Does anyone know how to remove OS9? It takes up space and I never use it.
I would like to uninstall it but I don't know how?!!?!?

HELP!

Thank you,

Alexandra

Hi, Alexandra -

Welcome to Apple's Discussions.

It is not necessary to use a program to remove OS 9. All you need do is drag the OS 9 System Folder ( not the folder named System - that's OSX) to the Trash.

You may get a protest from OSX that the System Folder is in use, and so can not be thrown away. If that happens, then drag the file Finder out of the System Folder and onto the desktop, then trash the System Folder. You may need to restart after removing the file Finder to the desktop.

Once the System Folder has been discarded, you can also throw away the folders Documents and Applications (Mac OS 9) - those are used by OS 9, and not by OSX. Be sure you have removed any files from those that you need.

In some cases there may be an application in the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder that is used by both OSX as well as OS 9 (this is doubtful in your case, especially if you have never used OS 9). You may want to test for that by placing that folder in the Trash, but not emptying the Trash. Then test run your usual programs - if all is okay you can empty the Trash.

Note - removal of OS 9 will also remove any capability to use Classic.

Good luck -

Hi, Alexandra -

I'm not that knowledgeable on OSX nor on eMac's, but 256MB RAM is at the low end for decent performance with newer machines and OSX versions. I'd certainly suggest you increase that - doubling it to 512MB (or even more) should help.

You would probably get better responses re OSX 10.3 here -

and re eMac machines here -

Good luck -

Hi,

I am not a Mac expert, but what I noticed when I removed my OS 9 was that some folders needed to emptyed to the trash first and then it let me to delete the folder, so I am thinking that there might be a "My Dosuments" folders somewhere that contains info about that alias and if you find it then you might be able to get rid of it.

Again, I am not sure that that's the case, but you might want to try.

Let me know if it worked or not, or if you find the way to get rid of it.

Hi, folks! I used the instructions in this thread to uninstall OS 9 but I've got some leftovers that won't go away.
First of all, I did have to remove the Finder from the OS 9 System Folder in order to trash the folder; but now what do I do with the OS 9 Finder that's still sitting on my desktop?
A couple of locked items (JpegView 3.3.1 and Network Assistance Preferences in the OS 9 System Folder Preferences folder) can't be trashed and I don't have the tool to unlock them. Can I assume that stashing them somewhere on my Hard Drive will be safe?
Two OS 9 fonts wouldn't trash so I put them in my OSX fonts file. Is this ok?
I tried to access the Mike Boreham post on how to get rid of the OS 9 icon in my toolbar but the link only brings up an error message saying it's been deleted. Any suggestion? TIA.

Hi, John -

Throw it away.

Don't know if OSX behaves like OS 9 does, but try holding down the Option key when emptying the Trash.

Otherwise, do a Get Info on the item - there should be a checkbox in the Info window which can be unchecked to unlock it.

Two OS 9 fonts wouldn't trash so I put them in my OSX fonts file. Is this ok?

Probably - but you should be able to dispose of them the same way as the preceding.

I tried to access the Mike Boreham post on how to get rid of the OS 9 icon in my toolbar but the link only brings up an error message saying it's been deleted. Any suggestion?

Under the new format for Discussions, old links don't work. However, Search (particularly "more options" ) works better - try searching on his name and an additional word such as toolbar or icon.

Thanks, Don; all your suggestions were on the mark and I've disposed of my leftovers in the Trash.
I did discover on my own a way to get rid of the OS 9 icon in the toolbar which should work for anyone using OS X with a System Preferences menu. Just click on the OS 9 icon near the bottem and then uncheck "Show Classic status in menu bar;" that will delete it.
