Q: Problems with Roadrunner email setup

Has anyone else had issues with setting up a Roadrunner email account in 10.5? The automatic setup gives me this message:

Trying to log into the SMTP server "smtp-server.neo.rr.com" failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct, then click Continue. If the information isn't correct, you cannot send email."

I have verified that my information is correct, and have even tried to manually set things up. The same exact e-mail address and settings worked fine in 10.4. But, after upgrading to Leopard, the Mail application won't cooperate.

Can anyone please help?

After a day of diddling with this problem and online chat with RoadRunner, I fixed my mail problem by setting authentication for SMTP to "NONE", per one of the posts here.

    Here's what worked for me:

    SMTP server: smtp-server.nc.rr.com (nc=North Carolina)
user id does NOT include "@nc.rr.com"
    port =25
    uncheck SSL
Authentication "NONE" (this is the one that got me)

    POP Server: pop-server.nc.rr.com
    port=110
user id does NOT include "@nc.rr.com"

Online chat at roadrunner.com with HELP personnel was actually useful, though they left out the part about no outbound authentication. Good luck.

I'm using 10.5.4 and I've been having the same problem with my Road Runner e-mail account all weekend. I could receive incoming mail and RSS feeds just fine, but outgoing mail was giving me an SMTP server error every time. I've been playing around with the settings and now have it working, these are the settings I'm using:

Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Account Information

    Incoming Mail Server: pop-server.tampabay.rr.com
User Name: user ID (does not include"@tampabay.rr.com")
    Password: your password

    Outgoing Mail Server: smtp-server.tampabay.rr.com
    Use only this server: checked

If you click on the drop down menu for the smtp server and choose "Edit Server List..." and choose the Advanced tab for these settings:

    Server port: 25
Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): unchecked
    Authetication: None

    Mail > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced

    Port: 110
    Use SSL: unchecked
    Authentication: Password

Hope this helps anyone else having similar problems.

    Hi.

I tried everything you suggested and I still can't send emails. I spoke with both apple tech support and roadrunner tech support and they blame the issue on each other - so no help there. The mail connection doctor shows I have successful connections but it still won't send. Any suggestions...

You made my day! Thank You! About 15 minutes to get connected the first time. Fast as can be now.

I'm having same sort of problem, but worse: Get same message as many others when trying to set up mail account: Trying to log into the SMTP server "smtp-server.neo.rr.com" failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct, then click Continue. If the information isn't correct, you cannot send email."
BUT, it never allows me to access Mail Preferences ... the Preferences selection on the Menu is ALWAYS grayed out ... ALWAYS. I've tried every option imaginable to bring it up, with no success. So, without being able to even access Mail Preferences, I don't see anyway of utilizing ajmac's fix.
    Ideas?

This exactly fixed my problem. I had to quit Apple Mail and restart it before I got it to work. This is the one thing Time Warner didn't have me do. Otherwise the settings Matthew Little mentioned will work.

There is no need to trash your mail prefs which was mentioned above.

Lots of problems setting up roadrunner email account. I've tried most of the suggestions but I'm still having trouble receiving emails. I don't have access to all my emails on my PC (dell) that is connected to roadrunner. However, I do seem to get new emails only when I'm on the macbook in mail?? I can send out new messages from the macbook. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thx.

I suffered from the same problem all I did to resolve this issue was to go to advanced options uncheck the authentication drop down menu save it by clicking on light switch (general) and save changes and it worked like a charm. Thanks for all of your help

ajmac125: Thanks so much for the information........ I tried everything you said and, now, finally I can send and receive my roadrunner mail via Mail 3.5..... I was about to just delete Mail 3.5 and forget about the whole thing until I read your post..........You're awesome! Shouldn't software just work? It's ridiculous that regular people should have to format all this crap on own own. I didn't pay good money to mac to have to do this myself. Ok....anyhow....thanks again; I greatly appreciate it. Later

I had the same issue! Thanks for all of your posts. I was initially set up the incoming server fine but sending mail was a problem. I made the changes that you guys suggested and that did the trick. Thanks again!

Same issue here, and neither Roadrunner nor Apple could help.
Fixed it by selecting Authentication None, Default ports selected, SSL off.
    Works now.

My email was working fine and then suddenly stopped, saying that my server would not work on port 110, I have tried multiple server changes and cannot get my Adelphia (turned Roadrunner) email to send. Does anyone know how to fix this problem and/or give the proper incoming and outgoing networks? Thanks.

Settings for Leopard Mail with Roadrunner.

    Preferences>Account
This is assuming your name, email, password and incoming (pop) mail server are correct.

    Under account information tab set:

Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) to None and uncheck Use only this server.

    Under Advanced:

    set Port to 110
    uncheck Use SSL
    authentication to Password.

    Save settings

    Worked for me...
