CD-ROM does not mount

Hi,
Suddenly on my Powerbook G3 with OS 9.2.2 the CD-ROM does not mount (no icon on desktop).
I've removed and resat several times, with or without power on the system.
The strange thing: When inserting a music-cd (Mozart) a system message saying that this cd is not formatted, and asks if I want to do so!
Any ideas?

Hi Robbin,
Many thanks for a quick reply.
Yes, checking my Extensions folder (Tillegg in Norwegian) reveals that I'm actually missing Apple CD/DVD Access - and I don't have a clue how it is missing. It must have been there some days ago!
I cannot find it on my harddisc - and for my install cd - Catch22...
Searching the Apple MAC OS 9 Support site doesn't display any such file either. How can I get this one???

PS The Powerbook G3 actually belongs to my spouse. I'm basically a pc/xp user....

Hi, Oivind -

The name of the file (in English) is Apple CD/DVD Driver. The version of that which is used by OS 9.2.2 is the same as the one used by OS 9.2.1.

Make sure it didn't accidentally get moved to the Extensions (disabled) folder - you can check in Extensions Manager; if it is listed but unchecked, checkmark it and restart.

You can also use Sherlcok to search for it on the hard drive. Sherlock works with a partial-name search.

If it is actually missing completely -

If you happen to have a copy of the OS 9.2.1 download update on your hard drive, you can extract that file from it. You can use this utility TomeViewer to extract (expand) any files you want from an Installation Tome on an OS Install CD or download disk image, without running the installer.
How to use TomeViewer

If you do not have a copy of the OS 9.2.1 download update on your drive, you can download it from here -
Article #120030 - Mac OS 9.2.1 - Download and Info

The OS 9.2.1 download update is quite large; if you have a copy of an OS 9.2.1 Install CD, you can obtain it from that. The trick, of course, is getting the drive to work well enough to mount and read that CD.

To do that, you can get a copy of the extension in English from this site - http://www.panix.com/~dac/macdgm/ - at the bottom of the page. The English version of the extension should work fine, but will contaminate the langauge of the installed OS as far as future updates go (if any). If you use the English extension, I suggest you do so only until you can replace it with one in Norwegian.

Good luck -

Hey Robbie and Don,
Many thanks for your assistance. In the end it revield that the CD-drive suddenly got out of order. Testing it on a friends Powerbook G3 Wallstreet (same model) my cd-drive doesn't work, but their work on my system.
So now I'm looking for a replacement, old or new (if it can be found).
Thanks for the help anyway.

Actually, not very obvious. I have the problem that I can boot from a system CD and install the OS (9.1) but when I boot from the hard drive the CD will not mount.

Everything was working fine until I decided to give my old Mac to a friend and thought I ought to initialise the hard drive and re-install the OS so that everything would be nice and new for him!

Any thoughts?

Hi, Alf -

Odd. Sounds like there's a comflict in the OS on the hard drive preventing the mounting of CDs.

Make sure the File Exchange control panel is active in Extensions Manager, and that these extensions are present in the Extensions folder -

Apple Audio Extension

Apple CD/DVD Driver

Apple Photo Access

Audio CD Access

Foreign File Access

ISO 9660 File Access

UDF Volume Access

If you have Toast installed, try disabling Toast's CD Reader extension.

There can be a conflict between the extensions Iomega Driver and Apple CD/DVD Driver; although that usually does not cause that problem, you might try disabling the Iomega Driver extension.just to see if it is a contributor.

Good luck -

Hi Alf: plz clarify for a Mac "newbie" who has similar problem. I booted from OS 9 CD & successfully installed 9.2 but there is no desktop icon for either CD or FD. I tried to reboot from CD (holding 'C' key) but it booted from HD not install CD used previously.

All extensions named in Don's post seem to be present in Extension folder. But i am not familiar with 'mount' procedure. Could failure to 'mount' be cause - if so, how do i mount CD & FD so that icons appear on desktop ?

Thanx,
Bob

Hello Bob.

What System were you using before installing 9.2, please?

Did CD/FD stop appearing immediately - the first time you booted in 9.2, or what? Is there even any clicking and whirring when you insert a CD?

If you launch Apple System Profiler from the rainbow Apple Menu, while there is a CD in the drive, does the Devices and Volumes tab show that?
