error invalid number

I keep getting this, "Error invalid number. Please re-send using a valid 10 digit mobile number or valid short code," every time I try to send a test message to someone. Yes, I have put a 1 and area code in front of the number and still nothing. Anyone have this problem? Any solutions? Thanks for the help in advance.

You may wish to speak to AT&T Technical or AT&T Data Support not AT&T General Care.

If you are unable to get to one of these agents. Please contact Apple at 1-800-My-iPhone and inform the tech rep of your issue. At which point you may request a product specialist at Apple and the Product Specialist will be able to get ahold of an AT&T Data Support agent to assist with this issue.

At this time it is an issue with the Data package on the iPhone from AT&T not completely being installed correctly from the cellphone towers when iPhone was originally activated.

Hope this helps a little bit. Post back if you have anymore issues 🙂

So I did everything you advised and I was eventually on the phone with a tech guy, after about 2 hours, who was able to help/solve the problem. He first reset the network and had me text someone from my contact list, but instead of going to my contacts he had me dial the actual number w/area code and that did it. For some reason, even though the person I sent the text to on my contacts had the area code included in the number, the text would showed up as an error saying that I didn't have the area code.

Step 1-Hit the SMS icon
Step 2-Hit the icon on the top right (looks like a pencil inside a square)
Step 3-put in number with area code, then send text

Your correct this is not normal expected behavior. It is a work around. And usually only used if you do not know the person your texting or have yet to add them to your contact list. You should be able to choose someone in your contact list and send an SMS.

I would ensure your running Software update 1.1.2 for iPhone. As well as maybe Un-sync your contacts and Re-sync them. See if maybe it resolves any conflict issues. As a last resort restore the iPhone just incase it is our software acting up. That should resolve it if it is. Beyond that one of our Technical Support Reps should be able to reach AT&T Data Support for you and see if we can do anything else before we consider a "Possible" iPhone or SIM card replacement.

Let me know how it works out.

For what it's worth I just got off the phone with ATT support, and sending the message as it said to with the area code seems to have fixed my problem. I asked why only yesterday it would start requiring this, even for mobile numbers in my same area code, and he told me that some area were beginning to mandate the use of area codes for text messages, so I just have to add area codes to my local mobile contacts.

I'm having the same issue after I installed 1.1.3 and over the last two days I've spent over 4 hours on the phone with Apple and AT&T without them being able to fix it. We've done everything from switching it to airplane mode and back to a full restore on a new user account and the problem persists. I'm holding for second level of AT&T's tech support now but from the results so far, I doubt they'll be able to help. Thanks!

I am having the same problem since the update to 1.1.3. My wife, however, is not having the problem. This is very odd to me considering we both sync to the same computer. This is extremely aggravating as I can not simply reply to her text messages and have to manually input her number each time. This is ridiculous. I hope my failed texts are not counting in our 200 total per month.

Has anyone had any help yet that solves this issue?

Okay, so after getting the run around from both att and iphone, a product specialist was able to help. He did so many things that I cant even remember everything that he did on my phone. I do know the first step to fixing this problem. Go to general, then reset, then Erase All Content and Settings. Remember to back up all your things like contacts and pictures. After that's done put back all your things and it should work. If anyone still has a problem continue posting.

same thing happened to me after updating to 1.1.3 with only one of my contcts. Went to both Apple and AT&T nothing they suggested worked. Apple told me to do a restore, really didn't want to do that, so I tried clearing all the texts from only that conversation ....... It works fine now!

BTW Apple said they hadn't heard of this problem...... Seems to me there are quite a few people with the same problem!

I followed some of the advice in the this thread and was able to get it all working again. I first went to the settings menus and erased all the data on the phone then restored it from iTunes. This sis not work by itself. I then went to the SMS home page and deleted all of the text conversations. After I did this all has been working again.

Note: It was not enough to just clear the conversation I had to actually delete them.
