are beautiful machines, I just bought one from somebody last month and I pimped it out just for fun. But I guess you're right, they are NOISY. Mine sounds like a 747 after I got through with it...

I have been using a new 2.3 DC and it is very quiet. It replaced a MDD so next to thw wintunnel it is a dream. I forget it is running some times. I have been running system load at 98% for about 5 min now and nithing noise wise.
Luckily, I got mine today (not bad, shipped within one day :))
Running some tests right now. Putting under full load with system load. No noise at all. No chirping, beeping and even no fan reving up to now.
CPU temp is 61°C/142°F at the moment, but still climbing slowly.
Totally satisfied up to now, but still will run some other tests (had the buggy 1.8 Single before...)
While I wrote this, the temp climbed to 146°F/63,5°C, still no higher fan activity.
Observing it with Hardware Monitor.

ricky2000, whats the temps when idle or almost idle ?
can you turn off a core ? does the temp go down then ?
I had the oppertunity of trying a dual 2.7 this summer and it made my warm room to hot for my taste, so I am hoping these dual cores are less of a room-heater than the previous dual G5's.

Hi Helge!
Temperature while idling seems to be around 40°-45°C/104°-113°F.
Power saving options are "minimum", "maximum" and "automatic", so apparently no possibility to shut one core off at this time. But as I heard, the OS the G5 ships with is a special version of 10.4.2 (with added Dualcore support). Possibly, 10.4.3 will bring further options. But only speculation.

thats pretty good
now I wonder how the temps on the dual core 2.3 are
hope someone gets it and can post them
installing developer tools and chud normally puts a 'processor' module in system preferences
On a dual 2.7 I was able to manually turn off 1 cpu
Wonder if dual cores are the same with that ?

My day of experiments with the DC continues 🙂.
Tried to rev up the fans to check the cooling system.
Put Systemload to 100%. That wasnt enaugh. So I carefully warmed the air that the G5 "breathes" with a hairdryer. (I should never tell my girlfriend that I hairdried my computer... :D). That brought the CPU-temp smoothly to more than 70°.
At about 78°C/172°F the CPU intake and exhaust fans revd slowly up from ±500 to 700 or 800rpm. But hardly noticable. Only the diagram of HardwareMonitor made it clear. No turbine at all.
So a **** of a silent machine. Hardly imaninable that it will reach that temperature without any "help" from outside.

ricky2000, whats your current room temperature ?
Hi everybody!
I have a dualcore 2.3 GHz (with a second internal hard drive installed by myself) and with the GeForce 6600.
After 4 hours of work, including some video compressions, the device is still silent (in a very quite environment). It makes a VERY BIG difference with my previous Mac which was a PowerMac dual 1 GHz G4 MDD (that one was very noisy...).
According to Temperature Monitor, the temperatures are at this moment:
CPU A0 DIODE TEMP: 49.6 °C / 121.4 °F
CPU A1 DIODE TEMP: 49.8 °C / 121.6 °F
DRIVE BAY: 33.0 °C / 91.4 °F
GRAPHICS PROCESSOR CHIP: 54.0 °C / 129.2 °F
MAIN LOGIC BOARD AIR INLET: 24.0 °C / 75.2 °F
MAIN LOGIC BOARD BACKSIDE: 25.2 °C / 77.5 °F
TUNNEL: 37.4 °C / 99.3 °F
TUNNEL HEATSINK: 34.0 °C / 92.2 °F
Outside temperature here in Paris is now 23°C.
I am very happy with this Mac for the moment.
