Macbook Pro Audio line in stopped working after Leopard install

Anyone know what's up with this? Since I installed Leopard (did an erase and install) my audio line in port isn't working although my built-in microphone is. Ideas? I haven't found a solution so far from my searches.

I have exactly the same problem. I have been on the phone with tech support twice and even given my Macbook Pro to the Apple Store in Sydney to have the relevant part replaced, but no luck. My $50 Plantronics Skype headset has been working fine for the past eight months - but then a week ago, caput! Has anyone made any progress on this? I suspect it's a software issue, but am not sure where to begin ...

Hey, I just got my MacBook Pro about a week ago (the new MacBook pro), and it has the same problem - right out of the box. It's not my headsets (I have 2, and they both work fine on my old PC). I find it very difficult to believe someone from Apple hasn't issued an acknowledgement or come up with a solution for this. It's a pretty big deal, and evidently it's not an isolated incident.

The microphones in my headsets are dynamic (i/e they don't need phantom power. They work fine plugged directly into my old Windows laptop).

My MBP came with 10.5.5 installed, and all of the latest patches are now installed.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this yet?

I also have this problem. I usually use my bluetooth to talk to skype, but i just bought this voice recognition software and tried using the Line-In with a better mic...and nothing! I thought the mic was defected, so got a new one with the same result.

Reading this discussion tells me that I'm not the only one. I use Vmware and when I tested the internal microphone is very chopy and slow, not sure if you guys have the same experience using it with other OS.

Errr..this is frustrating.

I found one solution and apparently the Audio Line in port requires some sort of power it does not work from a passive direct analog input. I discover this by plugging an stereo phone line cable with both male ends from my ipod to the audio line in (external Microphone hole) and it finally detects sound. (one quick way to test it if the hardware itself is not the problem)

My solution was to buy an USB microphone headset rather than the old classic headset that comes with a mic and headset phone cable, it was like 30$ on ebay. It works now, both in my Leopard and VMware XP OS systems.

I have a 2 year old Mac Book Pro with 10.5.6. I have been using Line-in successfully for over a year, then it just stopped working last week and has not worked since. As I had a few other issues, I did the complete Erase hard drive and re-installed everything (store bought Leopard, then updates) - still no line in. The headset is fine as it works no problem on a Windows PC. The built in microphone also works fine.

I assume that it is a software problem after reading this and other forums but is there a solution that works!!! None that have been mentioned on this forum seem to work.

My workaround is to use a USB headset but that is not good enough as I also use line in from my dictaphone.

I have just had a long chat with Apple support in Australia where I live.

Apparently the Line-in is port is for high level inputs ie directly from an amplifier. It is not designed for headsets. I have a G5 and MacBook Pro both with the same problem.

I put a high level amplified signal into the Line-in port on my Macbook Pro and it worked no problems.

The answer to my problems is now solved by using a USB headset. You can buy USB sound cards for a few dollars on eBay but I am still waiting for one to arrive so I can go back to using my expensive Plantronics head set.

From my discussions with Apple support, they are going to be doing nothing as they do not see that there is a problem so we all have to get "work arounds" (ie USB head sets) to solve the problem as Apple will not be doing anything in the short term.
