Mac Mini CD drive not accepting any cd/dvd

+I also cannot find any email address for apple support. This mac is currently under apple protection plan but I don't want to use that unless its really broken.+

Apple support is typically over the telephone, or face-to-face at the dealer.

This forum provides user-to-user support. I'm not aware of any Apple email-based support.

Regarding the CD drive: it is important to insert the CD perfectly level. Otherwise it can catch on the inside of the drive.

Do you have reason to believe that there already is a disc in the drive -- other than that you can't insert a disc?

This just happened to me this past weekend when I installed Leopard. My drive was working just fine, and then I wanted to install Windows via Bootcamp and now my CD/DVD drive will not accept anything. I am positive that in my situation there is NOT another CD or DVD in the drive.

Any suggestions? What about the holding the power button while plugging it in trick?

What trick is that exactly?! That's a part of the PMU reset procedure which applies to G4 minis, but can cause Intel minis to run the fan up to full speed constantly if done to them.

If it's the PMU reset procedure and you have a G4 mini, it is done thusly:
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
-Wait 10 seconds.
-Plug in the power cord while simultaneously pressing and holding the power button on the back of the computer.
-Let go of the power button.
-Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.

Alternatively, if it's an Intel mini you would want the SMC reset procedure - the proper way to do it is:
-From the Apple menu, choose Shut Down (or if the computer is not responding, hold the power button until it turns off).
-Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord and any display cables.
-Wait at least 15 seconds.
-Plug the power cord back in, making sure the power button is not being pressed at the time.
-Then reconnect your keyboard and mouse to the computer.
-Press the power button on the back to start up your computer.

Same exact thing happened to me this weekend. I bought my machine with Tiger pre-installed, but it came with a Leopard disk. So first thing I did on the new computer was install Leopard (from a disk obviously). Then I went to install some other software from a disk and the machine just kept spitting out the disk. What gives? It can't be a hardware problem. I bought the computer 4 DAYS AGO!

It would be helpful to post the type of drive you have, goto Apple menu and check "about this mac" and then "more info" then "disc burning"... There you will see the model number and the firmware.

The person who first posted this question had a Matshita UJ-845 firmware: D8PB DVD-R by Panasonic... As do I. I have also had cases where I put in media and it seems to not appear on the desktop. I have been testing various CDr and DVDr media and posted an extensive amount of info on this post in the iMac G5 discussion (even though my drive is in a MacMini)My post discusses the attitude of this drive and goes to good lengths to point to some useful resources online help you solve problems with this drive. I am finding out it that the drive is picky about what media it uses, avoiding and spitting out many a disc... Read my post here:

FOR Technical support on this drive if Apple is impossible, I found an email on the makers site, Panasonic Industrial that list an email to contact, it states that USA customers can seek support through them... Let's see if they send me a reply, i'll follow-up if they do...

Finally, two things...I have been reading the iMac G5 discussion that there is another Matshita UJ-846 out there that has been a lot of trouble too, incase you are curious, secondly I had a weird issue with my MacMini telling me that my PAL format discs are NTSC. I wonder if this is an issue with this drive?? If you know of anything in this regard please post to my thread here:

My Mac mini (about 6 months old) has also gotten itself into a state where it will not accept any CD/DVD. I looked in the About This Mac menu and it says the disk type is:

Could you clarify whether you problem is like the original poster's (can't physically insert the CD in the drive) or like some of the other posters who have joined this thread with a different issue, namely having problems with inserted media being spit out?

You can definitely try resetting the SMC (if you have an Intel Mini).

As described on the Apple web site:

If this does not clear things up, and you have an Apple store nearby, and you are still under warranty, I would have them take a look at it.

I am having the same problem. Anyone have any answers? Any CD will not load. The drive sounds as if it is trying to figure out what to do with it and then spits out the CD.

I am having a similar problem. The computer's disc drive won't accept any disc. I can't even put it in the drive. It's like it's blocked. There is no disc already in the drive. I was trying to put a CD in it, but it started to load wrong and I pulled it out. Now I can't load a disc into it. Restarting it didn't help, nor did shutting it off, unhooking everything from it, waiting 10 seconds, plugging the power back into it while holding the power button on the back, then restarting the computer. This is an older Mini, purchased in Japan.

This extremely frustrating issue happened to me on my 1st gen G4 Mac mini as soon as I installed Leopard. I had a perfectly working Mac for neigh on three years-- then Leopard comes along and breaks it. I'd posted previously on this topic but received no useful answers, so I simply went back to Tiger.

The kick in the face is that the DVD drive still spits my discs back at me. Is this is 10.4.10+ issue (highest prior to Leopard debacle was 10.4.9 and everything worked)?

This is getting rather ridiculous. For the most part, it's only video DVDs that will not work. And they're not random imports or self burns; what prompted me to come back to the support forum was Toy Story not mounting after six inserts.

Anyone have any idea what the **** is going on?

i am having a similar problem. i just got a mac mini today and was able to insert a dvd, but it would not play. system profiler states that no drive is present. now i cannot remove the disc, as the eject button does not function. any ideas?

I have the same drive in one of my minis (and the CW-8123 in the other) and both worked perfectly in 10.4.9, 10.4.10, and after that, in 10.5 and 10.5.1.

While I certainly understand the frustration, I don't think that's good advice at all. I suspect that since there are relatively few reports of this or similar issues with optical drives, the problem isn't so much in MacOS versions and compatibility as it is in specific issues within individual systems. I'm at a loss to know exactly what the problem may be since I can't replicate it on my systems, but I don't think such a broad characterization of the fault is all that helpful in understanding it!

i bought if 4 days ago, brand new. however, i think it is an older model. the new minis don't have the superdrive w/ the 1.83 processors.

i just did the intel reset mentioned earlier in this thread and was able to get the system profiler to recognize the dvd drive. i inserted a dvd movie, one that i burned. it was ejected. i then inserted a dvd that i had purchased and it started to play, but shut down about 30 seconds into the movie. i could not eject the dvd and system profiler no longer recognizes the drive. ??????
