Keynote Won't Play video on presentation

I am doing a presentation for school and I am trying to put in a .mov file into my presentation. When I play my presentation, all that I can hear is the sound of the video but not picture, the screen is just blank. I've tried different formats and different videos and nothing seems to work. I am just going to play if off my monitor that is connected to my Mac mini, I am not going to connect it to a projector or anything like that. Videos do play normally on QuickTime. Anyone know a solution of have heard of this problem before? I am using Keynote '08 and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

Mac mini 1.83 Intel Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 80GB HDD, Mac OS X (10.5), PowerMac G3 Server (10.2.8), iMac Sage, iMac 333, and iBook SE 466

I'd like to confirm that uninstalling Perian worked for me! Great! That was easy. Here's what I did:

1. Go to System Preferences and click on the Perian icon (If you don't see this icon, that means you don't have Perian installed):

2. Click on the "Uninstall Perian" button. That's it! When I tried watching a .mov or .mp4 video clip in Keynote, it worked like a charm.

me too, I'm wondering if it is a Perian or a quicktime problem, under Tiger it seems to affect certain .mov formats only (sorensen, H264, jpeg-video, etc.).
I had exactly the same problems with keynote 4.0.1 on two g4 under Tiger, one with perian installed, the other without.
mp4 is working for me and my solution for the moment (even if all other external formats ar working too - wmv, divx, avi).

Had a large audience yesterday and found out immediately before the presentation that I should not mention movies. In my case, it seems that Perian was the culprit. Maybe other QT-plugins make also trouble and that deep inside it is a QT7.3-Problem.
Thanx community and good luck for those that still search other ways out of this dilemma.

Hi,

I've been trying to define the limits of the problems and possible workarounds until an update appears. The big temporary fix is to create a new user (temporarily). You can take any keynote file then and open it up in the new user and it will present properly in the new user. The smaller fix is to re-encode the video as some others have suggested. H.264, Mpeg, Avi, don't seem to work, but other codecs like H.263 do. Just to save you all some time there doesn't seem to be any other real solution but to wait for an update. I spent 4 hours at an Apple store working the problem with all the top Geniuses and Creatives. Hope that helps.

I can confirm that removing Perian fixes part of the problem, but better yet, is to leave Perian on your computer and in Keynote under Preferences/Slideshow select "Allow Exposé, Dashboard and others to use the screen".

This error (and fix) is known by the Perian team, but apparently it is a bug within Keynote rather than Quicktime and Perian. Read more on http://trac.perian.org/ticket/263

Selecting the solution above, fixed it for me.

I to can confirm that uninstalling Perian has solved my issue.

Actually, before I came on the boards, I was moving files from one keynote to another and my macbook all of a sudden shut down and restarted. Couldn't believe it. Thankfully I did not lose a lot of work, but still, I let Apple know. I'm glad to know I'm testing for Apple! Though I assume that responsibility for buying Leopard right off the bat. Haha, hope everyone finds their solution, and thank you to those figured out the Perian fix. Cheers ~

Same thing here, too. quite curious, but same software gives different results on 2 different machines: Keynote 4.0.1 and QT 7.3 work fine on MBP 10.5, whereas I get blank image when playing videos in Keynote on my mini 10.5 with the same sw configuration. no perian on both macs.
please apple give us an answer!
