Classic slow - Trueblueenvironment?

Hi
I have Tiger 10.4.1 installed on my G4 Powermac. I use one CAD application in Classic. This worked fine in Panther. Since installing Tiger it has slowed right down and become jerky and unusable. I have scoured this forum for similar discussions. I have done an archive and install on Tiger and a restore OS9 from the Restore disc that came with the G4. No difference. I noted some comments about TrueBlueEnvironment and checked the Activity Monitor. Sure enough it is using anything between 85 - 100% of CPU! It says it has 45.93MB of real memory and a whopping 1.13GB yes GB of Virtual Memory. Is this the problem? If so what can I do about it.
Any suggestions welcome.

Hi
I'm having the exact same problem! I have tiger 10.4.1 installed on my G4 and I'm using Photoshop in Classic. Since I upgraded to Tiger, using photoshop has been a nightmare - its really slow and simply frrezes intermittantly for up to a minute or so. I too checked the activity monitor and saw that the Tru Blue environment is using about 1.1 gigs of virtual memory!! I've also tried repairing permissions and repairing the disk from the install disc. All to no avail! Before upgrading to Tiger I was using OS 10.1.5 and had no problems at all with using Photoshop in Classic. I know I could upgrade photoshop to the OSX version, but I don't have that kind of cash!
Any ideas out there?

I am having a problem similar to the first two posters (namely poor Classic performance and the Activity Monitor showing TruBlue gobbling up all the CPU, but only after the first Classic app is started). I've seen numerous threads describing things to try that could correct the problem, but can anyone actually confirm that something actually works? As suggested, I've done a clean install of OS9, updated Quicktime to 6.0.3, fixed permissions, fixed OS9 permissions, etc., yet nothing changes. With so many of us seeing the same symptoms, there must be some common root cause. Has anyone experienced the symptoms as described above and actually fixed their problem? Or, is there someone with a sound enough knowledge of TruBlue to have an explanation of what might cause it to behave this way when an app is started? Thanks in advance for any insight.

alright...i may have found an answer...i went to an apple store and they fixed my problem. once again, my problem was that i would start classic and it would get to the "Mac OS 9.2" startup screen and it would stop working...it would take up all of my processor power and about 1.15gb of virtual memory. what they did, was (if you use or have ever used DivX) go to the hard disk on desktop (usually named Macintosh HD) and go to the "library" folder. then go to the "application support" folder and move the "DivXNetwork" folder out of the "application support" folder. (dont delete because it might need it if you still use divx.) it should boot right up. try that. good luck

I don't know about Eric, but this solution does not help me. I have never used DivX and I do not have a problem starting up Classic. In fact it runs just fine (i.e. no hogging of resources) until I start up a Classic application (although I'm not sure if its any app or a specific set of apps...that's something I'll have to look into). Thanks for offering the suggestion though.

Thanks for messages. i don't have DivX installed on my G4.
I tried repairing permissions in OSX and rebooted into OS9.2 and repaired permissions. I rebuilt desktop in OSX preferences.
No effect. in fact it's worse than ever. TruBlue is showing 137%!!! of CPU in Activity Monitor and the CAD application will not work/save/draw anything.

Still looking for help here and it looks like I'm not the only one.

I've tried several of the suggestions here, but its not making a bit of difference. Applications in classic - especially Photoshop - are sluggish and it frequently hangs for about a minute or so in the middle doing something seemingly innocuous like zooming in on an image and then attempting to move around, or even using a paint brush, everything stops like its crashed, but a minute or so later things work again. I'm finding imaging is taking twice as long as before!
I'm not having any problems with classic actually starting up, its just the performance of the applications within it.
Help!

Yeah, once I run a Classic game (Prince of Persia 2), the trublueenvironment kicks up to 90% CPU usage. Before that, it's down to about 3%, but regardless, it takes up 1.3GIG of virtual memory, so something screwy is going on.

I did the repair permissions stuff for OS 9 in Disk Utility and rebuilt the classic desktop from the Classic in System Preferences, and even removed the 5.2.1 codec of DivX, but nothing has resolved the issue.

I have OS X 4.1 on a Powerbook G4. Before upgrading to Tiger, it was working fine.

I too have this problem on my G3 iBook. Had trouble getting Classic to work after upgrading to Tiger. Ran all the permission repairs, reupdated OS 10.4.1; reinstalled OS 9.2.2. Finally replaced 'Classic Startup' (System>Library>CoreServices by using the excellent shareware program Pacifist (<http://www.charlessoft.com/>).

Now, even after quitting Classic I found TruBlueEnvironment claiming over 80% of my available memory. I was able to force quit the process through Activity Monitor, but why was it still running?

I seem to have all the problems I see here, on this topic, with a few extras. Mostly to do with OS 9, it seems, since I installed OS 10.4.1 Classic hangs up starting and the whole computer freezes. (Just like the good old days!) I have to reboot. OS 10.4 apps like Safari freeze and will not Force Quit. (it Says it's quit in Force Quit, but the Safari emblem remains in the Dock as open.) Again, the entire computer is froze-up! I have to reboot. Often, the computer fails to shut down entirely, too. Everything clears from the screen but the screen saver. Again, there's nothing to do but hit the Power off button.

What I haven't seen in other messages, here, is that some of my Classic apps will not open. Script Editor opens instead. Or Applicator. The OS 9 apps are listed as apps in the Info, but they are treated as documents. To be opened with some other application. I can not change the INFO to open them with OS 9. Other OS 9 applications open fine. Just as they should.

I suspect that all this stuff has to do with Tiger and Classic being thoroughly Incompatible. Which is how it sounds in other messages, here. But, who knows? Does anyone have a solution? Apple? (I've tried the permissions, the rebuilt desk-top, the Quick-time suggestion in these messages etc. etc. Nothing helps, so far.)

Thanks for any suggestions of any kind.
