D-Link DWL-122 USB Wireless Adapter

I have a D-Link USB Wireless adapter DWL-122 that continually 'freezes' the GUI and requires a hard reboot. I only seem to get about 2 to 5 mins worth of web browsing before this happens in either Safari or IE.

This has problem has existed for a while and can be replicated both on a B&W G3 and a Dual USB iBook and happens when connecting to Airport Extreme BAse Station, Airport Card, US Robotics 8045G Wireless Acess Point.

This also has happened under 10.2.7, 10.2.8, 10.3 and 10.3.1.

I have contacted D-Link who sent me another unit with the same problem. They also emailed me new drivers 1.3.2 (have been using 1.3.1) with no sucess.

Does anyone else have the same problem or any solution to get this device to work?

I, too, have a DWL-122 USB wireless adapter, and I use it with a D-link access point. I have used it without incidence on my white dual-usb iBook, a B&W G3, and a mirrored-door dual G4--EXCEPT that I can't send anything the other direction, i.e., I can browse, pull something from FTP, etc., but when I try to upload, the app hangs. If I post something through the browser, the app hangs. If I try to connect to a file server (requires two-way communication between clients), the Finder hangs.

I have no firewalls running on either the access point or my computer, the symptoms occur with WEP and without. Why is this happening? We're supposed to be able to upload with wireless, right? I've liked using the D-link equipment, but that one problem drives me nuts.

Considering that this happens on every model of Mac I've tried it on, there is either a system problem that is keeping communications from going outbound from the computer while wireless, a driver problem, or the hardware itself just won't do it. Has anyone else had this problem and been able to solve it? I'm going to install the new drivers I saw posted here to see if that will help, but I'm doubting it will.

This is consistent with my experience with the D-Link since about the first month - it worked very well then; I was able to move a fair amount of data between the iMac that uses it and an iBook that is connected via Cat 5. But soon afterward, any attempts to move a file back or forth causes the network connection to "break". WEP on, WEP off, it doesn't matter. It gets weirder - I can browse the iMac's internal website, and pull up text files and view them, but I can't DOWNLOAD the same files from that internal website. Go figure!

I'm also going to try the updated driver on their singapore site: http://www.dlink.com.sg/products/support.asp?pid=175#drivers and see if that helps.

Essentially the web connection is good enough for my young son, the primary user. He can print to our home print server, browse the net and run Flash games from it. The connection doesn't break that often if he just does that. If I could now figure out why Safari causes the system to freeze once in a while.....

Cheers

Keith.

It would appear that the newest driver for this hardware has fixed my problem. I first tried 1.3.2 which seemed to help a bit, then soon after my original problem reappeared. I then updated to the newest driver via that link that was posted. Everything is now working perfectly. I highly suggest that everyone using the DWL-122 upgrade their driver. There are some cosmetic problems with the icon in the system prefs app, but other than that, this driver really works.

I was having problems with mine disconnecting. I spent 4 different phone calls with D-Link and was finally told it was not D-Links responsibility to troubleshoot. The guy kept quoting what you do in Windows. He finally told me to call Apple. it was the OS.

I got on this thread, and it solved all of my problems. I called D-Link back, informed them of this problem and that guys problem. They were glad to know it was not on their U.S. website.

I appreciate you letting us know as well.

Well thank goodness I came accross this message board, as I thought I was going to loose my mind trying to figure out how to get that darn DWL-122 to work with my Airport Express. I too would get bumped off the internet (especially if I was running streaming radio through I-Tunes or using Quicktime) or my computer would freeze up and I would have to hard start it.
I just downloaded the new driver onto the e-mac I am trying to network and that seems to have solved the problems I was having. The only trouble is I have to turn off any encryption. When WEP is turned on, the computer with the d-link cannot read the signal. But other than that it is working just fine. Thanks to all who posted on this subject.

Well, this updated driver certainly improved matters but by no means solved all the problems I've had with this adapter. Problems solved:
1. Computer no longer hangs when browsing; this was a real pain before.
2. Link is now far more stable. Earlier versions of the driver would regularly drop the IP address issued by my router after a few minutes 'on air'.
NOT solved
1. Still get Kernal panics when disconnecting adapter (admittedly no longer a certainty).
2. Still doesn't like sending data. SlimServer, for example, will work for maybe 10-20m then all data transmission stops abruptly; only a reboot fixes this.
3. Doesn't work with Remote Access for some obscure reason.

So, all in all a vast improvement, but certainly no substitute for a proper Airport card (if only I could afford one now that they are as scarce as a snowball in ****).

I have been using a DWL-122 USB Adapter with a G3 iBook and it was giving me fits in the same way many others have described. I eventually realized, however, that it is problem-free as long as the power cord is plugged in but worthless when run off the battery. I asked D-link if they had a fix for this and they referred me to Apple, so here I am. Does anyone know if a newer, more powerful battery would fix this problem?
