I get this incredibly annoying, semi-subtle single pop sound every now and then. At times, it happens a few times a minute. Other times it won't happen for up to ten minutes. It happens even with all programs off, and with the sound on or off (and no, it isn't from pressing the volume buttons). It likes to make the popping sound the second before it goes into sleep mode. I'm thinking it's either from the hard drive caching or trying to park, or maybe something with the power supply inside. I don't see anyone else experiencing this, which is odd because I had just returned a regular MacBook before buying my MBP and the MacBook had the same exact issue.
I have the exact same problem on my two days old MacBook Pro (2008 model, 2.5 GHz, 4 GB RAM, 15" matte screen with an Hitatchi 200 GB 7200 RPM drive (custom order)).
The sound is really, really, REALLY not to live with. I'm going insane. My old (first generation) MacBook Pro (Core Duo) did not have this. It
did have the issue of "high-pitch whine" when the power cable was not connected (which was linked to my someone in this thread already) and is one of the reasons why I upgraded.
I have not tried that 3rd party program yet, but I sure as **** can't live with this like it is now.
Update: the 3rd party method listed above in this thread worked for me. But -- should I still contact Apple? My machine is only three days old, and if this is going to develop into a problem, I really prefer having flagged it to Apple Support.
Also: JeepersCreepers -- I have the same thing. You shouldn't describe it like that though, because you make it sound like traditional "signal-source-connected-to-amp-click" which it is not. I did not have this problem on my old Macbook Pro, but I do have it now. It's not only when I connect the headset/speakers -- the headset can stay connected, but if I do not use an audio application (like Quicktime) for a while, the humming/buzz disappears. When I start playing a tune through iTunes or Quicktime, I can hear a small "click!" and the humming/buzzing starts a few milliseconds before the music begins.
i hope apple is even aware of this problem, it seems to be taking very long to release a fix for this issue, when clearly it is an issue that is affecting all mbp owners!
Made an appointment with the genius bar for tues. Still wondering if anyone does not have this problem (clicking/clunking) noise on their mbp? Also, those that did take their mbp to the genius bar did they resolve this issue? I would hate to go through the hassle of leaving my computer for a few days when more than likely they will not resolve the issue.
The reason I am asking is that I encountered the same problem. It started a few weeks ago I have had the clicking/pong noise coming from the left side of my MBP. Went to the genius bar, was told that the HD checked ok and that everything was just fine. Few days later I started to experience some screen freezing issues and within 2 days the HD failed (still could hear the clicking noise)....
This is where it becomes interesting:
Went back to the Store, talked to the genius, he took some notes and confirm that the MBP would not boot, also took note of the clicking noise also took note of the fact that I was a Procare member. I was told that someone would look at it and that I would be contacted.
That afternoon a tech from the store called me and told me that the HD was ok but I had to do a "Archive & Install" from the Leopard disk (he suspected some file corruption). I asked about the clicking noise: "what clicking noise" he asked.... I explained: "sorry but it is kind of noisy up here I'll check again and call you back"....
10 minutes later: Yep! it's definitively making some abnormal noise, we think the HD is going bad...
Took the MBP for repair, it was suppose to be done in the store (Procare member), then another snafu they sent it to TX for repair.....
This took place last Tuesday.... Still waiting to get my MBP back....
So, if you go to the store, make sure they know about the clicking noise as well as any other issue you might have. If they keep you MBP for testing, I would recommend a follow up on your part. You want to make sure that whom ever is working/testing your machine is aware of the all the facts (they don't seem to read all the info the genius records on the troubleshoot sheet).
And finally if you are a procare member, insist to have the MBP repaired at the store. It takes about 1 hour for the repair and maybe another hour to test. If you let them send it for repair it's going to take a week.
Hope this help and that you'll have more luck with your store than I did..
before i asked for my money back on my 3rd MBP i had not noticed a frozen screen but my MBP repeatedly took longer than normal coming out of sleep mode. As for the possibility of MBP being out on the market WITHOUT this noise. Totally probable otherwise there would be more up in arms over this annoying noise. Bottom line, however, this is unacceptable and APPLE should be doing something about it. I will not venture to buy another MBP for a great while. The powerbook still rules.
Please let me know the results of their fix when you get the computer back. I am going to hold off in taking it to them until I hear of someone who actually had the problem fixed for good. I took it to them once about 6 months ago regarding this issue and they claimed it was normal. I just can't stand the sound and feel that since I have yet to run across someone who has had this problem fixed or whose mbp did not come with this issue its not worth wasting the time and losing my computer for a few days, when the result will most likely be "everything is ok" from the genius!
I've been having the exact same problem, but I can hear it through my external speakers also. It's really, really annoying considering I just bought this machine about a week ago. No one who's gone in for a replacement has had any sort of luck either.
MAXL221,
Read the posts.
In the course of 10 days I went through three (3) brand new out-of-the-box MBP's.
My #1 MBP had the obnoxious blip noise. I returned it a few days later for a new one.
My #2 MBP had >NO blips<, and TRUST ME I was listening closely for them.
Unfortunately #2 had a dead key on it and I was told the latest versions of MBP's take several weeks for replacement parts to become available so I swapped it for yet a third and...
My #3 MBP... had the blip noise all over again.
I have no idea if the quite #TWO machine (NOT making the blip/pong noise) would have eventually started making noise as has been reported by some people here. I kept it for a few days (hoping the sticky key would correct) and the pop-noise was never there.
Looks like the majority of the MBP's for the last several months have suffered this problem with the occasional odd machine being the (out of the box) exception.
RETURN YOUR MALFUNCTIONING MPB'S, GET REFUNDS, know that these laptops have a glitch that a lot of people simply don't notice because of ambient/room noise. They are not supposed to run with this distracting noise on them.
I brought my first MBP 2.2 SR back last week b/c of the metallic "plink" and they gave me a new one since I also had an "A" key that would intermittently not work (I think that was the reason they exchanged it not because of the noise). Anyway, my new one also makes the noise!! I have to say its not as often as the old one and so I'm considering living with it since odds are that if I exchanged it I would have the noise or some other issue to contend with and I'm tired of dealing w/ all of these problems. Maybe I'm going soft. I'm also hesitant to install the fix that people note above for fear that any sudden movement might ruin the drive.
For those of you that are trying to get your MBP replaced, why haven't you tried the Hdapm program?
1. Don't know about it?
2. Concerned about the effects.
3. Did, but didn't work.
I have tried it and works about half the time. Sometimes is reports successful, other times it states "Failed: APM not supported." Any one else care to give there findings? Thanks!
