CD-ROM does not mount

Hi,
Suddenly on my Powerbook G3 with OS 9.2.2 the CD-ROM does not mount (no icon on desktop).
I've removed and resat several times, with or without power on the system.
The strange thing: When inserting a music-cd (Mozart) a system message saying that this cd is not formatted, and asks if I want to do so!
Any ideas?

Thanks Don.
I had already checked my ext folder. I never had Toast on this machine. After carefully deleting everything I could from the ext folder, it finally mounted the OSX software disk. Never did figure out what the problem was. But, I was finally able to install OSX.
Now for the new problem: I've hooked it up to my network at the office. All the other computers (OS9, OSX and PCs) in the office have internet access, but not this one. It sees all the other computers on the network, but not the internet. Safari opens, but won't load anything. I've launched software update, but it can't connect. I've tried pinging my website and it returns 0 packets.
I'm really stumped. Any suggestions?

Hi, AppleFolk! Here's a problem I'm having along this thread, but this one is VERY strange...how strange is it?

I just purchased Panther to install on my G3/350. When I inserted the first disc into my CD-ROM drive, I got that ubiquitous "disc unrecognizable by this computer" message. OK. Deep breath. I inserted the other two discs in the drive; they came up, no problem. I tried a bunch o' my other discs: no problem. So, then I tried inserting it in my burner drive. There it was!! Unfortunately, my burner is on an Adaptec SCSI card, so it's not bootable. I then checked my System Folder; all the relevant extensions are there and File Exchange is OK. Tried shutting off my Toast Reader extension; no help.

Any ideas? I REALLY need help here. I have to get this system updated ASAP, but I can't afford to buy another set of discs. What's a mother to do? TIA for any advice.

Stan

Hi, Stanley. You're a mother? Congratulations! ;o)

Check the CD that won't read very carefully for fingerprints, minute scratches, dirt, etc. Yes, I know it's a new disc, so there shouldn't be anything to find, but you won't know until you look.

Since the disc reads in one drive but not in the other, there is obviously some degree of diffference between the two drives' tolerance for a marginal disc. That could be caused by dirt in the drive that won't read it. Pick up a drive cleaning kit and run it through that drive, then test again.
