iTunes 7.6 No Audio When Playing a Music Video or Movie

I just installed iTunes 7.6.0.29 (It was released today).

There is no audio when playing a music video or a movie that I've purchased. Movie trailers and music videos in the iTunes store have no audio either. Videos from iTunes University that I've downloaded (such as an MIT lecture) play fine w/ audio.

Music audio (such as tracks I've purchased or tracks on the iTunes store) play fine.

QuickTime videos, such as a QT video on my desktop play fine. Windows Media Player works fine too.

So, why don't music videos and movies play (w/audio) on iTunes 7.6??

Dell XPS, Windows XP

I too have experienced this problem and spent most of the afternoon trying to figure out why the movie I rented would freeze my system after a few seconds of playing as well as why my previous music videos had no sound.

Thanks to this thread I followed the recommendation of putting Quicktime back to 7.3 and at least my music videos now play correctly.

Good news is Apple Support refunded my rental purchase and provided me two free music downloads. Bad news is the kids are still upset that they couldn't watch UnderDog today as I promised.

Hopefully Apple will put out fix for this soon as I really like the idea of renting videos on-demand with the option to get HD when avaialable.

It's been two weeks since we first discovered this problem and have yet to hear from Apple.

I understand this problem doesn't effect all users and it does help that you can downgrade Quicktime to a previous version, but that really isn't a great solution. And I know its really, really difficult to write software that works on Windows. But I wish someone from Apple would pop on to the site and give us an update.

Hope this message bumps this thread to the top.

Went thru the downgrade of Quicktime and was able to get my previously purchased SG Atlantis videos working again. But still nada on the rentals 😟

Tried the infamous 'UnBox' route. rented a video, works well, video quality is good. So while I was at unBox, also pulled the latest SG Atlantis episode too. Surprise, the video quality is better than I'd seen in iTunes. Files are 800+MB where as the iTunes downloads are only 500+MB (ie more compressed).

Apple, you're already loosing market share in this space, not commenting on this issue is only going to cause further market losses.

Like the others posting here, I lost the ability to get audio on movie trailers and videos in iTunes after "upgrading" (and I use that term loosely) to version 7.6.

I am extremely disappointed that it has been 3 weeks since this issue was first posted and we have yet to see anything meaningful from Apple other than "we're looking into this" in an earlier post around Jan 16th.

Like others, I "fixed" this problem by rolling back QuickTime to version 7.3.1, but I'm not real thrilled about having to make the trade between a security vulnerability in my system and a functional version of iTunes.

Apple, please read and respond to this thread. If it will be a while before the issue is fixed...fine. But have the courtesy to let us know that.

Incidentally, the next time I hear someone gush about how much better Apple is than MS, or how much better the support is, or how much better the hardware is, I may just slug them...or at minimum I'll direct them to this forum where they can witness for themselves how "problem-free" Apple is and how gloriously responsive they are. I'll also remind them that with Apple products they will recieve almost weekly updates/upgrades to their software like iTunes and QuickTime and those updates will have almost no visible user enhancements and instead be mostly about locking down Digital Rights Management more tightly and fixing security vulnerabilities. And, I'll remind them if they don't upgrade, they can enjoy Apple nag-ware reminders and popups...or if they do upgrade the only visible difference between the new and previous versions will be the numbers shown in the "Help...About..." box. That and the likelihood that something broke by "upgrading." Oh, and I'll be sure to remind them that with Apple they can be the proud owners of the only consumer devices known to man that require return of the product to an authorized service center and parting with $50 of coin to change the battery. Finally, I'll demonstrate to them how iTunes represents such a wonderful one-way street, allowing you to move music and videos onto your iPod but not back to iTunes again. No, for that you must get yet ANOTHER piece of software, such as iPod copy, thanks to the unbelievable mess known as DRM.

Yes, it certainly is trouble-free owning/using Apple products.

I'm also disapppointed about this problem. Since installing the "upgrade" to 7.6, audio no longer works for videos I try to play on the PC I have connected to my plasma TV (Windows XP). Version 7.6 works fine on my Gateway notebook PC (Windows XP), so I've been able to play my purchased content with it but, after 3 weeks, I am beginning to wonder when Apple will have a new version available that will fix this problem.
