D-Link DWL-122 USB Wireless Adapter

I have a D-Link USB Wireless adapter DWL-122 that continually 'freezes' the GUI and requires a hard reboot. I only seem to get about 2 to 5 mins worth of web browsing before this happens in either Safari or IE.

This has problem has existed for a while and can be replicated both on a B&W G3 and a Dual USB iBook and happens when connecting to Airport Extreme BAse Station, Airport Card, US Robotics 8045G Wireless Acess Point.

This also has happened under 10.2.7, 10.2.8, 10.3 and 10.3.1.

I have contacted D-Link who sent me another unit with the same problem. They also emailed me new drivers 1.3.2 (have been using 1.3.1) with no sucess.

Does anyone else have the same problem or any solution to get this device to work?

So far on my Aunt's old iMac, the DWL-122 seems mostly OK. I told her to use it quite a bit and see if anything goes wrong over the next week.

Config:

Apple Bondi Blue iMac 233 Mhz
330 MB RAM
Mac OS Panther 10.3.3
D-Link DWL-122 with the 1.3.2 driver
and Linksys BEFSW114 Wireless Router with WEP enabled

The only problem I have had with it is that it is NOT recognized at start up. It needs to be unplugged and plugged back in for it to show up, and then all seems fine. A real inconvenience. Once plugged back in all is well again.

I'd like to get a hold of that newer driver, but I haven't had any luck finding it.

If anything else doesn't work, I think it will go back and I will look into the wireless ethernet bridge by Linksys. More money, but if it just works, it'll be worth it.

I gave up on DWL-122 and bought Belkin's F5F6050 USB unit.

Belkin has a OSX driver for it on their website, even though the current box doesn't say OS X is support. I emailed Belkin tech support before buying it and they verified it works on OS X.

It took a couple in and out of USB ports to get the driver to find the device. After that we've been up and running for over 6 weeks without any problems.

Get Belkin it works!

For anyone that happens to come by this discussion looking for an external wireless adapter for their Mac - I suggest they follow the advice in the second message in this discussion (posted by Duane). Ethernet-interface wireless network adapters do not require drivers and do not require Mac-compatibility, so they will always work with any Mac and MacOS version past, present, and future. USB-interface wireless adapters are best avoided unless absolutely necessary. The only situation I can think of where they are absolutely necessary is for non-Airport-ready iMac owners with a defective ethernet port who want to avoid the expense of getting their iMac's logic board replaced, and already have an existing wireless network.

I was just about to get my ibook 12'' G4 online via w-lan, saw the prices of airport extreme (and the incompatibility with other macs or pcs) and decided to buy an usb-w-lan-stick.
You mentioned good experiences with belkin - is there an usb-w-lan-adapter from belkin? couldnt find any.

is there ANY USB-W-LAN-device somebody can recommend? airport extreme ist just too expensive and too incompatible.

thanks!

I am using a D-Link DI-624 wireless Router that replaced a UGate
3200 router. On my Powerbook G4 867 I installed DWL-650 cardbus
card. The key to getting the card to work was using the Wireless Driver
for Mac v3.0 from OrangeWare Software Design.
http://www.orangeware.com/endusers/wirelessformac.html

The software is compatible with Atheros 5002 series cardbus cards.
Cost is 15.00 dollars. My total setup after rebates is 105.00 dollars
including the software. Best Buy had the stuff on sale last week.

The card, router and software is super g enabled.
Which translates to 108 Mbps.

Benchmarked with a speed test I was able to get a 1181 kbps download speed on a ADSL line from Ameritech. My speed rating from Ameritech is
1536 kpps and getting 1181 kpps wirelessly is outstanding to me.

Speed test at http://www.dslreports.com/stest

I am to connect to the network of 5 other Mac's and print without any problems. I have been using DSL since 1999 and have always viewed
wired ethernet as being a superior networking solution.

The world of wireless got my attension with 108 Mbps and this Powerbook
is as functional with this setup as with the wired switch. I have not used the
WEP options and more than likely will not use it.

Hello Andrew,

I´ve been using the 1.4.5 driver quite successfully.

After upgrading my iMac's disk and re-installing the system I noticed, that it was not possible to set up the connection without first connecting directrly to ethernet.

After that it worked like earlier.

Also I have noticed that when using a PPPoE connection it's useful to uncheck the normal internal modem connection. If you dont do that at least with me it's messing together with the wireless PPPoE connection resulting in "cannot find PPPoE server".

I'm using DWL-122 together with DWL 700 AP Access Point.

So far I have not been disappointed with my wireless solution. I've also been wondering how come there has been so many problems with the unit. In my case it even worked with the earlier drivers that you can download from dlinks support site http://support.dlink.com/

The reason for going wireless with my iMac was to avoid extra cabling around my home. Now I can choose freely in which room to put my iMac.

Hi, where did you get the 1.4.5 driver for the DWL-122? I just got mine and it's 1.3.2... it froze the first I quit Safari... I had to do a hard reboot... hope it will work otherwise I'll just get a airport card... I thought I found an easy way to share a wireless device for internet... without having to unplug the airport card all the time for my two laptops...
