Uninstall Safari 3 and get Safari 2?

I downloaded 10.4.11 and we all know Safari 3 is having some problems. Dont know when apple plans to fix them but i want to go back to Safari 2? How would i go ahead and do so? Would 10.4.11 still be there? My pages are comming out a little strange with the new Safari 3. thanks!

Please don't speak for "WE" again. Myself and several others are having major problems with Safari 3. We all make our living using the internet and the Leopard upgrade has cost us a lot. I have had to create work arounds around my work arounds to try to keep business running. Between Falsh content going into oblivion to ruby on rails content crashing, we have valuable projects in peril. Speak for yourself next time

Speaking from my experience, I took the chance. After I downloaded Safari 2.0.4, I just dragged Safari 3.0 from the Applications folder to the Trash. I cringed as I deleted it, expecting to lose lots of stuff, but after I dragged Safari 2 into the Apps folder and restarted, it was like I never lost Safari at all. (Of course, Safari Bookmarks are on my Backup list every week, so I figured -- worst case -- I'd just restore them.) I tried a couple of the other remedies offered in this thread and was down to doing something desperate. Good luck.

Hey Thanks!

Your directions worked perfectly. I'm back to Safari 2 and happy. Stable is good. It does what i need it to and that's fine.

I've noticed a lot of similar discussions going on right now in other threads... a lot of them sounded painfully familiar... and a lot of people are choosing to reinstall Quicktime and a bunch of other apps. Think I'll just wait for Safari 4.0

Thanks again.

[If i trash safari 3 and get the older version, will i still have all my current bookmarks, or will it have deleted them? Hope not - got a lot of bookmarks!]

To be on the safe side users>library>safari>bookmarks.plist make a copy for the desktop before you trash Safari 3. You can replace the new bookmarks.plist when you install Safari 2 if your current bookmarks.plist has gone.

You can dowload Safari 2.04 at the following address:
http://michelf.com/projects/multi-safari/

*Just trash 3* and substitute 2.04. Hope this helps.

GREAT ! thank you so much 🙂
I also had the Safari 3 crashing problem (no add-ons or odd InputManager files). I deleted it cause I wanted to go back to version 2 (even if I usually browse with SeaMonkey or FF), but the Apple installer said "you nedd OS 10.4.2" and I have 10.4.11 !

It is absurd that Apple doesn't give a working 2.0.4 to download and a Safari 3 stand-alone release ! there is the windows version, but not the Mac OS one! LOL

I'm having the same problem with Gametracker (It tells me I need Safari 2), but I am not having the other problems with Safari 3 in 10.4.11. I Tried installing Safari 2 in addition to Safari 3, but I told me I needed OS X 10.4.2. When I tried to install 10.4.2, it told me it could not be used on my machine. What gives? Is there any way I can keep Safari 3 and also have Safari 2 with OS 10.4.11?

Hi Yanki01

if I read you right.... you reinstalled Safari 2 from an OSX ( pre 10.4.11 ) install disk (?) So yep, you've got Safari 2.0.x, but unless you did some manual file-swapping, you likely still have the webkit and various other frameworks/files that work behind the scenes from 10.4.11. Simply deleting the Safari app & installing 2.0.x from disk ( or anywhere else ) won't replace the many other files which were also changed by 10.4.11.

The multi-safari link that was mentioned by jpfresno gets round this issue, by including the relevant webkit & other frameworks within it, and makes the multi-safari app use those, rather than the later ones which are installed.

The point being... that if the problems you noted are caused by webkit &/or other system files, then yes, the problems will persist because those later versions are still being used.

The not-very-easy way to get back to 2.0.4 is an archive & reinstall from install disks, followed by the 10.4.10 update & various system/application updates if needed. Attempting to manually replace the many files/frameworks is probably doomed, since other apps than Safari use webkit etc & they would likely have issues looking for things in the old files, which just didn't exist, or were written differently.

Given the positive ( far as I've seen ) feedback on multi-safari, if I were you, I'd try it out, and if it solves your problems, great; use it instead.
