iPod touch restore error 1604

My iPod touch has been working well for some weeks. When I tried to connect it to my PowerBook yesterday it downloaded a new version of iTunes. Since then it is in restore mode and has an "unknown error 1604". This continues after re-installing iTunes on my Powerbook. Who can help?

PowerBook G4, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Here's the cure all.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306640

This page solves it all. GOODBYE ERROR 1604

Before you go to do you restore delete all the files out of the

C:/Documents and Settings/whatever your user name is/Application Data/Apple Computer/iTunes

Application Data folder may be hidden. Just go to "Tools", "Folder Options", "View" and you'll see a circle to be filled in about the hidden files.

Exactly this same problem has occured to me. Sunday evening 17 Nov 2007, when I connected my touch, iTunes proposed to update to 1.1.2. I clicked ok. While the update was downloading iTunes then proposed a new version of iTunes. I clicked ok to this also. The Touch software downloaded and began installation. During the installation, the installer crashed, adn iTunes froze! Now when I try to reinitialise, I get an unkown error 1604 (after about 10 minutes).

I bought this iPod Touch in texas 2 weeks ago, and was in France when I downloaded the update. Is it possible that apple is so malicious as to kill iPods if you cross a border?

I have no idea if this is the case, but I hope NOT! This is my fourth i-pod I have been buying/using and I hjave never heard about any protection for different geographical zones. I understand that there is some kind of protection for the Apple i-phone, but I would not understand this for the i-pod touch ... Hope somebody knows more about this topic and the "1604 error".

Hmm, I'd try the following.

1) Restart your system (iPod unplugged)
2) With the iPod on the menu, hold down both the power button and the home button at the same time.
3) Continue holding those buttons until the screen goes black.
4) Once the screen is black continue holding down the home button.
5) Doing steps 2 through 4 should put the iPod back into the connect to iTunes screen.
6) Attempt to restore the iPod again.

Let me know how it goes.

Thanks, but I have tried that quite a few times now, and the restore always fails.
Sometimes with a 1604 error, sometimes with another.

My most recent strategy is to recover 1.1.1. Unfortunately, each version of the Touch 1.1.1 software that I recover unpacks to a folder rather than the nifty iTunes update cube that I see for 1.1.2 in my ~/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates folder.

Any suggestions for how to modify the folder so that iTunes will recognize it as software for my Touch?

Thanks, but I don't do windows. 🙂

What I have done is delete the file iPod1,1 1.1.2_3B48bRestore.ipsw from ~/Library/iTunes/Software Update/ and reload it (3 times now - I am persistent).

I also recovered two different versions of iPod1,1 1.1.1_3A110aRestore.ipsw, but it unpacks to a folder, and I can not get it to change Kind into "iPod Software Update File".

Note I have been doing this on a older Power PC machine running 10.4.11 (I have a lot of expensive legacy software in Classic). Next step is to try this with a newer Mac G4 dual core.

Anyone have any other ideas?

Well, I got the solution for you.
all you need do is follow the steps stipulated below without growing a brain and you will have your touch functioning right again.

For PC users
1 run cmd to get your DOS operating system
2 type " cd windows "
3 type cd program files
4 type cd itunes
5 type dir
6 look for itunes update file and delte it
or just type
7 del itunes update*.dll
8 run itunes then plug in your ipod touch and try to restore with that ***** file deleted
your ipod touch is gonna be restored.
just get back to me if all goes fine or wrong.
i had same problem and my touch is functioning right now.

Thanks for the tip. I tried to reconnect after holding/pressing the buttons. The real problem is a later stage when already connected to iTunes and in the RECOVERY mode. The "unknown error 1604" pops up while the iPod touch is trying to recover so I do not get anywhere. Can anybody help?

Are you running on one of the new dual-core intel Powerbooks, or on an older PowerPC model. As I said above, all my machines are PowePC. My salvation came when I did the reinit while connected to a newer dual core model running 10.5.1.

I am curious, because I don't want to have to start over when the next system release (1.1.3) comes out.

In any case - good luck.

I had more or less the same problem with you guys and have been trying to hard resore it again and again and again XPPPPPPPPPPPPP.
Out of surprise, this can be solved(not sure if it applies to you though) by charging your ipod touch using a power adapter, not your USB cable.

I had the same issue with error 1604 and was able to restore using an iMac 20" (Mid 2007) Aluminum running OS 10.5.1 and iTunes 7.5. Previously, could not restore using an iMac G5 ALS 20" on OS 10.4.11 and iTunes 7.5. iPod Touch is now running firmware update 1.1.2. I'm not sure if the OS or the processor type made the difference. I hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip. This will probably my next step: I just got a new iPod Touch in exchange to the one with the 1604 restore error. I connected it to my PowerBook and it charged all my music and everything. Then I hit the update button to migrate software to 1.1.2 and then ... the same as before: restore mode leading to error 1604. Here I am with the same problem and a new iPod. I will try to restore at another computer and we will see from there: so far PROBLEM STILL NOT SOLVED!!

Apparently there is a compatibility issue between Mac OS X (10.4.11) and the 1.1.2 download. Here is the solution: restore your iPod touch with another computer (for example with a Windows PC) so that 1.1.2. will be charged on the iPod Touch. Afterwards re-connect to your Mac and syncronize with your i-Tunes library. It worked for me! SOLVED !!!

I remain in ipod Touch purgatory and I'm about to give up. I'm running on Windows XP and am getting the lovely 1604 error with my new 8MB Touch locked up in recovery mode (USB/Itunes icon). Took the Touch to the Apple store and had the update done via a Mac with no problem - the associate even tested it on a Windows OS to make sure songs could be copied over. "Great," I think. I take the Touch home and hook it up and iTunes refuses to recognize my touch among the sources.

I've tried:
- turning Touch on and off
- rebooting Touch via sleep/hold buttons until Apple icon appears
- restarting windows with touch hooked up
- uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes
- going to an earlier version of iTunes

Now I'm stuck in recovery mode again and getting the 1604 error. I'll take it to another PC but I know I'm still going to have no synch with iTunes once I hook up to my own PC.
