New Macbook - Keyboard freezes

i'm getting this now too on a macbook purchased late last week. i seem to get it often when waking from sleep ...

pls pls pls let this be a sw problem, and may it be resolved soon (before my 14 days are up)

Today, actually yesterday, I got my new MacBook 2,2GHz. During the registration process of Leopard, the keyboard troubles begun. I couldn't type in my phone number or a password with numbers, because the keys from 1 to 8 and ctrl were dead.

After the registration process I immediately checked the keyboard settings, I installed all Updates and I tried something like repair the rights etc. Nothing happens…

I tried to press key combinations and afterwards, I pressed all Keys from 1 to 8. That solved the problem provisionally. But the same Keys freezes again, and again… I hope it's a software problem, not a hardware problem, and Apple fixed it soon!!! 😟

Just to add one more voice to the list, my (several month old) MacBook Pro is now suffering from this problem. It never did until I upgraded to Leopard a couple of days ago. I can't make it freeze on demand, or really offer any help, but it looks remarkably like yet another software issue with Leopard. Am now regretting not waiting until the bugs got ironed out. Bring on 10.5.1.

How did people get on with the genius bar? I'm eager to hear an official line on this, so please do report back. Thanks.

Well, I can tell you this much . . . attaching a keyboard works. Until I can get to the Apple Store at least I can use the computer. It was too annoying to try to use it with the keyboard coming in and out, so I attached a standard apple keyboard and it works fine. I hope this is one of the bugs they get to in 10.5.1 . . . can anybody out there with the beta give us a hint?

Yub! Same problem here. I just got my new Macbook a couple of days ago. Every once in a while the keyboard won't respond. The mouse works well though. I just logout and log back in and everything seems to work again. It seems to me that this is a software problem. I really hope that this is a software problem. I don't want to take back the Macbook and transfer everything again!!! APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS!!!

Stumbling on this reminded me of an issue I had after installing Leopard. I installed clean and then did migration assistant from my Tiger disk. Everything worked fine and I explored around.

Have to say I don't like it very much, and even perhaps prefer the look and feel of Vista which definitely wasn't the case with Tiger.

After a couple of days a very odd thing happend though. I booted up, and noticed that the number lock and caps lock lights were both on.

I never have either of these on so turned them off. Which rendered me unable to type anything. Turning the number lock back on allowed me to type, but only in capitals.

Unless i turned caps lock off.

Rebooting solved the issue and it hasn't happened again, but there ae several other niggles that leave me wanting to re-install Tiger. I never thought I'd say this cos I am a big Apple fanboy, but my experience so far weith Leopard is of a poor, over-hyped OS that hasn't been properly quality controlled before shipping.

Perhaps it's naive, but I expected better of Apple!

This is definitely a problem with Leopard. I have an MBP (Santa Rosa, June '07) which developed the same intermittent KB freeze after upgrading. The cavalry (10.5.1) should be just over the hill, Pilgrims.

I've had the same problem. I've had a MacBook Pro for about 3 months, and my keyboard locked up about 5 days after installing Leopard. On the first day it happened, I experienced it twice in about 2-3 hours.

I'm having a similar issue, but unlike some of you, I'm still running tiger. A USB keyboard works fine, but the built in one doesn't respond to anything. It even no longer lights up in low-light situations. This seemed to have begun after updating to 10.4.9. It's on my macbook pro 2.4 Core 2 Duo.

Hello, I bought my new macbook on Halloween, and had the same exact problem several times after installing the leopard upgrade. After searching the web, I found a suggestion to reset the PRAM (I never heard of this before either). I followed the directions here:

and have not had a problem since. I am keeping my fingers crossed and hope this fixes the problem. For those having the problem frequently, let me know if this works for you, it may be that the leopard upgrade does something to the PRAM. If it works for someone else, I will rest easier knowing that the problem isn't just waiting for my 14 days to pass before rearing its ugly head again.

Interestingly enough I've not actually had the problem since typing my first message here (which was so annoying that I rebooted the macbook immediately after posting). This wasn't the first reboot after the problem appeared, but I've not rebooted since, and I've not had the problem either.

Maybe a couple of reboots cleared the problem out, maybe the problem is lurking around waiting to re-appear...it's a shame that I've lost a bit of confidence in my favourite new toy 😟

Anyway, if the problem re-appears I'll be sure to try the PRAM thing, sounds like a decent bet. The only thing is that if the problem is so intermittent that it takes days between appearing it's going to take a while before peeps can confidently identify a fix.

I have seen some slow down or pauses after the upgrade to Leopard. In my particular case it was due to Spotlight indexing. Have you guys checked for that? It's pretty simple just look for a dot in the middle of the Spotlight magnifying lens.

It's not really slowdown, the system is perfectly responsive when this happens, it's just that you can't type anything! You can flick quite happily between apps using the mouse, and browse etc.

Worth keeping an eye on though to see if the two things correlate..

My son's 5 month old MacBook, which he upgraded to Leopard shortly after it was available, started having the keyboard freeze problem, so we just reset the SMC, a few minutes ago:

We'll see if that does it. In general, I find if the computer's acting a bit funny, reset the SMC, sometimes that'll fix it right up.

I'm still on 10.4.10 with my MacBook, haven't upgraded to Leopard yet. No keyboard problems for me!

Same problem. Adjusting the screen worked for me. Doesn't seem like that would be a software issue?!?!
