iPod touch restore error 1604

My iPod touch has been working well for some weeks. When I tried to connect it to my PowerBook yesterday it downloaded a new version of iTunes. Since then it is in restore mode and has an "unknown error 1604". This continues after re-installing iTunes on my Powerbook. Who can help?

PowerBook G4, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Update on my issue. Took my Touch to the Apple store for the second time and got it out of recovery mode (usb/itunes icon) by hooking it up to a Mac. Unfortunately neither my PC or iTunes recognize my Touch exists afterward - which was expected. I've tried the 5 R's and all my USB ports. What's strange is my PC will make the 'ding' sound that usually means it recognizes you've plugged in a new device but when you look at 'My Computer' the Touch isn't listed. No problems with my old nano, though. My computer and iTunes picks it up like a charm. No clue why my Touch is different. If anyone has any ideas.....PLEASE !

Hi I had the same 1604 error and posted in october just 2weeks after buying it all efforts to restore failed and Apple replaced it my Mac now has the latest Tiger updates etc and so far the Touch has worked Ok except for trying to register every time it connected to the Mac I followed other posts and registered with Apple direct and checked never register next time I connected to the Mac and so far so good.PS when it failed I also tried conncting to a Pc and that failed to restore it so I don`t really think the problem is with the Mac.

I m still stuck with this error 1604. I tried numerous times on my laptop and my brother's desktop, and it never worked, even after i tried created several user accounts. This su(ks! I alost give up. The last option is taking it to an apple store, but here in canada, they are only located in Toronto. ****! What can i do! call the apple support? Send it back to repair?

Darn! I ll go visit Toronto! ----I hate streetcars there! Pain....Oh so much pain!

When will 1.1.3 come out?

Do this:

1: Clean out the apple folder as the user above explains
2: download this http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPod/SBML/osx/bun dles/061-4036.20071107.9g3DF/iPod1,11.1.2_3B48bRestore.ipsw
3: open up iTunes and plugin your ipod
4: press SHIFT + Restore
5: browse to the file you just downloaded
6: Wait

If all fails, try restoring the usual way on several computers till you find one that dose it.

I tried all the methods like clearing up the files. I am using windows Vista. Apparently, after deleting the files, when I start up itunes, vista will re-install itunes before starting up.

Any vista users care to shed some light?

My Ipod touch was working perfectly fine even after the 1.1.2 version upgrade, it started to screw up after itunes updated to 7.5. Keep getting pop ups that ipod is unable to sync, operation time out etc.

I tried restoring ipod more than 10 times I believe. Very fustrating!

Ok Great I was able to restore my Ipod Touch.

But now I lost the Wifi, the Ipod tell me that Wifi is not available on my Ipod! I try to get a network and I can't get in general settings in the wifi tab. One of you got the same ?

From my point of view it's nice toy not too expensive, but still too expensive to get those kind of problems all the time.

Some ca help me with the Wifi ?

1.Close iTunes
2.Plug your IPOD
3.Type devmgmt.msc on Command Prompt (Device Manager)
4.Goto USB Serial Bus Controller and delete Apple Recovery (iBoot) USB Driver
5.Download a older version of update from http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=393427
Plug your iPod Touch
<< Windows should start with New Hardware found>> Message
6.Start iTunes now
It should come back with the ever familiar restore message
Press Shift & Click Restore
Browse to the recovery file *.ipsw

You should be up and running.
I have used these steps no less than 20 times now and seems to be working on
Windows XP SP2 machines.

I had the same problem and went through all of the steps to correct including going to the genius bar (which should be renamed to minimally competent bar) and finally called Apple care and spent 1.5 hours on the phone with someone who clearly was putting me on hold to ask someone else. None the less the link below has instructions that actually resolved the problem.

Click on the link above or copy and paste the following address into your Web browser to view the article: <http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1747?viewlocale=en_US>

After this it allowed me to restore and is working for the time being. This isn't a product I would recommend to anyone.

This just worked for me. My daughter plugged up her iTouch to sync an "album" she created, and got a window telling her that her iPod needed to be restored. After clicking on restore, she got the 1604 error. After reading your comments, plus several others, this is what I did:

1) found and deleted the iTunes software update .dll file (under Apple folder)
2) restarted pc (with iPod connected with cable)
3) clicked on the "restore" and it worked

Not sure what really fixed what or contributed to the fix, but I'm thankful for the results. These iTunes issues can really take the fun out of owning these wonderful iPods.

Thank you all for taking the time to post your problems and resolutions.

Happy New Year!
