1602 and 1604 errors when updating to 1.1.3 firmware

So like many people today, I tried to update my Touch's firmware to 1.1.3. Using iTunes 7.6, I downloaded the file, but then when it goes to update, it gets stuck on the "Preparing iPod for update" step and then comes back telling me that the iPod could not be updated, giving either a 1602 or 1604 error. I can restore back to the 1.1.2 firmware with no problems, but after multiple attempts, multiple reboots, multiple reinstalls of iTunes, and multiple forced restores, I still can't update the firmware to 1.1.3, getting the same error each time. A quick Google search reveals that I'm not the only one having this problem, so I hope a fix is worked out quickly. I guess I shouldn't be in much of a hurry, seeing as there appear to be a slew of other problems with the new application pack anyway.

I don't want to call this question answered because the way I was forced to work around the problem is stupid and arbitrary, but I simply fired up a different computer, updated iTunes to 7.6, plugged in my iPod, and let it update the software. It went off without a hitch, which makes basically no sense at all. But, for what it's worth, it worked. Afterward I just had to plug my iPod back into my primary computer, fire up iTunes, and sync it to my library.

I also had the 1604 error when upgrading to 1.1.3 and all restore attempts would fail with the same error. I tried it several times and even deleted the update file from Documents and Settings. I'm using Windows XP Professional and iTunes is located on my SATA drive. The initial install and upgrade from 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 worked with no problems. I right clicked on the folder I installed iTunes in and selected properties. Then I selected Share this folder on a network and Allow Network users to change my files. The restore worked fine after that and I was on version 1.1.3 with all my previous contacts and bookmarks intact.

I had the 1602 error when upgarding to 1.1.3 and tried exactly what Nuby1Canuby suggested ("I right clicked on the folder I installed iTunes in and selected properties. Then I selected Share this folder on a network" w/o changing any permissions) and the issue was resolved. So I just wanted to confirm this is probably a good fix, and it is also very simple.

I've got the exact same problem.

Download and restore 1.1.2 (shift-click the restore button to select file) if you want a working iPod again.

As for upgrading to 1.1.3, I get the same errors as others are reporting. As someone else said, I'm also a software developer with some experience and this looks a lot like a problem with the client i.e. iTunes + updater.

What I find worrying is this obviously botched release has gone uncommented-upon by Apple. Perhaps if we all post to Slashdot/Reg etc we might suddenly see some action.

I had this problem on my Touch. My PC initially downloaded the update, which error'd upon install, and then my Touch wasnt even visible in iTunes etc and was in recovery mode.

I solved this by installing the latest iTunes on a different computer (my work PC). After install, connected the Touch which was immediately recognised as being in recovery mode and was restored successfully. It also then downloaded the 1.1.3 update and installed it wothout a problem. After this I returned it to my home PC, plugged it in (it worked fine and was recognised by my PC all ok) and then purchased the upgrade and it's been fine since.

Hope this helps.

Yup, seen that, read that. Doesn't work. Apple client software and/or update itself is flawed.

For the person asked about getting back to 1.1.2 -

0. Shutdown iTunes.

1. Put your iPod into restore mode by press & hold the "off/on" & "home" buttons until the thing switches off. Then press & release "off/on" whilst holding down "home" and it will come up with the "connect me up" screen.

2. Launch iTunes. It will stick a dialog up saying something like "I've detected an iPod in restore mode". Ok this dialog.

3. Hold down SHIFT and click RESTORE. A file selection dialog will appear.

4. Browse to the location of the 1.1.2 restore file and select it. If you don't have one, google for it. It's called something like iPod1,1 1.1.2<hex digits>_Restore.ipsw

5. Wait while it mucks about with your iPod. Eventually, it will come back to life.

Hope this helps.

I have been trying to update my software and have been getting the same error as everyone else. I went ahead and restored my itouch to the original settings and when I did that it automatically loaded the 1.1.3 update. Now I have to load all my music, movies and pictures again. It's a pain but I am just glad that it is fixed.
