Keynote Won't Play video on presentation

I am doing a presentation for school and I am trying to put in a .mov file into my presentation. When I play my presentation, all that I can hear is the sound of the video but not picture, the screen is just blank. I've tried different formats and different videos and nothing seems to work. I am just going to play if off my monitor that is connected to my Mac mini, I am not going to connect it to a projector or anything like that. Videos do play normally on QuickTime. Anyone know a solution of have heard of this problem before? I am using Keynote '08 and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

Mac mini 1.83 Intel Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 80GB HDD, Mac OS X (10.5), PowerMac G3 Server (10.2.8), iMac Sage, iMac 333, and iBook SE 466

Hi,

The thing is that I have never had Perian on my system, but also shared this problem it seems with quite a few others. I was waiting for an update to resolve the issue but the "Allow Expose, Dashboard, and others to use screen," under preferences fixes the problem completely. So, for anyone in the same situation, give that a try.

Dear Edwardsean

You are my hero. Your solution works. Thanks a million. How did you get the idea in the first place? I have lost many hours trying to solve the problem.

Checking "Allow Expose, Dashboard, and others to use screen" in the preferences of Keynote has not slowed down the presentation in spite of the warning below the checkbox, at least not over what Keynote 4 has slowed it down already compared to Keynote 3.

DivX, MPEG 2, muxed or demuxed video, WMP etc., all work fine. *If you are in inmediate need*, use these formats. The screen controls also work beautifully with these formats.

It is clear that *MPEG-4 with or without H.264* does not work well. QT Movies do not display

Will try what is advised further down in these discussion, that is, deleting all QT files & preferences and re-installing. Will let you know outcome

I had same problem but not as lucky to find the solution in time. 10 physicians paid good money for me to teach them ultrasound for two days. First time Mac has let me down in 7 years. I ended up basically doing charades and looked/felt like a *******. That night I found the post regarding converting it all to WMVs,and then spent 5 hours converting all my videos to WMV (which seemed to cut off the last 25% or so of each clip). Only after the course was over was the post regarding the expose fix - many thanks to the person who discovered the fix - just wish I had found this before I wasted 5 hours. Of course all my QT videos work now so I'm deleting all the WMVs I needlessly made.

In the end I guess I should have known better and checked to make sure all the presentations ran after updating to a new OS before going in front of an audience...

I had exactly the same problem as others: qt movies in iWork 08-Keynote wouldn't play, screen would go black, display would freeze etc. At the same time, the same presentation would work fine on the same machine, with QT 7.3 and Perian 1.0 installed, in iWork 06-Keynote. (Which makes it clear that QT 7.3 is not the culprit.)

The solution is simple: in Keynote 08 go to "Preferences", select the "Presentation" tab and turn ON the option "Allow Expose, Dashboard and others to use the screen"

After turning this option, everything is running fine again! However, it is strange enough, that this option must be turned on at all for making qt movies inside a presentation work again.

I can confirm that removing Perian fixes this issue:

1 - First I disabled Perian using the Perian control panel.
2 - Next I removed the Perian Preference Panel from /Library/PreferencePanes.
3 - Then I repaired my disk permisions (just for good measure).
4 - Last I restarted my MacBook & suddenly my Keynote videos worked again!

I didn't have to reinstall Quicktime or do anything else.

Same problem here.
Config: Macbook, Tiger 10.4.11, Keynote 4.0.1, Quicktime 7.3.0, Perian 1.0
Solution: uninstall Perian 😟
As I understand, Apple should fix this, right? I don't like the solution of "letting expose and other apps access the screen", since I could mess up with Expose while presenting, and I don't want to disable it manually every time I have to give a talk...
So I just tried uninstalling Perian as suggested, and it worked for me. I just clicked on "Uninstall" from the control panel. No reinstalls.
