Bubbles under the glass???

I have an 4gb iPhone that I got at the launch of the phone that has bubbles that are appearing under the glass now.

I have 5 bubbles thus far and more as showing up as the days go on. I can't find any reference to these on apple's site but I am seeing quite a few people talk about it when searching google.

Is this something apple will take care of at the Apple Store and replace the phone?

This is not due to any abuse, it's just a fault of manufacturing or something.

What's the deal here?

The bubbles appeared on my 8GB iPhone too. It was promptly replaced, under warranty, at the Apple store.

The genius described the problem being "burst" pixels in the screen - he examined the screen with a scope like a Doctor would use to examine your ears.

I had 5 bubbles in my screen. One at first, then slowly over the last few months, they just started to appear. I took it into the Apple store and they replaced the phone. They said they had seem about 3 of them come back with bubbles in the display, but couldn't get an answer as to why. They thought that is was just a "first batch" issue.

So if you have this issue, Apple will replace your phone to resolve it...

So I stood in line and paid $600 for my first iPhone. I kept it in a hip case ALWAYS, and kept it out of the rain. After 6 weeks, I had about 14 bubbles under the screen. It got worse though. As the phone heated up (I'm assuming), the bubbles expanded putting pressure on the LCD creating a VERY noticeable pressure band down the screen top to bottom about a quarter way from the left edge. That happened for one week before the top 1/6th of the screen stopped responding to finger input and finally, the phone would just randomly lock. I took it to the local Apple Genius, demonstrated the problem, and was handed a refurb phone on the spot. This new phone has lasted 4 months before developing the problem with bubbles in more or less the same places as they appeared on my last iPhone. I've only got 4 bubbles now and the pressure has started. Me thinks a trip back to the Genius Bar is in order...

hi doofoo,
i had the same issue. waited in line for 17 hours to get an iphone and had 2 little tiny bubbles under the screen. after 8 months i decided i was sick of the bubbles... so i went to the apple store and no questions asked got it replaced. i couldn't get an explanation for the bubbles, but i got a brand new phone (straight from the packaging with 1.1.3 pre-installed).

It happened to me too! I just got back from the Apple Store in Towson. I had 5 bubbles... 3 in the top left, one in the top right, and one in the lower left. I had a 4 GB phone. One thing to be certain of: make sure they give you an updated phone or else you deal with more work at home. You have to update the phone, followed by restoring it, and then restoring it again otherwise. The phone they gave me came loaded with 1.1.1 and I already had 1.1.3.

Also, make sure you never had your phone exposed to even a drip of water. They used their pen light to check the water-dot inside the headphone jack!

Alright, I took it into the West 14th Apple store (which is so big, it isn't crowded) and I showed a "genius" the bubble. The guy just said "oh" and replaced the phone--no questions asked. He went to the back, brought back an iPhone in a small white box, replaced the SIM card, and sent me on my way after a signature.

ok I have had bubbles since about the 4th month I have owned the phone and I bought day one. I went to the Genius bar today and they gave a replacement phone. I said I had the bubbles problem. They asked if I had ever dropped the phone. They gave me a brand new phone and said they were working through the remaining stock since the phones were no longer being manufactured and they had no refurbished phones left. I started with one bubble and had three when they replaced the phone. After 356 days I have a NEW iPhone. Apple Service isn't always perfect but they really rock!

On a side note, after I said I had not dropped the phone he looked down the head phone jack with a small magnifying device similar to what the Dr uses to look in your ear. He also peered around the base of the phone specifically he stuck the device beside the inner charging/syncing waffer-thingy. Does anyone have any idea what he was looking at or for?

Your problem is rare, but not unheard of. What most likely happned was your iPhone might have had a fault when it was made. Their might have been a spot that air could get under the screen. It may be to small to see with the human eye, but most likely its their. Like another guy said, your still under the one year warranty, so try to take it in, and explain it to them. If they can not help you because your warranty does not cover it, you should invest in getting it fixed ASAP. A small problem can get bad FAST. So as long as you fix it soon, you should be good.

Quick update, I took my phone in today and got it replaced right away. The Geniuses said they had never seen the problem before, though I know one of them did because I had the problem before and had him send it out, which resulted in getting a replacement, but I digress. One of them thought the bubbles was due to heat, but I don't really think that I've had it in unusually hot environments. I was really pleased with the quick help of the Towson Apple Store Geniuses. Yay for no bubbles!

I also had a first batch iPhone, it was a present from a friend..

there were bubbles located in same location just as the 2 images quoted way above;

and one more formed on the right side..

Then there were 2 more forming on the left side lower, so I figured I had enough and went to the Apple Store.

Within 30 seconds of talking/describing it was replaced.

Yes, they will still replace it. I have had this problem for months, but I assume it was because I had dropped my phone a time or two. I had a barely noticeable dent, but the back was scuffed so badly that the metal was becoming shiny. There were countless scratches. Additionally, my screen had some discoloration in the area where there were two large bubbles very close together (I had 5 all together). Now I realize this discoloration was probably caused by pressure the bubbles were applying to the screen, as someone above described.

Even with all the scuffs my phone had, I took it into the store yesterday. The genius looked at it for about a minute (examing the water indicator as someone else described above) and then replaced it, no questions asked.

As for those who questioned receiving a refurbished unit, I would rather have a refurbished phone without bubbles and screen discolorations than keep my original one that did.
