D-Link DWL-122 USB Wireless Adapter

I have a D-Link USB Wireless adapter DWL-122 that continually 'freezes' the GUI and requires a hard reboot. I only seem to get about 2 to 5 mins worth of web browsing before this happens in either Safari or IE.

This has problem has existed for a while and can be replicated both on a B&W G3 and a Dual USB iBook and happens when connecting to Airport Extreme BAse Station, Airport Card, US Robotics 8045G Wireless Acess Point.

This also has happened under 10.2.7, 10.2.8, 10.3 and 10.3.1.

I have contacted D-Link who sent me another unit with the same problem. They also emailed me new drivers 1.3.2 (have been using 1.3.1) with no sucess.

Does anyone else have the same problem or any solution to get this device to work?

I have 4 macs on my home network ... 2 with airport cards and a graphite base station plus 2 B&W units outfitted with two DWL-122 and the latest 1.4.7 drivers i download from a singapore site.

All work great!

and i can now use ichatav2.1 on both B&W's as well as the G4 tower and my laptop!

no problems on my end on 2 B&W's with two DWL-122 using OX.3.7 with the above drivers from singapore using ichatav2.1 in which i have maintained a 3 hr + connection on my own local network (using airport graphite base station).

also connects well to G4 Tower and pismo laptop which both have stock airport cards from apple.

the only bug i have noticed is if one disconects this device while in use on one of the B&W towers it immediately sends it into a kernel panic. mult. user accounts is also problematic whereas standard airport cards work fine.

With regards to the new drivers - does one just install over the existing drivers? ...... NO! run the uninstall first for the older drivers then install the latest version second.

Should the adaptor be unplugged when installing? correct .... up until you get to the system pref's pane in which u will need to activate 10 digit WEP while the adaptor is connected.

my primary objective with this device was to get it working on both B&W towers with ichatav2.1 and OSX.3.7

which i was able to do effectively with the DWL-122, OSX.3, and the signapore drivers. IT DOES WORK. (maybe not as well nor as fast as a stock appple airport card but for $19.99 ...... i'm not complaining!).

Mine works fine with both IE and Safari as well as other apps. Does it hang sometimes on pages ..... yes. Especially when attempting to mult task or when engaging fast user switching. But you know what ...... i can live with this.

In my case the prblem is that it is my step daughter's iBook that she is using at her father's house with a D-Link device provided by his cable internet provider - so while an Airport card would most likely solve the problem it would also cost more that D-Link and or Apple fixing a device which claims right ont he box that it is compatible with Mac OS X - anything that causes the system to hang every 10 minutes is not "compatible"

A inexpensive device that causes problems and hardly works is not a solution.

It is the responsibility of D-Link to make sure their device works not Apple's.

I agree that from a technical perspective a faulty inexpensive device is not better than a more expensive functional device - in this case the D-Link cost is $0 and the airport card is at least $60 depending on source.

Yes I agree that it is the repsonsiblity of a third party vendor to test their equipment and repair issues - but I do not have enough technical detail to know at this point whether the issue is a D-link issue or an Apple issue - and I do not know how much the two companies might have to work together - and I also understand that posts in this form is not going to help either company fix any issues that they might have. It is useful still to have this type of discussion here so that other users can contribute and possibly offer solutions or at least become aware that others have issues and to report them.

It is not a good technical solution to say anytime a third party product fails to perform flawlessly that it should automatically be repalced by an apple branded item.

I agree with this statement. However when the majority of people using this device report that they are constantly fighting with the device to make it operate, it is time to recommend against it.

did u uninstall the older drivers first by using the uninstall on the download? or did u simply load the new drivers over your existing drivers? (The latter produces the exact results you described above).

In any case, sorry to hear it didn't pan out on your system but it is still working very well on two of my macs (B&W) and i love it!

Thanx D-Link!!

Great little device which i highly recommend on a G3 B&W for connecting to an existing airport base station via 802.11b
