iTunes disabling CD/DVD Drive

I've tried installing iTunes 7.5 on my laptop and it seems to install fine. Once I restart my computer, however, the CD/DVD has an error. Windows thinks its a driver problem but when I run the diagnostic it says all drivers are up to date.

+the registry settings used by the itunes drivers for importning and burning cds and dvds. this can happen as a result of installing other cd buring software. please reinstall itunes+

With that one, try a reboot and repair of iTunes.

Reboot the PC (very important) and then do a repair install of iTunes. In Vista, go "Start > Control Panel", and (if you're in the Control Panel Home view), click "uninstall a program". Select iTunes, and click "Repair".

If no joy there, check for a device filter conflict, as per:

Hey, I have the same problem. I cannot help but think that there is a hardware conflict with Vista that prevents itunes from running with Vista. Delete itunes, fix the registry, and you get your DVD drive back. But then you have no itunes (but I have an iphone that needs itunes). Leave itunes on and fix the registry filters and you get your DVD drive back, but now you have a crippled itunes that cannot see your DVD drive or sync calendars or contacts with the iphone. So I have to choose between itunes and a DVD drive?!? Yes, I have tried reinstalling drivers. I think I'm going to take it back and try to get a different DVD drive installed. Is that possible?

okay so i woke up, opened itunes, and all my music was gone. thats not the problem though. Every time I open it the music is gone. I tried to download the new version of itunes, which i have been doing for awhile now but I always get the same message. it cant delete the old itunes.
User uploaded file

i find the folder and it says the same thing. I tried to delete itunes altogether and it wont delete it because of the same reason.

I have found NOTHING on the web that answers this problem. Toshiba knows about the problem because they have a post on their support site that deals with a "missing DVD drive." Unfortunately, the two solutions they provide do not fix the problem if you want to run i-tunes. You can re-install the driver, and if that doesn't work, you can edit the registry by deleting the upper and lower filters (See toshiba support's link to Microsoft). But then you will have to repair itunes as listed above (which then re-installs the filters in the registry), and the DVD drive is missing or has problems once again. Every time I need the drive, I go through the above process. Then I repair itunes and live without a DVD drive until the next time I need it. Is this mainly a Toshiba Satellite problem?

By the way, according to Microsoft's support site, if the recurs after fixing the registry, then "check with the software vendor to see if there is an update." So they say that Apple is going to have to provide a solution to this conflict with an itunes update. But why aren't more people having this problem?

I finally gave up and did a recovery of the os, using cd's provided with my toshiba. Not a completely clean install like last time. Went ahead and let toshiba install all the junk software. Vista and iTunes are working together so far. Have not been able to isolate what the problem was. Probably a combination of conflicts. I've installed everything but antivirus and all is well(as can be on a very buggy vista). Also have updated windows. We'll see how far I get; I'm wathing closley for the culprit; restarting after every update or install.

Same thing happening to me on two different machines running Vista Ultimate - starting with the versions of iTunes as they approached 7.4 and higher. Removing upper and lower filters sort of works, because you can now sometimes import CDs again, and even burn from time to time, but not reliably. I had hoped that 7.5 would fix the error fist noticed in version 7.4, but no luck.

Maybe 7.6?

I thought about dell, but my dad has had different vista problems.(disappearing USB drives!) Mine is working still after a recovery, and the only thing I haven't reinstalled is antivirus. Vista will point at apple, apple will point at vista, and toshiba will point at both(while making it difficult to upgrade back to xp). I would say try a recovery, and delete mcafee first before installing iTunes.

I have a brand new Dell Inspiron 530 and am experiencing the exact same issues. Installed iTunes this morning, CD/DVD drive won't work. Call Dell, they delete the upper/lower filters somewhere in the registry editor, drive works. Get error message from iTunes to uninstall/reinstall, so I do, and now the **** CD/DVD drive won't work again. Can't figure out exactly what to do with the registry now. Found instructions online, but it seems to have already been done, so I don't know why the drive isn't working now.
